Another interesting thing you bring up about developing empathy from reading. I really enjoy movies and tv, but in my opinion very few of them touch the soul in the way that books and music do.
Listening to music is like asking the question, “do other people feel what I feel?”, while reading on the other hand is more like “can I feel what others feel?”

I know what you meant about Goodreads. Personally, I have never read more in my life than I have since I started keeping track on GR. I have to give it partial credit for getting me back into reading. However, I don’t always get that much out of everything I read (tending to speed-read through something I’m not feeling just to finish) and it is annoying how it doesn’t take into account reading a short story, poem, or something else here or there. So there are pros and cons
