I have watched the bones brigade documentary probably 50 times. It motivated me to be a better skater and learn my all time favourite trick. It took me 2 straight years everyday working at it. I learnt the frontside air just because of watching them fly through the air. It was worth every second. I HIGHLY suggest that video to any skateboarder. It changed my life. I quit drugs, ate healthy and realized that skateboarding IS MY DRUG. Thanks Bones Brigade, Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill and Lance Mountain. He is one of the best examples of what being a good human being is, inside and outside of skating. Thank you Rodney, seriously, from the bottom of my heart, we need more people who care and are self-disciplined like you!! You are an absolute inspiration!!
The primo and dark slides he was doing were mind-blowing. Rodney is skateboarding. And i can watch his tedtalks and interviews for days. He really is a brilliant guy.
9:57 I swear to god, these days I always read stories about "the most influential people in Skateboarding history" and I read about Rodney, I read about Tony Hawk, Gonz, Stacey Peralta and they're all absolutely worthy, but Mike Ternasky very rarely gets mentioned. He is definitely under appreciated in that regard as so many of the top skaters from that era, in particular Danny Way, state how important Mike was to them. I mean, without Mike, we would literally have had no post-Bones Brigade Rodney Mullen. In my view he is skateboarding's unwritten champion.
I remember that back in the days we were totally blown away seeing Rodney doing the first primo slides and dark slides. Sliding on the wrong side of the board was so unbelievable. And I guess the technicality of many of his tricks can not be rated high enough. There are still many flip / under flip / pressure flip tricks and manual combos Rodney did many years ago that very few skaters (if any) did after him since then.

Watching Rodney skate is the greatest contribution to skate boarding because when you watch his video parts you feel like you can land anything. It's hard to picture skateboarding without Rodney Mullen!
And such a humble guy too. Safe to say that Rodney Mullen is one of the best ambassadors for skating that ever walked the Earth. Well, rolled around it anyways. 😀
I had the honor of seeing him with the A TEAM at Dodge Park in C-bus OH, AND watching a close friend challenge him to a game of SKATE. Just watching this man on a board is PURE BLISS.
I picked up my first skateboard (a hand-me-down from my older brother) in '96 and watched Rodney v Deawon the following year with my brother. Ever since then, Rodney has been my absolute hero. Ive never seen a more humble, honest, and all around genuine person speak. Even tho i dont have as much time to hop on the board these days, i tell myself, "if rodney's still going, i have no excuse"
Rodney is the guy who just blows my mind he's a god on a skateboard who is beyond driven. He is a genius and I can see he has a heart of gold by how much he shares and I can identify with how he a bit of a misfit and makes his own drum then beat too! Rodney was crucial to modern skating in my world
To live in the same time with the people who pretty much invented a sport is insane. This man is a legend who helped revolutionize what was seen as silly into one of the undeniably coolest things in existence. There are few people in any sports or entertainment avenue that can be looked at as the sole innovator in vital aspects of their industry as Rodney can, that is what amazes me about him.
I went to the video premier of the Globe Opinion video back around 03' and the entire theaters reaction to Rodney's part is something I'll never forget. The guy was like Superman! It seemed like every trick the crowd would go nuts and the standing ovation at the end and the energy inside the theater was insane. Easily one of my favorite personal moments from skateboarding
His major contribution to ME, is his verbal expression. He is just naturally poetic and humble. I love when he speaks, because I just can't miss a single word.
To answer your last question, Rodney's biggest influence in my life is the point in his talk at Pop Tech where he discusses the importance of knowing something is possible vs knowing how to technically do something... how the idea that something is possible (exposure) is more important than the understanding of how to do it (knowledge). That simple insight has influenced my professional work multiple times and with amazing results for both myself and my clients.
Rodney Mullen it changed my life when I met him I finally realized I wasn't alone that another human being was just as obsessed as I was. People were always weirded out by how I watched them skate but that's how we learn.
