      To begin with, I would love if you put together some videos on doing just simple common tasks in the terminal like, installing a printer with Linux/ Home networking a printer, what to do if your printer is not listed for some reason on the manufacturer's web site (i.e Brother HL-2230) - the steps involved in removing old software drivers to the new.
      Just basic stuff would be very helpful for someone like my sister or my mom...even me.
      sudo apt...then what?
      Beginning the fall of last year, I got the IT bug.
      Once upon a time, I had my A+ and Network + certs and worked in I.T for a couple of years with a well establish firm until the bubble burst in 2001. It wasn't established anymore.
      I worked in I.T for several months after and finally had enough. I went to Iraq - got used as target practice with high explosives and came home with a TBI ...and things related.
      I was just a computer user at that point. Retention of information was troblesome, to say the least. I seem to be a lot better now, and want to really start testing myself.
      My first introduction to Linux was Wary Puppy. It rocked as a tool in repairing and helping me on removing viruses from an old Micronics Win XP box. I liked it so much, I just starting tinkering.
      From there, I've been using Linux Mint since 2013. However... The terminal has been something I've always been hesitant/ intimidated by in learning. My TBI was an obstacle.
      Windows Vista was the last Microsoft product I used until this February with Windows 10.
      I keep Windows 10 for the exclusive use of video games. (and eventual learning more about it) I really hate Microsoft/ Molestersoft and what it has devolved into.
      In my learning of things, I stumbled into the realm of cyber security, due to video's I was watching regarding Open Sense. I was lead to your channel a few months back, I liked what you were talking about and I subscribed.
      There are things out there that are terrifying, I've learned. I have decided that I needed to expand my knowledge and actually learn a whole lot!
      I "think" my TBI may be better now. I seem to be able to retain more information and in better ways.
      The Linux terminal needs to become my best friend, in particular.
      The only way I can have control on most things is to take direct control. Windows, does not allow much of that. In my opinion, Microsoft is a major cog in only adding to the privacy and security problems that we have.
      I'm even considering moving away from my iPhone's and doing a customized Pixel phone. Don't know what to do about a new vehicle yet and the built in spyware and telemetry involved with al that. Yes, my paranoia may sound out there.
      I'm here to learn!

      Was recommended to me, hehe. Nixos and I am also in cybersec. By this time clicking on any video where someone from outside (like LTT) is talking about "Linux" (it's GNU) I just expect to hear a stream of garbage takes that makes me regret having ears.
      Thought here I'll hear something well-adjusted for change idk.
      I honestly still have no idea how any of that sounds for un-initiated, I am just too hopelessly professionally deformed. Why are we here? Just to suffer?

    Me, I'm here to see how reasonable you are. As happens we also use Linux, but the timing of Windows 10 coincided with us retiring. Meaning we no longer needed to collaborate, Use Microsoft Office, or the Adobe suite. It also left me time to explore the world of Linux. Having been a Unix administrator, the terminal didn't scare me, and I cheated in that I used a spare PC to do that Linux exploration. No MS Windows PC was harmed, grin. Learning up front really does help, and I've learned to love Grub. My daily driver now boasts three different operating systems. This 71 year old support guy finds you very reasonable, and Subscribe I did.

      @@CybersecPat Well, I have a long history of operator training and customer support, and was a Technical writer for some 25 years. I had to learn to write simply so that the service manuals I used to create could be translated into other languages.
      I've also been know to help my Neighbours, and help them set up a Linux system. So I know from first-hand experience that Linux can be used by mere mortals.
      I truely wish we were neighbours, as I sure we could swap stories and life experiences. Do you happen to ride a Mountain Bike? I was a hard-core MTB rider for better than 30 years and entered several citizen races, where I finished in the top 5% for my age group.

    A very good introduction. Comparing the use of Linux CLI to Google search bar was brilliant. It's just text, type it in and press Enter. One way of starting with Linux could be getting an old laptop, or desktop, a completely separate PC for Linux use only. Then start using the privacy-sensitive applications on it, keeping the Windows machine for gaming and watching ads. No dual boot or virtual machine just yet. Kind of start from bottom up. Install a very simple Linux distro which has a desktop that is completely different than Mac or Win, yet popular among Linux users (easier to get help). My friend Jorma uses 100% Linux: Ubuntu Studio on an old MacBook Pro (!), multiple Thinkpads with Linux Mint/XFCE. Plus a Raspberry Pi that is essentially a Linux PC.

