A true testament to the human spirit Rodney. I am now 44 yrs old and I picked out a Veriflex "California" from a military exchange post in Germany as a kid in 1979. My body now reminds me of the goals I set and the perception I quested with many boards including your "Checkers and Skull" freestyle board in 89'. I realize there is a strong polarization of opinion about the editing in the video, but as someone who has seen Mullen live on more than one occasion since the early 80's, I think the video is beautiful... hear me out.... Back in the day skating was viewed as counter culture and counter productive... lots of people thought it was a waste of time and money, what we "slackers" did with our time. This video shows a level of refined skill and beauty - his mastery of the craft - and it is very difficult for those who still see skating as a waste to deny the elegance. The editing helps it to be much more palatable for those who do not understand it. Understanding is the key to acceptance and positive regard. Personally though, I thoroughly enjoy raw footage with all the blurry moments, edges, and wrinkles, too. Peace.
I don't like the editing because I can't tell what the flip he's doing. I heard him say in an interview that he did a rail 360 shove it to rail in this video, but I can't even tell where it is in the video. I'd like to see it because I've never seen anyone do that before, but I can't because this video sucks.
Who cares if skating was considered counter culture or not? The editing in this video is terrible. The best part about Mullen's tricks are his actual tricks, not some kind of slow-motion blur obscuring everything that actually happens. Heck, the entire video would have been much much better had every trick slowed down to slow motion showing the trick in detail versus whatever crap this video was.

There are very few people who have the chance to say they truly mastered something. What you have done for one sport, is incomparable to any other pro athlete. A toy manufacturer put wheels on a piece of wood and said “here you can buy this and roll around on it” and for 15 friggin years that’s what people did. Then you sir came along and politely said “This thing can do more than just roll” and unlocked potential in a product that would lead it to become a recognized sports league. You did what no one thought was even possible. Did Lebron James create a new way to bounce a ball? Did tiger woods create a new way to hit a ball with a piece of metal? Did Michael Phelps create a new way to swim? Did Mohammad Ali, may he Rest In Peace, create a new way to use a boxing glove? Did Tom Brady create a new way to throw a football? The resounding answer is no. You single handily created a 2.5 billion dollar sport industry, all by transforming a one use product into something with almost limitless potential. It’s now going to be in the olympics this year. Congratulations to what I truly believe is the greatest Athlete of the past 100 years. Well done, Godspeed Rodney.

I am 46 and seeing this inspired me to get back on my board again. I am using google voice to text right now to type this because both of my arms are broken.😞
I think people dont realize, that Rodney has become skating, not a skateboarder - but one with skating itself, like MJ in basketball or Luciano Pavarotti in opera. Pure art.
Wow, Rodney has never ceased to amaze me. I used to skate hard core, I still pick a board from a kid every once in a while and roll around. I love things that spin which is one of the reasons I love building my pulse motors, sometimes using skate wheels as rotors. ⚡️😊
if you want raw footage what any.other.video on youtube. The whole point of this is to be shot in 360 degrees and to be interactive - go to the website and have a look and read Rodney's insights on the tricks and the project as a whole. This wasn't necessarily about creating a skate video, it's more than that.
I like the 360 footage. I just want to hear the board. They could've edited the raw sound to blend with the music. I think that would've been really cool. Add some reverb and what not.
more like hundreds of days he used to practice more than 5 hours (people sometimes said he practiced 8 hours a day) and he's been skating since the late 70s
+Blitzpunk That's your opinion. Mine is that it's distracting and not necessary. I've been freestyle skateboarding for 8 years now and i like to see Mullen's tricks plain.
Rodney Mullen was a socially awkward kid who grew into a man that changed the world with his views on not just skating but life in general. Rodney Mullen may be the goat of street skating but few realize the impact he's had on the world outside skating. 10/10 human being
that was absolutely amazing! half the flip tricks where done with his knees/legs etc instead of feet, he is an artist on a board. the camera blur effects started to really annoy me by the end though. watching those tricks took me back to my childhood, i actually remember as a kid trying to flip the board and land it sideways with feet on the side of the board/ wheels(i couldnt do it though.. also, sorry dont know what its called) , it was a popular trick back then, times have changed...
Upon the discovery of a youth serum/everlasting life, scientists first priority is to immediately administer it to Rodney Mullen so that he can innovate and progress skating once again to the next level.