This brings back so many memories. I grew up watching Bones Brigade and so many other skate videos. I remember seeing Rodney doing the dark slide and thinking that’s so cool. It was one of the many tricks I never managed to get done.
My best memory in sk8boarding was when I met Rodney in Santa Monica. I remember thinking how nice he was and all I wanted to do was make laugh. So we hung out for a bit and did my best. When we left, I heard him tell my friend "That guy is really funny". I later realized that I wanted to make him laugh because he gave me so much indirectly with his love of sk8boarding. Thank you Rodey!
when i started skating i was all about toy machine and thought jamie thomas and kalis were the best in the world. then i met some older dudes who showed me "second hand smoke" i was completely blown away!! .. still my favorite part to this day.

Since I saw this I re-found one of my passions and that is skating my board! Thank you so much guys! You have the most excellent content on skateboarding I ever saw. I started skating when I was 10 years old. Now I’m almost 36. Born in 1986 and I have a 6 months old baby boy. I know what he should learn first…. 🤪I’ll get kick flippin’ right away!
I have watched Rodney’s Ted talks and honestly can’t tell you if him or Steve Jobs had a bigger impact on their industry. Praise your idol/legends while they are here.
Absolute legend. I watched gleaming the cube a few months back to reminisce about something from my childhood and my immediate though of that warehouse scene was “that’s gotta be Rodney Mullen.” Waited through the end credits and sure enough.
Rodney Mullen is the GOAT because he is the best representation of what skateboarding truly is. It’s just dancing with yourself and feeling a sense of control over your world.
Rodney Mullen voted the third most influential skater behind Tony Hawk and Mark Gonzalez. That's funny. The 50 people on the planet that skate vert might think that's right. The millions of people who skate street know that it's Rodney and he's the GOAT.
As a big Rodney fan since ~2006, I knew all those facts besides minor details. Yet, I think I can add about Oust bearings, which were designed after Rodney skated some regular set of bearings and Oust analyzed what kind of damage was done in order to adapt the regular design for skateboarding. Kinda like what Bones have with their "Skate Rated" seal of approval, Oust came up with Machine Optimum Clearance (MOC series) that were even sold Under Tensor label for a couple years (I still have both available at the time types of bearing designs with Tensor logo).
I love Tony Hawk just as much as the next skater. I even met him once and he is an awesome person, as everyone knows. But, man, Rodney has got to be the most influential. Not everyone can get to a halfpipe, or skate vert. Most kids are just skating in the streets looking for stuff to skate on. I'm not saying someone wouldn't have eventually figured it out, but it was Rodney that did. Modern street skating exists because of Rodney Mullen.
Read his book "The Mutt: How to skateboard and not kill yourself" which I highly recommend reading. I couldn't put the book down and reread it multiple times.
Rodney gifted us with bravery, paired with intellect. His willingness to bring out the subtlety of mind into the fray of reality, while shirking the odds, is paramount. In the process, he practically birthed the skateboarding industry. He was legendary to us as young preteens, & teens. We sought to emulate his perceived freedom of movement through impossible lines(soon realizing the sheer volume of work necessary). It was like a improvised street ballet. Breathtaking beauty, in the rough edges of urban sprawl, he showed us the divide, while crisscrossing the edge. 🙏
Pretty sure Rocco took most of the heat for 'ruining skateboarding' for vert skaters back then, but I wonder if Rodney also got hate from established pros at the time. Sure he's the GOAT now, but at the time the vert guys were like the 'alpha' bros in skateboarding, while freestyle was something of a nerdy sideshow. But Rodney flipped that and invented modern, technical, flip-centric skateboarding, cancelling many a slash dog's career overnight. That must have rubbed some people the wrong way, I imagine. Great stuff again, Shredz Shop, Reminds me I still need to check out his book.
I remember it as Rocco and rodney and all the other freestylers were freestyling while streetskateing was being developed by the likes of natas and the gonz and all the great vertical skaters and anyone who wanted to sk8 but didn't want to wait their turn on the ramp. Rodney just helped push it to new levels years later.
