What a beautiful solid Red cedar Trunk...and you did a beautiful job Sarah 🥰❣️👍....Here's a Fun fact for anyone who wants to Know is Shellac Was the go-to sealer back in the day and it was Made from the Shellac Beetle shells with denatured alcohol. ..Which is Probably why This technique that Sarah just showed us works with breaking down the old finish. .maybe it reactivates it or just simply breaks down the finish ..hope this helps 😊👍
I've never seen a chest with the decorative pieces this one has plus what looks like cedar on the outside. I'm so glad you didn't paint it, I love the grain and color variations of the wood! It's a unique and gorgeous piece! 💖👍😃
I just purchased a trunk similiar to this one. Didnt realize it was gonna be huge. I got discouraged and was gonna place it near the apt garbage area. Its an old caswell runyan. Its need this sort of work but it has huge potential. Thanks for this!
I found that it helps to start with a heat gun and putty knife. You'll get the bulk of the shellac a lot quicker, and you can go in and finish with alcohol/sandpaper.
Helpful! I'm removing shellac from a cedar bed frame today, and steel wool was a good bonus tip! I'm just going to stick with the shellac finish though and apply a fresh coat. I'm a big fan of shellac now that I've learned to use it.
Omg!! Beautiful!! I have a cedar chest thst was given to me. Its in pretty bad shape!! The lid came completely off. The wood split across the back. The entire chest is flaky, craclkly looking. Could you do a video showing how to replace the lid?
Beautiful work, great commentary, and a lovely piece on which to work your magic. I noticed what appear to be some shellac "bubbles" at 8:28 in the video. What is your logic for leaving them, if that's what they are?
Wow! Gorgeous. Does the shellac seal the wood too much for the cedar scent to come through? Either way, that old finish needed to come off. Looks great now.
Good luck trying to find denatured alcohol in Calif. It is illegal to sell here. If you can get some 95% or 100% rubbing alcohol from the pharmacy, it's basically the same thing. It's used for thinning shellac and will dissolve the shellac. Also, to keep the alcohol from evaporating too fast, flood the surface and then cover with aluminum foil or some sort of plastic. this will allow the solvent to do it's work before evaporating. Work small sections at a time.
It will if you use it improperly. But if you go lightly and slowly and move up in your grits (80, 120, 180, 220 something along those lines depending on project) then it will erase any marks you start off with.
I’m afraid of removing the old shellac on my first antique flip because I love the existing color - does denatured alcohol not remove underlying stain?

Thank you Grammy Bear!
Beutiful trunk! Fun to something different. Looks so much better without that failing shellack. 🙌🙌
It was nice to do something different for a change 🙂

Isn’t it funny to think of it being beetles! It’s kinda cool what people have invented- I’d have never thought of using bugs to protect my furniture
@@OurFurnitureFlippingAdventure 😂😂❣️I know right
What an unusual and interesting chest. Good information about shellac and it’s removal, but your narration is the star of this one. Very nice.
Thank you 😊
Very nicely done! I love Howard Feed and Wax! Taking off that dated railing trim sure made the piece look more updated and was a great choice!
Thank you!
You've done such a great job. I'm glad you didn't paint this treasure chest. Even without a paint it has so many colors. Beautiful piece!
It was to interesting to paint over for sure!
Beautiful job!
♥️Thank you

EXCELLENT info! I was wondering how to tell the difference between shellac and lacquer.
That cedar is beautiful!
Such a beautiful piece! Well done I love it!
Thank you 🙂
Awesome find! Love how this turned out, Sarah. Sometimes it's a simple makeover that makes the biggest impact.

That was a shot of the “BEFORE” condition, as clearly labeled in the lower right side of the frame.
Love it!

The inside was raw so it would have that scent on the inside I suppose!
I bet you amaze yourself with what you fix, create, restore & more!
You are so wonderful to watch!
Upstate NY'er has her 👀 on you!
You are always an encouragement- thank you ♥️
Great job! Thanks for sharing!

Will the orbital sander leave swirling marks?
