I used to have one of those Clio Williams when I was a young man. One of my favourite cars of all time! This was a real blast from the past - yep, flaky 90’s interior and skittish ride on bumpy roads BUT…. that thing flies! No sense of inertia, it almost felt like a skateboard the way it scuttled down the road. Magical steering and predictable lift-off oversteer, it’s one of the greats. Plus it looks awesome, a muscular chunky little nugget of a hatch-back. “Oh Papa” indeed!

Ironically there was NO tie in with concerns to design or engineering between the Williams F1 team and Renault sport.
The only link is the name, which always seems odd.

As a 20 year old with a love of classics, I love the element of very little creature comforts and I like driving old hatches on motorways, I adore the Williams 2 and it's my dream hot hatch for sure. I hope they don't get too much steeper in the next 10 years for my sake!

Good to see the Clio Williams. A 2.0L in a little shopping car was always going to be fun.

Great vid and agree with your joint summary, though I think you were harsh on the Clio Williams regarding understeer: I noticed it has Michelin CROSS CLIMATE tyres on, and this will do the grip and turn-in no favours. Otherwise 10/10. Nice to see this Williams - related car tested the week Frank Williams died, kind of a nice little tribute. 👍🏻

    • @BarneyWobba
      @BarneyWobba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree, both with the timing and the understeer. Crap tyres will do that. You can easily get the car to lift off oversteer and then balance it with the throttle. Takes a little balls and practice though :D

I agree with @moosta16. Comparing Lancia Delta Integrale or an Escort Cosworth should be a right task to do. Either than this I am an ex Williams owner too. In my opinion Williams is the explanation what should have be a hothatch to be like. Honestly saying I have owned Alfa 33 1.7 16V, Peugeot 205 Gti 1.9, 106 Gti, Opel Astra F Gsi 16V, Citroen C4 Vts 2.0 16v but Williams is Williams is. Far more better car than all. Much safer to keep the Yaris if you have to chose between both of them!!

Just think I like torque over power...full stop ! - I hated the 2003 Exige I had (no torque) and also the 1993 Integrale (no torque) and a 2006 182 Clio Renault too. On the road for me torque is king 👑 and even the MG Metro Turbo I had in 86 I liked as it was sweet when on boost ! The Uno turbo my mate had though was a bit pants !

The Williams is an iconic car of the 90's. On a track, the Yaris will demolish the Williams, but outright pace is not the factor that defines this comparison. The Williams is an iconic car of the 90's. It will always be so, the King of the 90's hot hatches. The Yaris is an amazing achievement with that 3 cylinder engine, but there will always be a more powerful car brought out somewhere down the line. The fact that this video still refers back to the legendary Williams is a testament to how much of an impact it has made since it's launch in 1993.
I've driven many Williams's over the years and have many fond memories. A few were chipped, they got rid of that very low 6500 RPM limiter and went to a much more satisfying 7200 RPM...mixed with a tuneful exhaust, it transformed the car into something more akin to it's Grp. N. rally cars.
I actually have a Williams 1 tucked away, in pieces currently. Prior to mothballing it it had 220 bhp and about 830kg. Trust me when I say IT WAS F*CKING RAPID.

A moment for Mr. Frank Wiliams, who will be greatly missed. The great debate today does your car has this technology if not you are considered outdated. In certain instances perhaps, for example, braking systems are far more advanced, stability control to name a few. The big question I have is why on earth do we need monitors in cars. When I get into a car I drive with my eyes on the road. Unfortunately, people think with all the technology in automobiles they are safe. With the Clio Williams you don't have electronic repair bills or messages telling you your car is sick.

I also was going to buy a Yaris but changed at the last mind to a bmw m2 manual .I also have the obligatory old school hot hatch - a 1983 golf Gti . So here’s the issue, we all end up using and enjoying the cheaper cars . The more expensive ones get closeted away and barely used and as a result not enjoyed . One day we will be on our deathbeds wishing we hadn’t spent our lives driving the cheaper cars and storing the good ones for someone else ! Group therapy would be a good idea !

clio wins on looks department for sure and cooler.- interior is class and the alloys are cool retro speed lines - 15 alloys on fat tyres handle great on UK roads and comfy to.

30k for a Williams 1 is nuts, 30k for a Williams 2 means you need to be in a lunatic asylum. They are realistically worth about 5. You can buy a 16v for 3 and put an f7r in it and you effectively have the same driving experience if you fit the williams front suspension (total cost probably 5k). People who pay 30k are nutters and need locking up. 1300kg for the Yaris. No thanks. Just like all modern cars it is too big and too fat. And you talked about the wheels but totally overlooked the fact the williams has a massive advantage due to its 7kg wheels. The MK1 clio is also one of the only cars that you can fit any of its own part (including all body parts) in. You can actually fit a bonnet and a tailgate in the back of the clio at the same time. So it not only pisses on the Yaris for fun, its also more practical. Plus you get 40 mpg on a run. Also the seats in the phase 2 mk1 clios are probably the best seats in any car ever.

I think my 1982 Saab 99 GL remains my favourite! I like my big windows! Comfy seating, 2litre power, it’s fast enough for today’s roads & built like a tank! Saab built these to win rallies in Sweden in Winter!

It is crazy to know that 0-60 of this Yaris with 1.5 litre is a touch faster than my 987 Boxster S with 3.4L proper flat six. wow just insane.

If you remove the tube from de airbox of the clio it will make a very nice hauling noise when giving it the beans :)

I would take the Clio, nobody will give the Yaris a second look. The Clio makes it into the Heinz Beanz can. 👍

Us Americans have the engine and the drivetrain but we have to suffer through a shitty 4 door-only Corolla chassis that weighs more than the Yaris

Good episode Jason and Damian. I think Av use to have a blue Renault just that colour, not sure if it was this model though, then she moved to VW’s. Great to see you both, take care guys.

I think she might have had a Renault 5 in blue, not sure about a Clio, but she might've.

My mate had one , it handled really great but my corolla 1.6 GLI 120ps could beat it down the motorway no problem. Above 70 it hit a wall.

I would auction a Renault if I won one as a prize, but doesn't the Clio look elegantly designed, stylish, in proportion, and subtle, compared to the white angular, oh dear Yaris. Understand the concept from earlier videos, but where is the feel good factor away from a track. As always, personal choice and I am sure Toyota will sell lots.
