- Noam Chomsky explains "the Propaganda Model", the central theme of his book, co-authored with Edward Herman, MANUFACTURING CONSENT: THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE MASS MEDIA. Noam Chomsky spoke at the Wisconsin Union Theater on the Madison campus of the University of Wisconsin on the evening of March 15, 1989. The lecture was sponsored by the Wisconsin Union Directorate's Distinguished Lecture Series for the 1988-89 academic year.

I discovered Rocker while reading a biography about Chomsky. Rocker wrote an incredible book about the Spanish Civil War with which Chomsky was enamored as a youngster.

wow i didn't even know i was subscribed to this channel. great upload though, i'll always give chomsky a listen.
its interesting that the position of the elite is that the average person has no ability to assess their own interests. And yet, a large swath of the population seems extremely easy to be convinced of things that clearly are against their interest (case and point, republican voters and liberalizing the economy). its sort of hard to argue for democracy when you observe how easily manipulated people are and how terrible they seem to be in actually recognizing their own interests. US libertarians are another great example. a group thats been convinced that advocating of total private tyranny is the path to ultimate freedom. it is Orwellian in that what they advocate for is the extreme opposite of what they say they want. perhaps the elites are right, or are these people just the result of decades of indoctrination and sophisticated propaganda? if so, why are people like myself and others seemingly immune to this, or am i equally indoctrinated?
+Bernise Anders "A large swath of the population being completely convinced of something that is OPPOSITE of their best interest" because of the same devices Chomsky talks about (i.e. the media). This goes back to Edward Bernays and the birth of public relations. Bernays engineered the idea that women smoking is a method of attaining women's rights. People can be convinced of ideas opposing their interests if their information is controlled the way the media is.
People don't necessarily vote for what is in their own interest. They vote for what they believe to be in the common interest. E.g. What's best for America instead of just what's best for me.
But what is in the best interest of a whole nation is much harder to decide than what is merely in your own interest.
The republican media never appeals to self-interest, but instead to things like principles, a commitment to the constitution, values like liberty etc. They don't say "vote for this, then you get free stuff".
I don’t think anyone is immune to the propaganda, we’re all susceptible to it but I guess you’re more aware of the trigger points of what to watch out for etc when it comes to what the media conveys.
1 thing very common with right wing voters is their absolute disdain for mainstream media, yet they watch so much of it & all their convos & talking points around politics align almost identically with what the media puts out. They’re brainwashed but they don’t realise it. Their minds are gripped by someone else’s thinking.

@Only Observing There are no _progressive_ politicians in the US. There are far-right (Republicans) and center-right ( Democrats). Bernie Sanders, _the squad_, and Elizabeth Warren are centrist politicians, advocating for policies that exist everywhere in the developed world (Canada, Western Europe, Oceania, developed Asia). From Universal healthcare, free higher education, to a less militarized, business-run economy (half the federal budget goes to defense, wonder who the US is afraid of, and most American corporations funnel their money through tax havens, shell companies, and use other financial instruments to avoid paying taxes)

Does anyone know the name of the book co-authored by Chomsky and Herman that was suppressed by Warner's shuttering of its publishing company? The only books I can find that are co-authored by the two are Manufacturing Consent (which was not the book) and both volumes of The Political Economy of Human Rights (later given the titles The Washington Connection and Third-World Fascism (vol. 1) and After the Cataclysm (vol. 2).
