I remember my grandfather liking this song. It was so perfect for Johnny Cash because he cultivated that spooky outlaw dressed in black persona from the very beginning of his career.
My Husband was a Professional Musician. He played with Jesse Smith, who wrote the Almond Joy jingle, and went on to Mayor Land-o-Lakes, Fla! They did this song , only they played their guitars behind their heads! It was an amazing site. I remember, there was a bass lick that my Hubby improvised on, at the end of the song, and he got into big trouble for it! That was back when people went out to listen to bands! Are there any places left with live music? I'm old, I don't go out!
If you like this kind of song, not just Johnny Cash, check out Marty Robbins Gunfighter Ballads album, there are a lot of cowboy type songs there. El Paso is probably the most famous but Big Iron & The Master’s Call are right up there. I know this comment is on a very old video, but if you see this definitely give him a listen! 👍👍😄
Why do one legend? There are several good tracks that Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, & Carl Perkins performed together - Paralyzed, Softly and Tenderly, I Shall Not Be Moved, Jesus Walked That Lonesome Valley, Just a Little Talk with Jesus, & Down By the Riverside.

Nobody does it better than JOHNNY CASH
Every one has their own hell. Cowboy's hell is chasing the Devil's herd and never rounding them up.

Stan Jones did the original in 1948 and a host of singers have covered it. I think the best is by Frankie Laine in 1963.
This song brings me memories when I was little.
I was in high school when he was singing "A Boy Named Sue." Check it out. (I'm 68 yo) Grandma Ellen, signing off. LEGEND? Stevie Nicks.
