- Also feat. St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, and Joan Jett. Shot at Brooklyn's Barclays Center 4/10/14. Watch the night's other performances here: www.stereogum.c...
I like her deep voice on this track. Also Lorde's rejection of consumer culture and "bling" is very much like Cobain and Nirvana. She's not a punk, but she is counter culture like Kurt was, so its a great choice for the song. PJ Harvey could have done it very well also.
Thank you for being one of the few sensible people commenting on here.
I'll admit I was sceptical when I heard Lorde was doing this, but I have been swayed. She's done a really good job here. Shame it's not the whole song in this video, but I did enjoy it.
PJ Harvey would have done an incredible job
The labels painted that persona for her.
Funny you should say that... I'm not really sure how many fans of "Royals" enjoy as some anti-consumerist mantra...they heard the words you mention in the song and it sounds just like the songs that celebrate these material objects
I hadn't heard anything I liked from Lorde coming into this, but I listened to it with an open mind. Aaaand she blew it.
I think having Lorde sing a Nirvana song was a good idea. Her alternative style and personal lyrics really remind me alot of what Nirvana was trying to do and there is a huge momentum with her music that is shaking the status quo.
Holy fuck I love all the completely outrageous arguments. Just respect the tribute. Fuck.
Actually, picking Lorde to sing this song goes way beyond how she chooses to produce her music. Before this, Krist tweeted 'Kurt was a feminist', and the reason why Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St Vincent AND Lorde were picked, is because they're powerful women. Plus, Lorde is a proud feminist and THAT is something Kurt would have admired.
Feminism is a bullshit ideology
That's your opinion. I was just commenting on picking Lorde to sing this song
Fokker TISM Kurt Cobain was a feminist :D So SUCK IT
Dylan Hallman 4000 thousand years and counting, i wish they'ed get their shit together and "transcend" already. so i can start disliking lorde because she is crap and not an oppressed girl mess.
Dylan Hallman it is a really simple idea the most amazing and life changing ones always are. calling me naive exposes your own cynicism and close mindedness, congrats you fit in the box that is named "part of the problem" i hope you can one day move past it.
So many hateful comments on literally all the induction ceremony videos. Why can't people understand that these performances are meant to be a tribute and not a competition on how much you can imitate Kurt? It's so fucking annoying to hear everyone bitch and ruin an amazing moment. They're honoring Nirvana, what more do you want? Everyone's an elitist that can't stand to see someone other than Kurt sing for the band. Of course they won't "live up to him". They aren't the original. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
"Kurt would be proud." That his band performed with a top 40 generic pop singer at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Yeah I could imagine how excited he'd be.
Generic?-She is the anti-pop star-If you took the time to listen to her album she sounds unlike anyone in the top 40-She is about as far from "GENERIC" as you can get...
cooper paleman White girl vocals over electronica, that's what's all over the top 40 and it's been done to death. So yes she's a generic pop singer.
Fishbag
I would hardly call Kurt's vocals "generic." And we all know that the pop charts of today contain 100% garbage, as opposed to the 90% garbage during the 90s.
I meant the top 40 now…I don't know why people get so but-hurt over some great female artists who got invited to sing nirvana songs as a tribute to nirvana…It's not like they are stealing nirvanas music & calling it their own..
i don't understand why theres so much hate for Lorde. and Krist covered Royals on accordion a few months before the RRHOF. It was Krist's idea. take it up with him
Jon if today's music is 100% garbage, then why are you even here watching this? Music evolved mate... it's not 1991 anymore
She gave it her all, trying to do a tribute to someone she admired. Works for me.
I actually really like this. I'm surprised honestly. I mean I love Lorde but I wasn't happy about her covering a Nirvana song. But I think this is great
I don't get what's your problem, everyone. She sang it well (ofc not as good as Kurt, cuz noone can do that). And for the "She's a mainstream pop singer" argument- WHY THE FUCK DO YOU EVEN CARE? Kurt cared about the music, not who performed. If it's good, it's good, that's it!
I'm not a Lorde fan by any means, but the shit-talking is getting old.
