      It could also be a situation similar to the Cooperative Testing Initiative from Portal 2, where the robots aren't programmed to do it initially, they just learn to do it over time, and it just so happened to be an interaction humans are familiar with in the modern age.

    Pixar said SparkShorts is where they give Pixar filmmakers money to create whatever film they want, something that tells a story about them. This is why I love these shorts so much! They tell a story about something, or some things, the film maker experienced or feels. Very powerful!

    One's a shovel that's not the keenest robot around, the other's a hammer that's surprisingly cool and elegant for such a blunt implement. Within roughly 8 minutes, we see how deep their friendship is, their characters, and the struggle that's worn them down for an unknown amount of time. We see them comfort and reassure each other, and even risk everything to protect each other... and finally find a strange sort of freedom, now stuck together with something they're much more fond of.
    Probably my favorite short film of all time. Years later and I'm still watching this over and over. I like it when Pixar animates nonverbal, expressive robots, what can I say?
    What I'd give to see a full-length film seeing these two... Where they end up going, if they'd still be chased, if those sleek fellows living it up in those towers are any friendly.

    • @sophiatalksmusic3588
      @sophiatalksmusic3588 5 ปีที่แล้ว +411

      Yeah, I think so. If you think about it, the two main robots seemed to be shovelling ore to power the train, similar to coal miners. Because they were connected to the train, they were prevented from seeing the world that the high-class robots lived in. Without the blue spheres, which the high-class robots had, they relied solely on the train (their position in society) to give them power, but it also restricted them.

    Honestly I could see a whole movie come out of this, while the steam powered train seems a bit out of place, the idea of two robots that break free from their shackle and enter a city in which no others are like them; could have an interesting plot.

    Really cool animated short. Sort of a futuristic Sci-fi where robots dominate the environment & 2 of them decide to go against their programed duties.
    It does make me wonder why we humans like the idea of robots showing & expressing emotion 🤔.
    In any case, I enjoyed this one!

      They’re sentient. Part of sentience is emotion. When robots become inevitably self aware and actually are able to think for themselves, they will develop emotions and sympathy. Self awareness leads to individuality.