You can give tony all the credit you want for making skateboarding popular but at the end of the day we wouldn’t have skateboarding today if we didn’t have Rodney

when it comes to best skateboarders, most influential skateboarders, person who innovated skateboarding most, Rodney is in the category where you can take him out completely and discuss everyone else, just so you can discuss everyone else.
I learned about him from Tony Hawks pro-skater and he was my favorite character to play as then I found out he was real and became one of my favorite skaters to watch
Let me just say this: I'm not a skater, I never skated but Rodney Mullen is on my list of 'heroes of mankind' together with Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Martin Luther King jr, Muhamed Ali, Newton, Kafka, and a selected few more!
I can't tell you how fast I clicked on this video. I never can get enough of Rodney Mullen. He's such an icon. Which is crazy because I started skating right about the time that Public Domain came out. I watched that video so so SO many times. And pretty much every time I would fast forward past Rodney's spot in the video. 😳 Not realizing the influence he already had, and not aware of the skating God he would soon become. The man is a legend. And it's so great that he was such good friends with the other legend of skating, Tony Hawk. So very fitting.

Stoked on this lol. Did a paper on Mullen back in middle school. Got an A. Let's see if you can beat that lol
Damn, send it our way 😜
Rodney is an absolute legend. I always chose him in the older THPS games. I was always in awe watching his clips.
I'm 35 years old and watching his ted talk made me go out and get myself a skateboard. I'm a month in and having a blast!
Thats amazing!
Rodney is undeniably a genius. He's always been a motivator and an inspiration to me with things beyond just skating.
I had the honor of seeing him with the A TEAM at Dodge Park in C-bus OH, AND watching a close friend challenge him to a game of SKATE. Just watching this man on a board is PURE BLISS.
Rodney’s Uber Light and Impact Light decks are my favorite Mullen contributions. I have those decks and despite the higher price tag I love them.
Always making awesome videos and showing people where skateboarding come from, greetings from Colombia.
Thank you 🙏 Glad you enjoy the videos!! 🙌
Flatground ollie was definitely one of his most important innovations.
agreed!
yeah dude thats just crazy how many tricks he made that forms the entire skate style today. Im just impressed it all came from one man..
Rodney is the guy who just blows my mind he's a god on a skateboard who is beyond driven. He is a genius and I can see he has a heart of gold by how much he shares and I can identify with how he a bit of a misfit and makes his own drum then beat too! Rodney was crucial to modern skating in my world
I met Rodney in 1986 at a Swatch Watch demo at Orange Blossom Mall in Ft. Pierce, FL. I still have the signed photo. He’s an inspiration at life
thats epic!
THX GUYS!
Shedz Shop seriously has insight that no one else does (sometimes)
😝 😜 Thank you?! 😉
Thanks i learned and am now even more Inspired by him.
This was a great history lesson and enjoyable.
Thanks shredz
Glad you enjoyed!! Thanks for watching! 🙏 We appreciate it!
I just love his passion and demeanor. So humble
🔥🙌👊
Thank you Rodey!
when i started skating i was all about toy machine and thought jamie thomas and kalis were the best in the world. then i met some older dudes who showed me "second hand smoke" i was completely blown away!! .. still my favorite part to this day.
so good! 🔥 🔥
Living in Gainesville, and skating all of my life (26) now. Rodney is such an inspiriation! And i love knowing that Gainesville has a great to come out of it!
Gainsville has a crazy amount of amazing skaters coming out of there...
Great video!! been a fan of Rodney since 80s. my back is super messed up today, can't really sit comfortably... started lacing up my shoes to go skate at about minute 12, Thank you!!
Glad you felt inspired!! Sometimes just pushing around in the streets can give you that feeling you need!!
Rodney vs Daewon is still my all time favorite skate video. Rodney's part blew my mind.
That was a great video! Mr. Mullen has been my favorite skater since i was a wee tot
Every video ya keep pumping is 💯 legendary @shredz love yee work!