I loved it! A great tribute! Thanks Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
This is incredibly epic... To hear these guys play again in company of all the girls... It's impossible not to shed a tear or a ton of tears. Listening the music from your teenage years and going thru all the memories these song imply... Man! I wish Kurt was alive and performing there, but I know he would be kinda uncoformtable with all the hype and stuff. Rest in peace mr. Cobain.
I never thought nirvana and lorde will come together I love this
I wonder if Krist Novoselic looks behind him and is like HOLY CHIT THAT'S THE GUY FROM THE FOO FIGHTERS
lame, the biggest rock star on that stage is Krist, just because he doesn't have a trendy poppy rock band doesn't make him any less rock
No.
Yes. If you didn't notice check out the acceptance speech, Dave talks about himself, before Nirvana, more about himself, about the rock scene in Washington D.C. not Washington state, more about himself, himself, himself and himself, it's as if he's accepting the rock and roll hall of fame award for his solo career, didn't thank or mention Kurt once. Then Krist goes up and humbly mentions Washinton state scene, Kurt wishes Kurt was there, thanks Sub Pop and especially the fans of Nirvana. Who is more the rock star? KRIST ALL THE WAY. I can see Kurt's ghost rolling his ghost eyes ghost face palming while Dave is talking and I can see Kurt's ghost in agreement with what Krist is saying so much so that it'd be close to his own words. The End.
O&A?
Saviour Scar yep.... I thought it was so good it had to be spread
Kurt would laugh his ass off. I am offended and amused, hell, Kurt would probably puke.
This sounded absolutely brilliant, good to include Lorde for the higher vocals and a brilliant performance
Instead of bitching about Lorde doing the vocals, how about instead we be grateful that the greatest band of all time is finally getting inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame.
You guys is so full of shit with that "mainstream" thing . So What if Lorde isn't Rock or is a woman , she is so right for it , her talent , charisma and character is perfect to do a Nirvana song.
She didn't do a good job... Joan Jett and Annie Clark, they kicked butt. Lorde gave a very bad performance. It happens to the best of them.
ThoBrian Cennetig i think she did a pretty good job , she isn't the best singer in the world but she knows how to pass the "feeling" of the song .. she is more of a performer than a singer
Felipe M M She's more of a writer/composer than anything else.
Clearly not a Nirvana fan.
How a culture comes again
It was all here yesterday
And you swear it's not a trend
Doesn't matter anyways
They're only here to talk to friends
Nothing new is everyday
You could shit upon the stage they'll be fans
They'll be fans
They'll be fans
They'll be fans
Nirvana Forever :)
Rather hear Dave sing this, or maybe even Taylor (Hawkins)
Shawn Crowe I agree. Other singers from the era would have been a nice mix, but apparently this induction is all about "bridging the generation gap".
zombiecrush
One of the things I learned from being a musician is that the business side of promotion is very strong. If you dont promote, you dont eat and your art goes unheard. Im not an inside guy, but I can think of two reasons why they chose who they did. One- The boys genuinely like them and asked the singers to come jam. Two- Managers are in the background pulling strings and hooking up cross promotion. Either way, Lorde sells more records and Nirvana sells more records (also, they all appear to be enjoying themselves while they do it).
P.S. All due respect to Cornell (love him), Vedder, and Stipe; but I really think that slapping together a jamboree of random singers from the era just because they knew Kurt isnt as interesting. The one exception being the J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr., he nailed it. Joan Jett (she is awesome) didnt really do it for me imho. No matter who you get, Its impossible to replace Cobain. I remember the Doors did a jam with the singer of the Cult and I hated it.
To all the people who are getting butt hurt for Lorde performing with Nirvana, ask yourselves this: Which is worse? Lorde performing with Nirvana on Nirvana tunes, or Nirvana allowing Lorde to perform with them?
Come on, people. This is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Award shows like this are like the Grammy's. Do you really think any of this is catered to music fans and musicians?
Anyway, I thought Lorde did a great job.
they picked her because Krist likes Lorde's music. She did a great job no matter what anyone else says.
