Kristofferson is an underrated badass. Before he made it in music, he worked as a a janitor at a recording studio in Nashville on the weekends and was a commercial helicopter pilot during the week. At the studio he bumped into June Carter Cash and gave her a demo tape to give to Johnny, and she did, but Johnny just tossed it in a pile of demos people gave him without listening to it. After a few weeks of not hearing anything, Kris decided he’d get Cash’s attention and landed a helicopter in his front yard demanding to have his tape listened to. All four of the Highwaymen are legends, and you should definitely check out Waylon; a solid 90% of the songs he recorded are solid country gold and he basically created outlaw country.

He was the one who recorded using his band on his records, produced his records, had the first million country record, kicked a twenty year drug habit cold turkey and had the best rocking/country/soul voice, ever. He was a good songwriter and a great wit. His fourth wife, the beautiful singer, songwriter, Jessi Colter, was his true love. They were married 32 years until his death from diabetes on Feb.13, 2002. They have one son, singer Shooter Jennings. Waylon had four children by previous marriages and Jessi has one daughter by her first marriage to musician,Duane Eddy. He was a true original and did things his way! He and Willie Nelson had quite a few hits together. Johnny Cash and Waylon were close friends and roomed together in the ‘60s.

Waylon was the bass player for Buddy Hollys band. He gave his seat to the Big Bopper on the day "The Day the Music Died." February 3, 1959. That's part of Don McLean's American Pie! Another clue is the Marching Band is The Beatles including their song Sgt Peppers and the one you think belongs to Charles Manson. The Beatles could rock, huh! The fisted rage was directed at Mick Jagger and the Stones. Janis Joplin sang the Blues! Enough tips for a while. Some of us lived through the story of this song BP!
Waylon has changed to a Fender custom guitar now, he wrote tons of songs. He also played the music on Dukes of Hazzard's and narrated on all of the TV programs. Listen to his songs "I've Always Been Crazy" and "Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys". He sang with Willie Nelson and Hank Jr. before the Highwaymen were formed. He died in 2020 from diabetes. If you like his music, join the world, he has a long long list and they are all good!

Man this takes me back, even though I'm from AUS I grew up on Sunday arvo Elvis movies and country music. I've always interpreted this song to be about those with an adventurous spirit, and how it only those willing to step outside their comfort zone and take a risk that ever move humanity forward!

Massive love... this song is epic. Johnny Cash god love him, his vocals are so good. everyone else (Nelson, Waylon & Kristofferson) add to this song but Cash steals the show.

These four were founding members of a branch of country music known as 'Outlaw Country'. They bucked the system and the studio system to do things their own way. Hence the name 'The Highwaymen'.

Y’all got it right, and thank you for doing this. I got to see the first live performance by The Highwaymen at Willie Nelson’s 4th Of July Picnic in 1985. They each played a set during the day. I remember Kris Kristofferson was wearing a Rolling Stones T-shirt. Johnny Cash brought his wife June Carter Cash on to do a few songs. Willie Nelson stepped on to do a song or two with each of them, and then after dark they all came on together as The Highwaymen. I looked up during Jerry Jeff Walker’s set and Neil Young was playing with the band. Neil came back on to do a set. We managed to get backstage, or really side-stage, and drink a beer while they all walked by and looked at us, probably wondering how we got there, but they left us alone. It was an incredible day.

Back when we in high school my sister was really into her drama class. There was a movie being filmed in Austin (we lived about 30 miles from Austin) with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson (The Songwriter?) and my sister talked dad into taking her in so she could try to get a part as an extra. She didn't get a part, but dad did. Instead of cashing the check he got, he had it framed. (I think it was for like $35.00)

Kris Kristofferson is a Rhodes Scholar ... he was born in 1936. He played in a movie called "Convoy" that was released in 1978 along with Ali McGraw and Ernest Borgnine. That is my all-time favorite movie. This song debuted on Billboards Hot Country Hits Chart on 05/18/1985... peaking at #1 and stayed on the charts for 20 weeks and won the Grammy for "Country Song." Also, there was another LP titled "Highwaymen 2" on Columbia 45240. I was just reading a tidbit regarding Kris... "He got a job sweeping floors in Nashville studios. There he met Johnny Cash, who initially took some of his songs but ignored them. He was also working as a commercial helicopter pilot at the time. He got Cash's attention when he landed his helicopter in Cash's yard and gave him some more tapes. Cash then recorded Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down", which was voted the 1970 Song of the Year by the Country Music Association."

I was told a story by my grandmother that when her and my grandpa were young and still newlyweds a friend took them to panther hall in Ft Worth Tx to see some young county singers. They got to go back to this singer's hotel and have a mini jam session after the concert. Then she said ,like it was no big deal. It was Willie and Waylon. I loved hearing this story.

I got to see them 5 times live by the time I was 7. My earliest memory is being like 18 mos. old listening to them perform On The Road Again and Pancho and Lefty. Pretty Paper was a Christmas Album played during every present opening. I met Willie at his annual 4th of July Cookout in Luke bachelor as one my dad's friends was married to the mayor of the town at that time.
