    I sometimes get looks and comments when I hit on a 2 card 16 and then later stand on a 3 or more card 16. I usually try to give a quick explanation similar to Henry's for my reason. Thanks, Henry, for reinforcing my practice on how to handle 3 or more card 16s'.

    The basic strategy rules weren't made up out of thin air by guys like Henry Tamburin (who made this video) and they sure as hell weren't made up by the casinos. The strategy was derived from millions of computer simulations and if you play EXACTLY according to its rules you lower the house's edge to the bare minimum. So you dudes who think it's wrong to split 8's against a dealer 10 or Ace or who think it's crazy to hit a hard 16 against a dealer 7 or higher are playing scared. The casinos LOVE seeing you stand on your 16's; they LOVE seeing you NOT splitting 8's; and they REALLY love seeing you play that "never bust" strategy (what a laugher that is; you might as well just throw your wallet to the pit boss and let him take what he wants).
    On any given day you could NOT use the strategy and still win money. That's the "blind squirrel finding an acorn" syndrome. But if you play blackjack on a regular basis (once or twice a month) and don't use the strategy, you'll be losing more money than you have to; the probabilities and statistics are against you and the statistics don't lie.

      Yeah, but there are people who think they know better than mathematicians and programmers.

    • @thepakidd5647
      @thepakidd5647 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chad K The money you entered the game with (your "stake") influenced how you played; it shouldn't have but I can see it happening. A long time ago I read that, as a rule, your stake should be 30 times the table minimum to give you a realistic chance of hanging in there and winning money. My guess is that you didn't enter that $25 game with $750 to risk, so your back was against the wall right from the start and that's a tough way to play. But you mentioned that you rarely if ever play casino blackjack; at a $25 minimum, that's probably the best strategy of all.

    • @thepakidd5647
      @thepakidd5647 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@beepbeep8852 Nobody likes hitting a hard 16. Here's why you do it (in Henry Tamburin's own words, the guy who made this video):
      Suppose you are dealt a 10-6 and the dealer shows a 7 upcard.
      If you hit you win on average 30% of the time and lose 70%.
      If you stand you will on average win 26% and lose 74%.
      If the dealer shows a 10 upcard your best play, by a slim margin, is to hit.
      The bottom line is that the statistics prove it's better to hit the 16. That's good enough for me.

    The first one is the only one that is correct. All the others are only applicable to those that are already losers. You're not going to be a winner if your plan is to use basic strategy. Minimizing losses is not winning. Winning is winning. For instance your idea of "composition dependent strategy", if you're obsessing over that, you're already a loser. The correct way of doing it, is you hit on 16 if the count is 0 or negative, you stand if it's positive. The cards comprising your current hand are already part of the count, if your count is up to date. Though for the purposes of that hand, if it's right on the threshold, you might pay attention to the number of cards in your hand that are cards that would bust you. For instance for the example he gave, 16 against 10, if your 16 is 2 6's and a 4, well a 6 is a bust card as far as a 16 is concerned, even though for your count it's considered a low card, so that would count as 2 high cards and a low card, and if the count including that was 2 or less, I would hit that, even though it's a positive count, because the count is misleading since the 6's are being counted as low cards but for the purposes of that hand, a 6 is a high card since you wouldn't want to receive any more of them. But honestly if it's such a borderline case, it doesn't really matter much. It'll make a few cents of difference to your expected return, and just counting cards in the first place will make a difference between winning 30 dollars in an hour on average, and losing 50.

    I have another question. In composition strategy with more than one deck and where cards are dealt face up wouldn't it be better to look at the cards already on the table rather than just your own when deciding on hitting on a sixteen? Does this type of betting ever take into consideration what is already on the table?