Krist kind of made a bad choice here... like the ones he made with Sweet 75 & Eyes Adrift....bad bad music, so yeah.. Love him though.
this was so awesome last night
buena actuación de lorde por que según yo es toda la esencia de kurt y si ella esta cantando es por que dave ,krist y pat asi lo quisieron por que ellos saben que es digna de ocupar el lugar de kurt
I'm going to blame the _horrible_ singing on the seizure she was obviously having on stage
I'm going to blame your bad hearing on not de-waxing your ears & your bad attitude on being a crack-head...
And I'm going to blame your _lame_ insults on your stupidity.
yea Rene, you're such an expert with all your record deals. when are you getting inducted? dumb*ss
If giving your opinion makes you an 'expert', then we must _all_ be experts, huh? Idiots...
Rene Bernardino let me just italicize all my words to make myself seem superior to others.
I don't know why all the compliments, I didn't think she sounded good at all. They needed a male singer....one that could belt it out like Kurt did.
Or just have Joan do the whole show! ♥Joan Jett♥
Kurt is rolling over...
Hey I have an Idea! Maybe if you actually, I don't know LISTENED to Lorde's music and watched some of her interviews, you would have realized she would get along very well with Kurt. Just because she is 17 doesn't mean she is a pop singer. If Dave or Krist would of never let her do this if that was the case.
"just because she's 17, doesn't mean she is a pop singer?" since when did age have anything to do with the genre of music that person is making? She is most definitely part of pop culture, and her music is pop. I don't think she did a very good job with this, but that's just my opinion anyway.. I just don't really like her voice in general actually
No she isn't a pop singer. Her songs may be on pop radio but her music itself isn't pop. But yeah that's the point I was trying to make anyways. And It's ok for you to think that, I just thought people were jumping to conclusions with her, that's all.
I totally agree. The bands are more similar to what they have done to music then people think. Yes I consider Lorde alternative music and not pop.
Pure Heroin has sold over a million copies in the United States and Royals has gone to sell over six million. Now, you probably clump pop-stars into one category: boy/girl bands. What you fail to understand is that 'pop' is short for 'popular'. Lorde is the definition of popular. She's always on the radio and I'm sure she has music videos all over MTV. She's a pop-star. Get over it.
Was Nirvana considered pop in the early 90s because they were popular?
Hauntingly beautiful.
Its good seeing dave and krist up there should've had the kobain hologram haha
That was really good!, this is my favourite Nirvana song, and I think her voice worked well. That being said, would it have killed you to keep recording for another 30 seconds?
Why are people hating? She did a great job.
Was Lorde a perfect fit for this? Probably not. But to the people calling her a bitch etc, remember: "If you're a sexist, racist, homophobe, or basically an arsehole, don't buy this CD. I don't care if you like me, I hate you." Kurt Cobain
Could not agree more.
I'd never call her a bitch or anything of the like/ She's a respectable artist, but this truly isn't her style.
Not to bad. I LOVE hearing Krist, Dave, and Pat do these songs again!
pat still has the guitar he used in their mtv unplugged show. cool
This almost made me cry, why did you have to leave us Kurt ;_;
How unfortunate that the surviving members of Nirvana were FORCED to play this song with Lorde. I wonder how many guns were pointed at their heads before they bowed to the pop machine's demands. Surely they would never willingly consider Lorde to be a decent, respectable musician and THEMSELVES ASK HER to perform with them. That would imply Dave Grohl has no free will or personal taste in music and musicians.
They came up with the concept, it fits kurts equality ideology
WTF is lorde doing singing a nirvana song....that is so un nirvana...Kurt Cobain would be turning in his grave......she's fucking mainstream cooperate bait.....I fucking llove dave grohl .....big time drop of the ball dave....unless you were trying to hurt Courtney, then all is forgiven.
You might not know that Nirvana from 1992 to 1994 was probably the most popular band of the time, which from what I understand, qualifies as mainstream.
ted that just shows that you know shit about music......nirvana turned the music world upside down back in 92.......mainstream has always been referred to as bubblegum pop. rap etc.
