Enzo Built a One-Off Ferrari with an F1 Engine: Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale - BTS with DTS - Ep. 13

- For a few magical years, the eras of Ferrari and coachbuilding overlapped, resulting in some of the most spectacular automotive confections of all time. Before Pinin Farina became the default designer of Ferrari road cars, there was Vignale, who designed and built the bodies of about 150 Ferraris between 1950 and 1954. These were made individually by hand and so a Vignale design was almost never built in quantities greater than ten. Only two examples of this particular body design were built, and this car, serial number 0313EU, is the only 250 Europa to receive this design.
The mechanical bits of this 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa are equally special: the 22 Europas built are the only Ferrari 250s powered by the iconic “long block” Aurelio Lampredi-designed V12 which Ferrari designed in order to have a large and powerful enough naturally-aspirated engine to run competitively in Formula 1. And it sounds nothing like other Ferrari V12s.
In this video, Derek Tam-Scott explores the sensational combination of race-derived mechanicals and Vignale’s automotive jewelry that make up this car, offering a glimpse into an era where Ferrari was an obscure sports car company turning out fewer than 50 cars a year in order to fund a racing habit.

@@eskamobob8662 Haha no, it’s the equalization of the commentary audio, the program audio is done correctly but the commentary has Hot spots and I’m sure other people with nice audio systems can hear the difference also. I’m a sound engineer, this is what I do for a living. But if you don’t have a nice audio system you wouldn’t know the difference anyways

@@eskamobob8662 agreed he did a great job on that and everything else. Video quality was fantastic, information was extremely informative and researched, dialog was wonderful. I enjoyed it all, just wanted to mention the audio quality so maybe they can address next time. It was like he was to close to the Mic when recording the commentary audio. Normally a sound engineer would ask to get back away from the mic a little bit more so those hot spots do come out at certain points. Which makes distortion in the audio capture. But overall another great video.

That Lampredi V12 is positively one of the best sounding engines I've ever heard. Even through a video and not in person, it was still worth a giggle of joy.
Legitimately tear jerking, it’s just so pure! It doesn’t scream “LOOK AT ME” like modern supercars it just screams *Class* *Elegance* truly a spectacular car and a spectacular engine.

For some time now I have drifted away from my lifetime passion for cars, primarily blaming all the new car spotters and influencers who like cars for all the wrong reasons. I’m glad TH-cam channels like these exist that make me remember why I have had the passion for so long and ignite the flame once again.

Adrian, I could not agree more! All these “influencers” with all the titles of the videos starting with cold start, or straight piped and such. Totally turns me off. But this is a wonderful channel, and this car is simply sublime.

That sound I’ve driven or passengered in many Colombo V12’s from 3.0 to 4.4 litres with 2 or 4 cams and none sound like that. Great film about a car from a part of Ferrari’s history that doesn’t get enough attention.

... but is simply not true. Italy had labour unions since 1912 and especially after WW II many millions were members of these.
I thought that comment was interesting as well. An excellent video but industrialized northern Italy was heavily labor union oriented. Not saying that's a good thing but Ferrari did have a good relationship with his workers.

Never miss a BTS with DT-S. This is one special car. Derek is just the right guy to geek out over an obscure Ferrari effectively nobody even knows ever existed. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a slight bit jealous he got to drive it.

The way you described the shifts is just pure poetry. Those of us that like driving for the sake of driving appreciate this and gosh I'd love to drive a car like this, or just any older car similar to this. It's not about going around the fastest to shave off a tenth here and carry enough speed through the corner leading onto the straight, it's about the senses.
Tail of the Dragon is where this car would rule!!! Or any one of the mountain roads in North Carolina!!! That exhaust tone echoing through the environment is sounds of love!!!!!

I am very familiar with Italian coachbuilders. For several reasons: My Grandpa was a Italian sports car fanatic and owned coachbuilt Alfa Romeos and even a Maserati a 58 3500 GT Touring Superleggera. I remember riding in the back of this Maserati as a little kid.
My Dad used to work for a coach building company in Switzerland as a teenager in the late Fifties. He still learned to build a car from scratch with only a detailed blueprint. Later on he was involved in restoring classic Aston Martins, Ferraris and such.
Fun fact: I knew a great mechanic who used to work for Enzo Ferrari in the early Fifties and later on in the Lancia factory and he was one of the first guys to rescue and fix classic Italian cars from the late Fourties to the early Sixties. That was back in 78. I saw Cisitalias, Lancias, Alfa Romeos, Ferraris and such in his shop. I had one of the very first booklets for valuation of classic vehicles.
The guy asked me: Do you see the value of a 1949 Ferrari 166? I own the Ferrari with the VIN Number 152! I have it stored in Northern Italy!!!