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I passed your question on to Henry and here's what he said: "Here's the reason why you hit 16 if your hand contains three or more cards: (Copied from Ultimate Blackjack Strategy Guide.)
      The reason you should stand on a 16 when your hand contains three or more cards is because your hand contains one (or more) small-value cards that are no longer available in the pack of unplayed cards. These small cards are exactly what you need to make a pat hand when you hit your 16. The fact that a few of them just landed in your hand is enough to shift the odds toward standing rather than hitting.
      If you want to take into consideration all the cards that are played to help you decide how you should play your hand (and how much to bet) then you need to learn a formal card counting system. Composition-dependent basic strategy only considers the composition of the cards in your hand. Nothing else."

    What do you think about Free Bet Blackjack where the dealer is I push at 22 but all your splits and double downs are paid??

    • @ZiggyDoom
      @ZiggyDoom 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mathematically speaking, it favors the house because 22 is one of the most common busts for the house. The free bet benefit depends on when you can free bet, and if you can resplit and double after resplittig. The real take is whether you make more money from the free bets or less money from the dealer not busting on a 22. I hope this helps.

    Isn't composition dependent basic strategy really only good or best with a single deck and standing on a soft 17?

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be more effective in a single-deck game, but it is still recommended even for multiple deck games. When I first started playing blackjack, many years ago, composition dependent basic strategy was never mentioned, it was only the total of the cards that mattered (total dependent strategy). It was probably in the past 10 years, or so, that composition dependent basic strategy has become popular.

    I hate casinos. I was a table games dealer for 25 years, if I see just one more degenerate Gambler I think I'm going to be sick! Casinos are some of the worst places on the planet. Don't get me wrong I had a lot of great times, but in my memories the bad times always overshadow the good times, those bad times were so bad. I would rather deal with a crack addict then a degenerate gambler, they are the worst of the worst. I don't know maybe I just have a conscience, but when I was a table games dealer I always felt like I was taking advantage of sick people. I'm so glad that those times of my life are over now.

    Can someone explain pay offs?

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You win even money (1-to-1) for any hand, except if you are dealt a blackjack. Traditionally, casinos have paid 3-to-2 when you get a blackjack. This means that if you bet $10 and are dealt a blackjack, you would be paid $15. Some casinos, however, now only pay 6-to-5 for blackjacks. That means that you would only be paid $12, rather than $15 when you are dealt a blackjack. That change in the payoff more than triples the casino's mathematical advantage over a basic strategy player. We did another video on why you should never play 6-to-5 blackjack games and you can see it here - th-cam.com/video/svNgCBG2LUE/w-d-xo.html

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could consider comps as part of the calculation of of the casino's advantage over you. Let's say that you play at two different casinos that offer the same blackjack game with the same rules and, thus, the same mathematical advantage over you. However, at one of the casinos they will give you much higher comps. Perhaps,.more free dining, plus more free nights in a plusher room. All things considered, you should opt for playing at the casino where the comps are better. After all, you would have to spend your own money for these items if they weren't given to you for free as a comp. And, in that sense, you are lowering the casino's edge.

    • @aran125
      @aran125 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      americancasinoguide
      Still don’t see how that applies to playing a given game tho in terms of the true “house edge”, whether it be blackjack, Baccarat, craps, whatever. Comps are nice, no doubt. But in the end they’re definitely not “free”. At least in my home state we currently have 2 casinos, soon to be 4, and for the amount you spend the amount they give back is garbage. Qualifying for the higher level rewards players card is just a way to get people back, to win your money. I don’t have to tell you Steve you know how it works 😎. Just wish they would give a little more than they do back to the average player, and not iust the high rollers.

I’ve seen so many people not hit a 14,15,16, and the dealer showing 8 and their hoping he doesn’t have 18 and a lot of times he didn’t he have 14, 15, 16, and pull out a 7,6,5, and the whole table lose and then the dumbass is sitting there saying I should’ve hit. I play by myself. I bet $200-300 a hand also so as soon as somebody come to the table I leave unless they’re betting what I’m betting because if you’re not I don’t want you costing me $300 and you’re only risking $25