    10:08 Yes. The operating system is a vehicle to deliver you applications. It can also be a library of code for those applications to use, and an interface between the user space and the bare metal hardware. But that is the end of the job.
    I use Arch Linux with a windows manager called Hyprland. It is barely even a desktop at all. I boot up, and there is my wallpaper. I pull up a terminal with two keys. I can type any application I have installed and it launches.
    When I look at my system resources: My OS is using less then 1 G of memory and less than 2% of my CPU. That's it. My applications that I run have all the remaining resources to run on. That means my programs run snappy.
    I play AAA games such as Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 on my Linux. Yes, there are some proprietary software that some people might really need and I don't. But that isn't on Linux. That is because Microsoft and those companies did some backroom deals to ensure that they would share customers. You weren't asked if this was okay. This was decided for you. They claimed the market and their users as their property in order to keep people in walled gardens and to create paywalls. Now everything is turning towards subscriptions. Now you can't own software. Now you don't get a copy of it, you just get a license that you use. Once you are dependent, they will raise the price of it for features you might not need or want.
    I'm not playing that game any more. My computer belongs to me. My privacy belongs to me. My data belongs to me. They have no right, but expect you to sign over your rights when you become their customer. Apparently people paying out to sign over their rights is quite fashionable and that's why we are going to be the laughing stock of the world for the next four years.

    Some screenshots or screencasts would be very helpful around for example 5:00 when you explain how Windows is weird with their settings app. Also, it's not true that all the Linux settings are in one app. GNOME for example has gnome-settings, gnome-tweak-tool, and dconf-editor, though the last one may be viewed as a regedit program.

    A linux user here specifically Linux Mint. Here are few of my gripes with Linux.I want to use Rhinoceros 3d, Hitfilm express, Filmora, Eon Vue environment generation suit. None of them installable under even wine. Then installed Windows under VM. It solved some of these problems except that even here, Hitfilm installs but doesn't work which worked just fine under normally installed Windows. I couldn't even find a good file renamer software like Bulk renamer utility for windows which is simply absurd. So the thing is many of us want to be expert in a software rather than of a operating system. I am not a system engineer or network administrator. I need some mundane apps to learn and I want to get skilled on those. Windows , Linux , Mac doesn't matter for me. Yes I use Linux because I admire the fact that people out there made a operating system for all people to use for free. And I wish Linux all the best and even wish to donate. I like that it's lightweight and fast and devoid of spyware and ads and also likes the fact that it can be automated easily. But my adoration stops there because of the lack of softwares which is absolutely agonizing because many of us simply want to be a expert on certain softwares rather than certain operating system . And we are not all just noobs out there. I know many people out there who are otherwise very good at maths or at STEM subjects but still somehow they want a straightforward operating system. It's not because of lack of skills by any means. It's just because they too want to dig deep but not dig deep in a operating system but rather they want to dig deep on a certain set of softwares which i think is absolutely fine and should be respected.

    • @CybersecPat
      @CybersecPat  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think you make a very potent point here. The OS is not the goal - the software running on it is!

