    I like her deep voice on this track. Also Lorde's rejection of consumer culture and "bling" is very much like Cobain and Nirvana. She's not a punk, but she is counter culture like Kurt was, so its a great choice for the song. PJ Harvey could have done it very well also.

      I'll admit I was sceptical when I heard Lorde was doing this, but I have been swayed. She's done a really good job here. Shame it's not the whole song in this video, but I did enjoy it.

      Funny you should say that... I'm not really sure how many fans of "Royals" enjoy as some anti-consumerist mantra...they heard the words you mention in the song and it sounds just like the songs that celebrate these material objects

    I think having Lorde sing a Nirvana song was a good idea. Her alternative style and personal lyrics really remind me alot of what Nirvana was trying to do and there is a huge momentum with her music that is shaking the status quo.

    Actually, picking Lorde to sing this song goes way beyond how she chooses to produce her music. Before this, Krist tweeted 'Kurt was a feminist', and the reason why Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St Vincent AND Lorde were picked, is because they're powerful women. Plus, Lorde is a proud feminist and THAT is something Kurt would have admired.

    So many hateful comments on literally all the induction ceremony videos. Why can't people understand that these performances are meant to be a tribute and not a competition on how much you can imitate Kurt? It's so fucking annoying to hear everyone bitch and ruin an amazing moment. They're honoring Nirvana, what more do you want? Everyone's an elitist that can't stand to see someone other than Kurt sing for the band. Of course they won't "live up to him". They aren't the original. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

  • @Eljonno

    "Kurt would be proud." That his band performed with a top 40 generic pop singer at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
    Yeah I could imagine how excited he'd be.

      @Mrtigersanders 10 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Generic?-She is the anti-pop star-If you took the time to listen to her album she sounds unlike anyone in the top 40-She is about as far from "GENERIC" as you can get...

    • @Eljonno
      @Eljonno 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cooper paleman White girl vocals over electronica, that's what's all over the top 40 and it's been done to death. So yes she's a generic pop singer.
      Fishbag
      I would hardly call Kurt's vocals "generic." And we all know that the pop charts of today contain 100% garbage, as opposed to the 90% garbage during the 90s.

      @Mrtigersanders 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I meant the top 40 now…I don't know why people get so but-hurt over some great female artists who got invited to sing nirvana songs as a tribute to nirvana…It's not like they are stealing nirvanas music & calling it their own..

    I don't get what's your problem, everyone. She sang it well (ofc not as good as Kurt, cuz noone can do that). And for the "She's a mainstream pop singer" argument- WHY THE FUCK DO YOU EVEN CARE? Kurt cared about the music, not who performed. If it's good, it's good, that's it!

      Yes. If you didn't notice check out the acceptance speech, Dave talks about himself, before Nirvana, more about himself, about the rock scene in Washington D.C. not Washington state, more about himself, himself, himself and himself, it's as if he's accepting the rock and roll hall of fame award for his solo career, didn't thank or mention Kurt once. Then Krist goes up and humbly mentions Washinton state scene, Kurt wishes Kurt was there, thanks Sub Pop and especially the fans of Nirvana. Who is more the rock star? KRIST ALL THE WAY. I can see Kurt's ghost rolling his ghost eyes ghost face palming while Dave is talking and I can see Kurt's ghost in agreement with what Krist is saying so much so that it'd be close to his own words. The End.

      One of the things I learned from being a musician is that the business side of promotion is very strong. If you dont promote, you dont eat and your art goes unheard. Im not an inside guy, but I can think of two reasons why they chose who they did. One- The boys genuinely like them and asked the singers to come jam. Two- Managers are in the background pulling strings and hooking up cross promotion. Either way, Lorde sells more records and Nirvana sells more records (also, they all appear to be enjoying themselves while they do it).
      P.S. All due respect to Cornell (love him), Vedder, and Stipe; but I really think that slapping together a jamboree of random singers from the era just because they knew Kurt isnt as interesting. The one exception being the J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr., he nailed it. Joan Jett (she is awesome) didnt really do it for me imho. No matter who you get, Its impossible to replace Cobain. I remember the Doors did a jam with the singer of the Cult and I hated it.

    To all the people who are getting butt hurt for Lorde performing with Nirvana, ask yourselves this: Which is worse? Lorde performing with Nirvana on Nirvana tunes, or Nirvana allowing Lorde to perform with them?
    Come on, people. This is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Award shows like this are like the Grammy's. Do you really think any of this is catered to music fans and musicians?
    Anyway, I thought Lorde did a great job.