People who obsess over what's mainstream and what's not and don't just listen to music for what it is are pathetic.
and ted I can tell by your comment, your one of these snobby people who loves to get technical with people.....you knew exactly what I meant by mainstream.
paranormalfrank Nevermind sold more than any rap album has ever done, therefore it's extremely mainstream. Also Lorde won a grammy for best song, which was part of her debut album released when she was 16, give her some fucking credit. When you were 16 did you write a song which was both the most critically acclaimed and popular song in the USA?
"I don't like her as a person."
Wtf else is she supposed to be?
I personally like her as a dragon.
ahahahahahahaha You win the comments battle
Not dragon but alien !
whether you think she should have sung this song or not doesn't matter, she did it. whether you think she was the wrong person to be chosen doesn't matter, she was chosen. If your a bummed out nirvana fan get over it, you were not personal friends with him, I myself nor you have the right to say what he would have thought these days of her being chosen to sing this song. it's just sad these days, the things that people choose to complain about honestly, it was a tribute.
Thank you for the weather.
Nirvana! Nirvana! Nirvana! Nirvana!Nirvana! Nirvana! Nirvana!
I love it just as it is: perfect.
This is great and I think Kurt would have adored her! :) Huge fan of both.
For only being a 17 year old, I think she is doing really well for herself. She has done NOTHING wrong as well, why all the hate? She is being herself instead of being involved in the bullshit other teenage stars do. Also about her movements, who are all you people to judge? She is expressing herself, and if any of you know anything about music, it is expression at its core.
Cheers.
Never thought of her doing the song but her voice is quite unique! very nice works well!
Lorde has no business performing this song with them.
Well Dave and Krist asked her to so i beg to differ.
chris and pat should have switched spots on the stage. they played on opposite sides. also, very nice to see pat use the acoustic from unplugged. fucking NIRVANA!
Krist actually really likes Lorde. And Kurt probably would too. You guys are way too quick to judge while most of you would probably shit your pants standing 2 feet away from Dave and Krist
listen lorde is so far way from nirvana....it's not funny.....dave just did a great documentary called sound city and part of this doc he slammed musicians using computers to produce and fix their music.....someone like lorde is a product of computer aged music.....she is simply not rock.....what happened at that RNR hall of fame was a cooperate move something kurt cobain would of hated.
paranormalfrank I don't think that you understood the meaning of that movie. He wasn't slamming electronic music, he was slamming the fact that a lot of people take advantage of it to make lazy music. Trent Reznor was featured in the movie because he makes incredible music with computers.
paranormalfrank Well Dave shouldnt be talking about computerized music when he quadruple dubbed over his own voice on Foo Fighter's first album using computers in a studio
paranormalfrank Funny how you think you know someone so well that died 20 years ago and never met. It's like you have a crystal ball that tells you what the whole band is thinking at any given moment.
I did meet Kurt Cobain before he was famous....I worked with his then girlfriend.......she is a sweetheart.....I never understood the Courtney Love move....well I do......he wanted a shadow of himself and Courtney was kind of like Kurt in many ways ...except Kurt didn't care about money.
Kurt would have LOVED this concept... he was all for equality Lorde represents an intelligent, individual thinking, unlikely mainstream success... which is kinda what kurt represented himself. Genius call from Dave, Pat and Kris. People who say kurt would have hated it are probably hipster trolls who don't really understand what Nirvana were about
FFS You cannot judge the quality of Lorde's or anyone else's performance from a handheld video taken by an audience member.
if anything the handheld cam helped to cancel out some of lordes jerky movements, hehehe.
hell yea krist shreddin that accordion
Some of you need to read some of the news articles about the choices of singers for the Nirvana songs. Here's an excerpt from one talking about the choice of Lorde for one of the singers:
" For their final two songs, Nirvana tapped two younger performers, also both female, which spoke for Cobain's strong belief in feminism and equality. Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, performed "Lithium." The final vocalist was none other than Lorde, who sang "All Apologies" with a passion and vulnerability unanticipated from someone so young whose claim to fame is the pop hit "Royals." On that song, Jett and Germs/Nirvana/Foo Fighters member Pat Smear both played acoustic guitar, Novoselic manipulated and accordion, and Gordon filled in on bass." -Nirvana Steals the Show at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Celebration
By Jon Wiederhorn
Anyone being rude to Lorde obviously has never seen a real Nirvana performance.
