This one actually did a good job Astro boys hair change inspired by Mickey Mouse and everything it actually felt like watching an Astro boy anime hopefully we get something like this in the future
Thanks for noticing. Seems like one of the top five characteristics of Astro boy was to at least keep the two hair points iconic and graphic, just like the original Mickey Mouse.
This was the original version of the 2009 adaptation of Astro Boy. It went in a different direction and the end results was that movie bombed at the box office resulting in Imagi Studios cancelling all future movies such as a Gatchaman adaptation and Cat Tale which ultimately shut down in 2010.
oh my god! thank you for uploading this I've been wanting to see footage of this for a long time. Though i have to say, this looks better than the film we got if i'm being honest
This was originally meant to be a dark father son story about the rejection of a son that was inferior to his “older brother” who died. And exploring the nature of what defines life and whether we can cast it away when it doesn’t meet our needs. Instead there was an opinion that this version deviated from the original anime and that the stakes weren’t high enough. So changing the villain from the father to be a power hungry General and going with a softer version of Astro boy was chosen instead.
@@Colin_a_Brady umm understond! i sorta agree with the stakes problem but besides that it would have been much better. you stil have tiny bits of that in the final movie but very very tiny bits also was dr elfun ment to have a bigger role or something?
@@Colin_a_Bradythat sounds soooo COOL!!! And i'm guessing the self defense feature was tenma not wanting astro to get hurt like the original toby. Being the in universe explanation for why he has weapons?
This story sounds like it would've taken elements from the original Manga and the 2003 tv series or shaped it in some form with a bit of different spin.... In terms of the story, this probably would've fit mold as well as being a balanced out plot that while I'm not sure would've been ahead of its time, it would've given something relatable and interesting But something else, Colin,...was there any more concepts art, where there were robots, Astro potentially could've fought, other than Zog, and were there any other characters,or monsters (depending) that didn't make it into final film
Discovering this early animation of the film is a big hit of nostalgia for someone who grew up with the little that Imagi Studios did when it was still active, it's a shame that they removed the original idea of the movie to restructure everything, this looks more passionate and attached to Astroboy's original work, and its really awesome. PD:From the heart of a fan of learning about canceled movies Do you know if the Gatchaman movie was finished in its entirety and if so, do you know if it is destroyed or Is it preserved somewhere? Thanks if you see this comment in advance.
OK so firstly this is AWESOME! way better than basically any part of the finished product. Secondly, WHY HERESY?? Did you happen to pick that out just for this video, or was it already a part of the test trailer? Lastly, Thank you so much for uploading this! I love Astro Boy and was disappointed by the original 2009 movie, so this was cool to see.
Thanks, @sowhazupguy yes I’m very proud of the story that this trailer tells. The song was added the night before a Warner Brothers pitch by a new producing team that came on the week before. Even though we already created an original score for this piece but I reluctantly agreed to the new change of music. But as the old saying goes, never let a camel stick his nose under your tent or he’ll end up sleeping in your bed…
@@Colin_a_Brady man this is all so interesting, I'm sorry they came in and sullied everything you guys had going. Have you done any interviews about this? I'd love to learn more about what happened!
This is awesome!! I've always wanted to see more of this clip!! This would have made a better film. Not only as a general movie, but as an Astro Boy movie aswell. But I do have a question. Who made the decision to change the film? Like, who looked at this and said, "Nah, this won't appel to people, let's change it."

I worked on TMNT at Imagi as an animation director at the end of production. I then became Director of Astro boy (and this particular trailer) until I was replaced when the studio wanted to go a different direction.
@@Colin_a_Brady It's too bad that they replaced you but one more question, would you think about giving a chance to revive the canceled projects and not only that would you also think about giving yourself a chance to make an adaptation of the character but in your style before they replace you?

Say, Colin Brady. I might have asked you this before, but I was wondering. You wouldn’t happen to have a story reel of the Toy Story 2 sequences, Woody’s Lost Hat, and “It’s Buster!” would you? If you do, could you upload them? Pretty pretty please? 🥺🥺🥺🥺 I’m sure a lot of people would love to see those storyreels.
I had hours of behind the scenes videos including a few Toy Story 2 versions when I was a co-Director (we would screen new versions every 3 months) that were sadly lost when I moved to Los Angeles… but I still have a few boxes of of hi-8 and mini dv tapes that maybe one of these days I’ll go through…
This was the movie that Astro Boy deserved. Seriously, I would have loved to see this version, it feels more attached to the original work
I wanna see it badly too
To be honest, this test felt more passionate than watching the actual movie
And more in the spirit of the source material
I’m not lying. I felt like the only thing that was traumatizing from the movie was the… death…
Truly,at least in this one they give an explanation on why he attacks zorg instead of the real movie@@writer6557
Maybe this version would be better than the movie we have today...
0:53 the rocket sound effect here sounds reminiscent of the one always used in the 1963 astroboy show

Yes it was kind of heartbreaking when new management took over and changed the culture.
Gatchaman?? I would’ve loved to see that.
And look at the hair animation for Astro it looks really cool out of a cartoon whenever his hair switches around. It would’ve been great animation.❤👍
oh wow nice catch! I didn't even notice that, but that stays true to the original astro boy cartoon/comic - even if it doesn't make much sense, haha.
