UPDATE! You must go into WhatsApp notifications and turn on Popup notifications to Only When Screen Off or Always Popup. That is the only way I was able to get it to work. Let me know if that works for you. Gmail does not have the right notifications style to work with this. I will let you know more as I figure it out.

I'm currently deciding if I should buy the S8 or S8+, going around videos, and NONE of them "big TH-camrs" covered this - not even the small ones. Even "In-Depth" Hands on didn't show this. This is amazing, happy I stumbled across this!

I found out that you have to long press the edge lighting area on the screen and it will bring up a bunch more options. I just thought it was the on/off button but it provides a lot more stuff. I hope this helps

It doesn't stay on for long enough imo. Best I can tell, there's no way to increase the time duration
I also would like to see the ability to add time to this feature. Often I'm not staring right at the phone and I wish I could just come in the room and see the light still on and know I missed a notification.

I must be doing something wrong. I tried this with "screen off" and it doesn't work with the screen off. I tried numerous app too, hangouts and a 3rd party sms app. I have the always screen on option turned off but even when I turned that on it still didn't work with the screen off :(

U have to do it from a 3rd party For some reason it doesn't work with the Messaging app that Samsung provides it only works with different messaging apps like WhatsApp or an app called mood

I have it set for always on and all apps, yet it only works for the built-in messages app. Nothing else lights the edge. Disappointing.

Hey Bret! I would like to know if there is a way to increase the time the lighting stays on. Or if you can always have the edge light up no matter what! Thanks man!!
+Shohedul Islam If you select always it show light up all the time. I have not found a way to increase the time yet. In the phone settings you can search for Flash Notifications. This will enable the entire screen to flash on all notifications. Not the same, but it might help.

+MillieD It should just automatically work. The phone just needs to be face down on a flat surface when you get a call.

Not a probelm, the missis was very happy to learn she could have her phone light up like a rainbow and have live kittens for her wallpaper! Its a shame however that the edge lighting doesn't work with WhatsApp, even though there is the option for it (not here in the UK anyway)