How would you know Kurt Cobain died before you were born.
^Ahhh, it's Kinsey lol Never found someone I knew on a youtube comment hahaha
Dude, I miss you :'c
JOSH! I MISS YOU TOO.
Michael Buhagiar TH-cam much?
uhm and neither have you lil baby
Krist and Lorde, two Croatians right there on stage. Fucking awesome for us Croatians.
To the person who asked if she was alive when NIRVANA was around,. No she was born nov of 1996
Pat has the same guitar he used in Unplugged?
for all of you hating on her. (she did a grand job IMHO)
krists and daves words-
pitchfork.com/news/54808-dave-grohl-and-krist-novoselic-talk-nirvana-reunion-potential-future/
I think she did a great job with it. She didn't try to copy cobain's style. I think she really made it her own
Love ya Dave
I thought Lorde was good until I heard her sing live... Amazing what computers can do these days!
i like how everyone here is dissing lorde just because she's popular, she has a good, unique voice... that being said, she did not do justice to this song, and frankly, i don't think there are many singers that can.
I mean They really did pick a good person. Really wow.
Lorde is kick-ass.
um, wow.. ok. I didn't think people disliked Lorde, everyone talks about how ''unique'' she is, well, I was up for a surprise...
It was good seeing Dave Grohl back on the drums, the only problem with this performance was Lorde's mediocre voice.
Lorde should be cast in the Lead Roll of the next Evil Dead Movie.
Should have gotten a toaster instead of lorde
SHE FRICKING RUINED IT.
Kurt is rolling in his grave !
Whose the pansy that booked this broad? she completely butchered a classic!
yeah she did but who gives a crud, Kurt's ghost watched the cruddy performance and laughed to himself
that would be dave grohl.
lmao
Dave is thinkin he can hit the drums as hard as he wants now that Kurt isn't there to tell him to 'play quieter' on the quiet songs.
when asked in an interview Kurt says that it was how hard he hit the drums that first impressed him
Where's Krist's epic purple pants? :(
Never thought I'd be comparing Nirvana fans to Belibers...But here we are. Angry Nirvana fans getting so butthurt.
As much as I like LORDE.. and do like the performance.. I think she hasn't paid her dues to be up there on that stage . . .Kim Gordon and St.Vincent/Annie Clark have.... and Joan Jett of course, she's a legend!
I mentioned this in the other video but she sound great in a punk girl band or something.
So Kurt's backing band let a fad sing at their introduction. Oh well, ten years from now people aren't going to have any idea who this girl is.
coo, that's what they said about Nirvana in 1991 "no one's gonna remember them"
Only girl I'd enjoy seeing sing with Nirvana is Francis Bean.
looking at the band of misfits on stage that are at the rock and roll hall of fame must make Kurt proud wherever he is right now lol
in the midst of so much commercial bullshit - this makes sense for his tribute
She should have been doing Lithium.
She has just taken the soul out of this amazing song. Not that i dont get that kurt and LORDE share some of the same views but shes covering a song that has massive hints of deppretion and even his suicidal thoughts.
good voices.....
Perfeeeect 3
u must be def, gay or never heard of Nirvana... or quite possibly all 3.
Darren Strongman
You must never have heard that Kurt really hated homophobic people.. Which your comment kind of makes you sound like.
Do yourself a favor and type in "Nirvana MTV Unplugged All Apologies"
I think she did a pretty good job. But I also feel that she shouldn't be the one to sing for the hall of fame induction, she's only 17 and started singing professionally only a year ago. Maybe they can get Chris Cornell or William DuVall?