1:18 definitely one of the coolest freestyle tricks I've ever seen. I wish he landed that
He probally did landed it but the "artistic" editor decided that him yelling was "cooler" to show.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen him land that in his older video parts.
Rick Sanchez Idk but I guess you could call it a truckstand kickflip
Rick Sanchez it’s called a bingo bango wingo wing the Wong numba
dougthealligator Truckstand is "to rail", as you're standing on the trucks. This is an anticasper kickflip.
I want the raw footage. Not this stupid light show. Music is great and the tricks are great though.
I would love to hear the skateboard too.
if you want raw footage what any.other.video on youtube.
I couldn't, it was un-enjoyable for me. Felt like it could induce epilepsy
Tom Middlebrook lol and im epieptic :O
Shaman of the board.
Love that man so much.
Filming is charming too.
Thanks to all who was involved in this project.
Skate God. No one will ever come close to this guys skills in skating :) Rodney, u make my heart glow
Robbas what abt nyjah
You say "skateboarding"
I instantly think Rodney Mullen
Guy is a pioneer amongst skaters...
Five years since i first seen this. yep, still amazing.
This editing took so much away from what Mullen does.
Agreed. Just let me watch what he's put hundreds of hours into without all the effects.
*thousands
more like hundreds of days he used to practice more than 5 hours (people sometimes said he practiced 8 hours a day) and he's been skating since the late 70s
Bullshit, the editing is ace.
10/10 human being
the only man that can release a video part only doing flat ground and be amazing. doing it
This guy is a beyond master on the skateboard. What a master skateboarder
wait wtf, how's that even possible, man is a LEGEND
He changed the way people do skateboarding he literally invented the street, thats why he always gonna be the #1.
that was absolutely amazing! half the flip tricks where done with his knees/legs etc instead of feet, he is an artist on a board. the camera blur effects started to really annoy me by the end though. watching those tricks took me back to my childhood, i actually remember as a kid trying to flip the board and land it sideways with feet on the side of the board/ wheels(i couldnt do it though.. also, sorry dont know what its called) , it was a popular trick back then, times have changed...
Rodney's style will forever be timeless, he's the greatest skater on earth as long as he is living.
Way after he is dead, too: there are no skaters even close to his level. Maybe in another 50 years. Who knows.
There’s literally only 1 person in the world you can give a 10x10’ circle and a skateboard- nothing else- and they can make an insane video out of it
LEGEND... Beautiful as always... Thanks Rodney and Vogue team, such a great video to watch....
Id never paint over that floor. That fingerprint left by Mullen is one of a kind!
Legend. Beautifully done, thank you.
Upon the discovery of a youth serum/everlasting life, scientists first priority is to immediately administer it to Rodney Mullen so that he can innovate and progress skating once again to the next level.
There is no better way to present Rodney than this video right here. Probably the best skate video for the best street skater period. Divine really.
Beautifully put together and shot. Sickening tricks from a legend who is unbelievably still breaking ground. Woah
El mejor skater del planeta!, cuando toca el skate, automáticamente Dios desciende sobre él, lo posee y es inexplicable como Mullen puede tener la capacidad de hacer todas esas variantes y formas. Sin palabras. Jamás nadie mejor! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Who else here is just skipping through bits of this video, and then is about to go look up the classic tony hawk pro skater rodney mullen vids?
2016.. pokemon, rodney mullen and blink 182 all back on the scene. i was born 1990 :D

Zanny Danny haa bulky shake shoes were my life! funny now skate shoes are the complete opposite now
Zanny Danny pogs and yoyos too. i almost didnt understand what you were saying there lmao!
You guys really want your mind blown? Go read the actual article for this. Rodney did all this goofy footed (his opposite stance). NOT just switch he actually relearned all this goofy. Simply amazing.
thank you rodney. watching you since I was 5. playing as you in all the games. you're the reason I cut lawns to pick buy my first deck. thank you.