    • @nekriomycin90000
      @nekriomycin90000 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CybersecPat The operating system will become a goal when you will use your PC as a server or for other purposes where the operating system itself becomes an app. Also I have no hesitation to learn the necessary maths for using softwares like Houdini or for developing add-ons for apps like Blender or Gimp or Inkscape or any software of my interest, be it paid or be it commercial. Also I would like to know programming in c, c++ or python. The point is I (and many I know) are simply not averse to digging deep or even sometimes extremely deep. Many of us including me is absolutely ok with that. The point is we wouldn't like to do this for an operating system untill and unless you will be using that operating system as an app itself like I said in aforementioned scenarios. A bit of scripting here and there is ok. But otherwise we would like it to be as much GUI driven as possible. Another matter of concern is that even in case of using the command line sometimes the script given in the official website of a app doesn't match with what's prescribed in the distro forum causing immense confusion. Also sometimes the apps installed by the software center fails to function properly while the app download from the official website works perfectly fine. So even the software center is not a utopia after all. But what intrigues me is why software of great quality are developed much less frequently for Linux. Ok Windows sabotaging Linux may be a cause. But I think the constantly changing API along with presence of so many distros along with presence of so many formats also makes it excruciatingly hard for the software developers. Who would be bothered and why would be bothered to develop software for Linux given this messy scenario except for some very liberal individuals? Also when a solution like snapd or appimage or flatpack is developed to alleviate this horrendous scenario, to my amazement many Linux user does not like them. That's where I ultimately become doubtful as to what they actually are aiming for. Being the greatest system administrator on earth or the greatest os customization wizard on earth or a wizard in any specific area like image editing or 3d or cad or video editing or you name it. The last set of users are a huge portion of computer users along with those who simply use a computer for browsing and other extremely mundane things.

    • @nekriomycin90000
      @nekriomycin90000 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CybersecPat Also I think app developers remain very much stressed when a certain distro would start to disappear and new one would appear invalidating all the previous coding practices honed up to a point of time. I myself is afraid when Linux Mint may suddenly choose to disappear from the scene 😐. Again I will have to learn new ways just to install all those softwares that I am learning to use which is so irritating to say the least. Windows for all its shenanigans provides a much much more streamlined future in this regard. Yes I like Linux more than Windows. I wish and want it to succeed but I have to remain in a state of constant apprehension. And lastly presence of so many distros is simply simply horrendous. Now if someone say just install any of the top 10 distro, the question becomes doesn't this then invalidate developing so many distros just for the sake of it? What's the point?

    You will spend more time using the terminal in BSD than you will on many Linux Distro's. The software that doesn't work on Linux is because the software companies don't support Linux so that is not the fault of Linux. Linux has no ad's or spyware installed. I used Windows for years and I started using Linux in the early 2000's and for a number of years only Linux. I would not give you a thank you for Windows and wipe it off any PC or laptop I buy used and install Linux.Most average home users will be fine using Linux if you don't expect it to be the same as Microsoft's effort.

    About the apps on Linux. There is no version of, as you said Adobe Suite, but also one-time payed alternative - Affinity Suite. Affinity apps are holding me from switching all in to Linux. There is not a thing like professional design (including DTP and color management) on Linux. There is only one way at this time - Windows VM on Linux. But I have too weak hardware right now. There is no point to dual boot in this case, because if someone is designing everyday, then it would be pain in a butt to do something else. Rebooting for example only for banking, watching YT, taking notes.
    P.S. I guess there is a way to make for example design with CMYK color space on Linux, but you would need to use Krita, Inkscape/GIMP and maybe other app. And it all just for one project, one file.
    Krita supports CMYK, but it's meant to be a drawing software. GIMP makes bitmaps and Inkscape makes vectors and does not support for example CMYK so far.

    Cmon, you dont relearn how to use your PC, the flow is exactly the same.
    And the terminal is barely used now as pretty much everything has been simplified through GUI.

      I've put a few people on Linux desktops (who were interested.) They all had trouble navigating the system for the first hour or so until they got enough hands on time with it to "get" it. GNOME's workflow is totally different from Windows. KDE is closer, but you still can't approach it the same way you would Windows in terms of workflow. Look at the task switcher for example, or how you tailor the GUI to your needs.

      @@CybersecPat You're looking at all of this backwards. People shouldn't be getting used to a particular workflow, the system should simply allow the users to set and use their own workflow. It's something Windows and Mac both suck at, and Linux leans into hard: choice.

      I like that perspective. One of the strengths really is having the choice to decide what workflow works for you.

      I've been using Windows since the beginning. I use Linux as my daily driver now. Why? Because microsoft and every corporation under the sun decided my computer wasn't a computer and was a television to send me advertisements on, even while I was offline.
      My computer is for me and the programs I use. It isn't for every company in the world to live rent free on my hardware.