"Lorde lacks the soul" do any of you even know what that means? I think it's a great tribute, and I feel the surviving members of Nirvana chose her to play with them for a reason, and I feel since they are some of the best musicians alive today, there was a good reason for it. I don't understand the anger, it's an awesome cover, and she blends well with this style.
its not being a woman, its about giving justice to the song,, I hope they get kid rock who can give justice and bring the house down
I actually liked this. Lorde did a good job.
Dear Lorde,
Flight of the Conchords are also from New Zealand, but they don't sound like they have marbles in their mouths.
I aint Lorde fan, but I appreciate her for this cover. Hey, Dave Grohl and Kirk themselves approved her, so why can't you?
Lorde?
Don't get me wrong, I think she's a great singer, and she pulled it off.
But why Lorde?
I couldn't agree more chellywuzhere636. I'm a huge Nirvana fan and love this. I'm pretty sure Kurt would want NOTHING to do with anyone who's against this or the "elitists". You're right, it's a tribute and a well done one at that. Kurt in his time represented a whole generation of youth. He unwittingly became the spokesman of a generation and it's fitting that a new and upcoming youth, one who bucks tradition is performing for their induction.
My 1st Nirvana album was a 5" inch single Sliver/Dive way before Nevermind ever came out. I then went and found Bleach and the rest was history :D
Jamie Pinson I agree with you but Lorde was signed at 13 years old... not exactly an easy feat. She is a prodigy, and so was Kurt. Same with St. Vincent. Kim Gordon and Joan Jett have huge history with Nirvana so I am happy they chose them, but I am also happy they chose two women to represent the future generations of Nirvana and Rock N Roll fans
I like the bridging of the generation gap.
It is genius, and a wonderful tribute.
I was there too! I thought that the other women did a amazing job, but they aren't getting the hype that Lorde is getting. I am definitely curious of St.Vincent, and thought it was cool that they used her for the performance; she had a Kurt like presence and Kim Gordon rocked it too!! Joan Jett is just a presence in her own right too, so I was excite to see her open the set up, but still ending with Lorde just left me unsatisfied. I guess because I just don't get her appeal and the Taylor Swift bff thing, so it wasn't my highlight of the evening. They kept the speech short (lol hint hint) and definitely jammed it out together, so that was great to see them back together again.
Is that Pat's exact same guitar from the MTV Unplugged gig in 1993?
Who's Lorde? Is that the old lady singing? Why is she there? lol
I fucking wish PJ Harvey got to cover a Nirvana song that would have been soooo coooool
memories of avril lavgine performing fuel in front of metallica and seeing metallica's reaction then... i can imagine kurt cobain doing the same..
All the people talking about mainstream is crazy. Grunge music became popular because of Nirvana and Pearl Jam becoming super popular in 91-92 and selling a ton of records. Nevermind was #1. In Utero was #1. They even had 2 #1 live albums, Unplugged and Muddy Banks. Go find someone over the age of 10 who doesn't know Nirvana. Do it. I dare you.
Lorde is so freakin god awful at everything she does... I dont see what the hype is about. She doesnt have a good voice. Plus what is up with that middle aged womans pant suit she is wearing?
***** Wrong.. I wouldnt want to see her naked... Miley is a talentless piece of fluff. People who get naked are trying to distract you from how bad their music is. Miley is more talked about because of what she does instead of the music her production team makes for her. I dont listen to TOP 40 shit like you do. I cant help you have bad taste in music and like untalented people.
***** I have forgotten about more stuff when it comes to music than you will ever know. I listen to so many different things, I cant name them all.
Female singers that are better than Lorde... Siouxsie Sioux, Toni Haliday from Curve, Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins, Lucia from KMFDM and the list goes on and on
***** Dave Grohl sold out a long time ago with the Foo Fighters and the people he has chosen to work with. Chris hasnt done anything so its hard to count him other than he decided to let these people play with them and destroy the music that they made. Courtney Love would have been a better choice for vocals than Lorde and Courtney is a complete twat.
Is that St. Vincent in the back playing guitar?