    Hey I have an Idea! Maybe if you actually, I don't know LISTENED to Lorde's music and watched some of her interviews, you would have realized she would get along very well with Kurt. Just because she is 17 doesn't mean she is a pop singer. If Dave or Krist would of never let her do this if that was the case.

    • @LRHaslam
      @LRHaslam 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      "just because she's 17, doesn't mean she is a pop singer?" since when did age have anything to do with the genre of music that person is making? She is most definitely part of pop culture, and her music is pop. I don't think she did a very good job with this, but that's just my opinion anyway.. I just don't really like her voice in general actually

    • @vivalakassi
      @vivalakassi 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No she isn't a pop singer. Her songs may be on pop radio but her music itself isn't pop. But yeah that's the point I was trying to make anyways. And It's ok for you to think that, I just thought people were jumping to conclusions with her, that's all.

      Pure Heroin has sold over a million copies in the United States and Royals has gone to sell over six million. Now, you probably clump pop-stars into one category: boy/girl bands. What you fail to understand is that 'pop' is short for 'popular'. Lorde is the definition of popular. She's always on the radio and I'm sure she has music videos all over MTV. She's a pop-star. Get over it.

    Kurt would have LOVED this concept... he was all for equality Lorde represents an intelligent, individual thinking, unlikely mainstream success... which is kinda what kurt represented himself. Genius call from Dave, Pat and Kris. People who say kurt would have hated it are probably hipster trolls who don't really understand what Nirvana were about

    Some of you need to read some of the news articles about the choices of singers for the Nirvana songs. Here's an excerpt from one talking about the choice of Lorde for one of the singers:
    " For their final two songs, Nirvana tapped two younger performers, also both female, which spoke for Cobain's strong belief in feminism and equality. Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, performed "Lithium." The final vocalist was none other than Lorde, who sang "All Apologies" with a passion and vulnerability unanticipated from someone so young whose claim to fame is the pop hit "Royals." On that song, Jett and Germs/Nirvana/Foo Fighters member Pat Smear both played acoustic guitar, Novoselic manipulated and accordion, and Gordon filled in on bass." -Nirvana Steals the Show at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Celebration

    "Lorde lacks the soul" do any of you even know what that means? I think it's a great tribute, and I feel the surviving members of Nirvana chose her to play with them for a reason, and I feel since they are some of the best musicians alive today, there was a good reason for it. I don't understand the anger, it's an awesome cover, and she blends well with this style.

      I couldn't agree more chellywuzhere636. I'm a huge Nirvana fan and love this. I'm pretty sure Kurt would want NOTHING to do with anyone who's against this or the "elitists". You're right, it's a tribute and a well done one at that. Kurt in his time represented a whole generation of youth. He unwittingly became the spokesman of a generation and it's fitting that a new and upcoming youth, one who bucks tradition is performing for their induction.
      My 1st Nirvana album was a 5" inch single Sliver/Dive way before Nevermind ever came out. I then went and found Bleach and the rest was history :D

      Jamie Pinson I agree with you but Lorde was signed at 13 years old... not exactly an easy feat. She is a prodigy, and so was Kurt. Same with St. Vincent. Kim Gordon and Joan Jett have huge history with Nirvana so I am happy they chose them, but I am also happy they chose two women to represent the future generations of Nirvana and Rock N Roll fans

  • @colubrinedeucecreative

    I was there too! I thought that the other women did a amazing job, but they aren't getting the hype that Lorde is getting. I am definitely curious of St.Vincent, and thought it was cool that they used her for the performance; she had a Kurt like presence and Kim Gordon rocked it too!! Joan Jett is just a presence in her own right too, so I was excite to see her open the set up, but still ending with Lorde just left me unsatisfied. I guess because I just don't get her appeal and the Taylor Swift bff thing, so it wasn't my highlight of the evening. They kept the speech short (lol hint hint) and definitely jammed it out together, so that was great to see them back together again.

    All the people talking about mainstream is crazy. Grunge music became popular because of Nirvana and Pearl Jam becoming super popular in 91-92 and selling a ton of records. Nevermind was #1. In Utero was #1. They even had 2 #1 live albums, Unplugged and Muddy Banks. Go find someone over the age of 10 who doesn't know Nirvana. Do it. I dare you.

Miley is more talked about because of what she does instead of the music her production team makes for her. I dont listen to TOP 40 shit like you do. ***** Dave Grohl sold out a long time ago with the Foo Fighters and the people he has chosen to work with. Chris hasnt done anything so its hard to count him other than he decided to let these people play with them and destroy the music that they made. Courtney Love would have been a better choice for vocals than Lorde and Courtney is a complete twat.
