I still don't understand why laser aiming modules cost so fucking much. Laser and IR technology are decades old yet we still pay a hefty premium. And I don't want to hear anything about materials and machining. Aluminum is one of the cheapest materials to buy in bulk and one of the easiest and cheapest to machine with minimal overhead.
My guess is they get away with it because NV is such an expensive field to enter. The market for LAMs is pretty much restricted to people who've already spent $5k + on NODs, so there's not much market pressure for budget LAMs the way there is for red dots or LPVOs.
That sweet, sweet government money doesn't help either. All the nicer ones are made to take advantage of military contracts, and why would they sell it to you or me for less than what the government is paying for it? And the government doesn't care about 1000% markups.
I'm certain mass manufacturing ruggedized optical chassis that need to be able to handle recoil and rough handling yet remain in a repeatable zeroed state for a service life of at least a year or two isn't cheap or simple. The Chinese don't care about market perception they want to dominate every market they can, if they could sell us lams that people want to use for >$500 I'm positive they would. I've only done minor work with Javelin & TOW optical systems and even that wasn't my main job so I really don't know what it takes to miniaturize and production/cost optimize these ruggedized optical chassis, though I have a feeling it's a real engineering challenge.
