    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Problem is, once You get into it a little more, there are no "fake" GTOs, for those were all handmade hacks from butchered donors and modified other cars to match the needed specs for the very course they were intended to race. Ficarra (VinWiki) told the story of LeMans where Ferrari started to take brake rotors from customer cars out in the parking lot just to have what they needed to keep their racers going ..... they did their building business in exactly that spirit even more "at home" in Maranello. I would believe in an instant Enzo might have cheated giving a couple non-GTOs a GTO-VIN to get through with the homologation red tape. Italians ever were extreme ruthless hackers when it came to their sportscars and racers, no matter Ferraris, Bizzarrinis, Zagatos, Abarths and so on. So, the very idea of "real" and "fake" GTOs is a cheap trope overzealous automobile rating agents invented to charge a lot for nothing. With a car for somewhat in the mid range two digit millions, a VIN and a good story is well sufficient to build what the customer shelling out the millions wants. But is that "real" or "fake in its own" ? I'd say it depends on what kind of reality You go for: the money, or the experience. For the experience, a fake GTO might even be the better choice, with the mechanics being way less restricted when it comes to usability, drivability and competitive capability compared to a trope-car someone gave the "GTO"-approval a banker or investment vulture wants, knowing nothing about the experience and not being interested in said experience, either.

    • @JohnDavis-ed5sg
      @JohnDavis-ed5sg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@manfredschmalbach9023 If you modernise the car to give better driveability and roadholding etc. then you are not having the original experience. Most GTOs seem to be still used rather than locked in vaults, but when they break owners don't put in an LS, powerful and reliable though that might be. Build a totally accurate replica by all means, a couple of million should do it, and you have a nice new car that you can use and abuse as you wish, but to break up a lovely car like a 250GTE just to look 'the racer' is not something I like the idea of.

    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnDavis-ed5sg Well, I did not think of a sacrilege like an LS-swap, of course, more like better shocks, better sway bar links, changing angles and leverage in the undercarriage, a modern clutch instead of a Lamborghini Tractor 6 spring one .... better ignition, better oil-circulation .... I wouldn't even go as far as swapping to Lambda mixture regulation, which we built into some less sporty cars together with carburettors when catalytic converters became a thing - works great even without the converters, but I wouldn't do that. Better brakes and things like that though - a sacrilege for original freaks, a must for me. Anyway, only car worth ruining with an LS would be leafsprung american car I reckon 😁.

    I heard Lamborghini tell the story in person to about six people. (Well, through a translator.) It was in 1988 at the 25th anniversary celebration at the factory. He said that he had complained to Enzo that the clutch in his Ferrari was too weak and had to be replaced too often. He told Enzo that his tractors had good, strong clutches and he could show Ferrari how to improve the clutch. Ferrari said something to the effect that "You stick to building tractors and I'll build the cars." I wish I had recorded the conversation with Lamborghini, but there were no smartphones in 1988. It was a great trip.

    Just think for a brief, frightening moment about what the world would have missed out on, had Ferruccio Lamborghini had a guy with even a fraction of Ian Tyrrell's capabilities to bring his wife's car to - we would all have to dream of and safe up for one of his tractors instead (who are said having been solid investments, or that's what You hear at the bar throughout the Padana), and Ferdinand Pïech (whose ancestor Ferry Porsche started with tractors as well before birthing the KdF-Wagen the world knows as the 356 and the "Beetle" these days) would probably never have found the tractor-smithy from Bel Paese interesting enough to acquire it and make Lamborghinis actually usable by crimping in serious cable lugs ....
    What I find interesting is that this white Ferrari-"culprit" with the tractor clutch-improvement has seats/doorboards resembling the color Carlo Riva used to fit out his Ariston and Aquarama motorboats of the era .....

    You are incredible! What an exciting task to authenticate LAMBORGHINI’s beautiful car. That interior color is molto bello!

    The original gold finger DB5 next or is that known and in existence, think it was stolen in Florida. But that’s some bit of history, love it is still in existence. Ok so you can hire Iain to be detective, right I’m a Euro lottery away from buying Steve McQueen bullet Car 😉👍 Could he not have got his works to build a bespoke clutch for the Ferrari.

    This has probably already been mentioned, but aren't there documents available which have the specs of these tractors? Clutch size should be listed somewhere, maybe in parts manuals from the era?

    Wouldn't it have been easier to get the workshop manuals (if available of course) of the tractors and got the dimensions of the clutch from there? That would eliminate taking two tractors apart and opening the right one first time.

    How do you know that clutch in the tractor wasn’t replaced years ago and no one kept a record of that

    Imagine after that lunch with Enzo, Ferruccio must have stormed out, got into his Ferrari and absolutely abused that clutch all the way back home.

    I assume you checked the clutch that is currently in the car? Not that I think the Lambo clutch would still be there since it's been 52 years but hey. Weirder things have happened.