Thank you for watching!!! 🙏 We couldn’t do it without our community! 🔥
Absolute legend. I watched gleaming the cube a few months back to reminisce about something from my childhood and my immediate though of that warehouse scene was “that’s gotta be Rodney Mullen.” Waited through the end credits and sure enough.
"Hate on them below!?" Hahaha. You guys are the best!!
Rodney Mullen is the GOAT because he is the best representation of what skateboarding truly is. It’s just dancing with yourself and feeling a sense of control over your world.
Great video, so much I didn't know about Rodney Mullen (and even Tony Hawks and their friendship).
Very interesting watch :)
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙌🙏
Rodney is to skateboarding as Bach is to music. There is simply skateboarding before Rodney, and skateboarding after.
Great video! Rodney is the best! Love everything about him!
You guys are seriously amazing. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed!! Thank you for watching!! 🙌🙏
Thanks for the history lesson 🙂.
Most important skater of all time. They should rename skateboarding to mullenboarding.
I hear shit like this and can’t help but to tear up a bit. A true pioneer. A true inspiration 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Agreed 🤝
God bless him & top notch Sir, much obliged for the presentation.
Hope you enjoyed! 🙌🙏
Rodney Vs Daewon Rd2 was one of the first skate videos I ever bought, still have a dvd of it, so good!
Rodney is street skating. Listening to his Ted talks really do inspire you.
agreed.
Rodney Mullen voted the third most influential skater behind Tony Hawk and Mark Gonzalez. That's funny. The 50 people on the planet that skate vert might think that's right. The millions of people who skate street know that it's Rodney and he's the GOAT.
Rodney still is one of the best flatland/freestyle skateboarder, his skating influenced the modern skateboarding we have today.
I meet Rodney 30 years ago in Lancaster Pa. He was cool af. You could see his love of skateboarding
Rodney Mullin is a one in a billion type person. Even outside of skating, his personality seems very enlightened.
Today i watched like 4 or maybe 5 of your videos, quality stuff, keep it up buddy.!
Hyped you enjoy!! Thanks for watching! 🙏
Thank you for this informative and inspirational video. God bless 🙏🏼
Thank you guys so much for all the education
Glad you enjoy the vids! 🙌🙏
This thing that you wrote is utterly beautiful man!
His book is great! Definitely worth the purchase.
As a old school skater Rodney is the best thing to happen to skating
🙌🙏👊
this is so badass! thank you for the incredible vid
Thank YOU! For always watching!! 🙏 🙏
@Shredz Shop you are welcome ❤️ how can you not love your content, you'd have to be mental 💪💯 keep killing it legends. Hometown Love 🙏
You can give tony all the credit you want for making skateboarding popular but at the end of the day we wouldn’t have skateboarding today if we didn’t have Rodney
WOW THIS SHED ALOT OF LIGHT INTO LEGEND KNOW AS RODNEY MULLEN...AWESOME VIDEO
🙏🙏 Glad you enjoyed!!
Saw Rodney and the Bones Brigade team in the late 80s at the CNE in Toronto. That was an awesome experience.
That’s epic!
Round Three was the first skate movie I ever bought on dvd. Then Chicagoff or however it’s spelt by Volcom (Pink Floyd Version). These vids bring back memories fr. You should do a vid about melodi!
when it comes to best skateboarders, most influential skateboarders, person who innovated skateboarding most, Rodney is in the category where you can take him out completely and discuss everyone else, just so you can discuss everyone else.
I learned about him from Tony Hawks pro-skater and he was my favorite character to play as then I found out he was real and became one of my favorite skaters to watch
🔥 🔥 🔥
2:30 I’ve got that t-shirt and it’s always been one of my favorites. Yay.
Let me just say this: I'm not a skater, I never skated but Rodney Mullen is on my list of 'heroes of mankind' together with Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Martin Luther King jr, Muhamed Ali, Newton, Kafka, and a selected few more!
I'm 38 and Rodney has been my favorite skate since 14 or 15.... he is the #1 GOAT
