      >the game has changed
      That's not true at all. The physics are the physics, the math is the math. That has not, and will never change. The only thing that's changed is people now *ignore* the math, and then wonder why their stereos sound like crap. The consumers have simply become ignorant. Worse than that, willfully ignorant. If 20 years ago, you'd ask your average stereo consumer what Thiele-Small Parameters are, and thanks to the magazines like Stereo Review, Car Stereo Review, Car Audio & Electronics, and even Auto Sound & Security, everyone would at least have an idea. The magazines really did try to educate the consumers. All that is gone now, and if you ask someone today about TSP's, they look at you like you're from Mars. This despite having all of the knowledge in the world right at their fingertips.

      @@michaelbloom5342 You hit the nail on the head! I got into this hobby back in 1985. Your absolutely correct about the reading material on hand with good solid guidelines explaining articles such as Thiele-Small Parameters, but unfortunately math was my downfall. My first installation was in my 1978 Chevy van with four Pyle 10" in a custom box between the wheel wells, sized as per Pyle's recommend volume and port size. I didn't have the money to buy a new amp so I scored two well used Rockford Fosgate four channel amps (50 watts RMS per channel) specs that I got from Car Stereo Review buyers guide. One of them didn't work. Having a electronics background I was able to repair that amp. Problem? The turn on transistor was missing, the turn on wire wasn't like the one used on today's amps, it had to sense a current draw. RF said to connect the positive wire from the head unit to create a current draw. Then I had to figure out the 5 pin din connector they used to power the dashboard mounted equalizer to RCA connectors. I purchased a Kenwood CD player ($600) with no radio. They just came out on the market, unfortunately it skipped every time I hit a bump in the road. I took it back to Crazy Eddys three times and they couldn't fix it. So I demanded a new unit and by then it included a radio module. Sorry if I went off on a tangent, I could go on and on....

      @@michaelbloom5342 Well you are wrong about that it has changed since the 90s or the 80s and it always continue to change due to it improving.

    • @michaelbloom5342
      @michaelbloom5342 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BenaresDarkness The one and *only* thing that has gotten better is the digitalization of processors. And even then, a lot of that is wasted, because trying to find a head unit with digital outputs is difficult to say the least. In the 90's, pretty much every single high end head unit had TOSLINK out. Try to find that now.
      The vast majority of amps today are far, far worse than what we had in the 90's. The slew rates have gotten so bad, the manufactures won't even list that value in their specs anymore. And don't get me started on reliability. Most of today's amps are made in Communist China by those poor souls making 2 cents per day, using the absolute cheapest possible parts. They're almost universally junk.
      The amps we got in the 80's and 90's were all handcrafted in the USA (mostly in Arizona), using the highest grade parts available, populated on Mil-Spec circuit boards. Each and every *individual* amp was bench tested to assure it *exceeded* factory specs. Then, Rockford went one better, they physically beat on each and every single amp they made with a rubber mallet, just to make sure they would hold up. This is the reason that an amp bought 30 years ago still works to this very day.

    I just bought a Concept Enclosures 15" sub box on eBay for my 15" Skar Audio SVR-D4. 4.25 cu ft, 6" front firing port, birch plywood (two layers on the front!). Tuned to 32 Hz. All for under $350 (they let you customize it before ordering). Been doing car/home stereo since the early 1980s. This sub box is incredible...the output is insane. I agree...most of the cheap crap on Amazon isn't worth the cardboard they are packed in. You want deep bass...having more space & tuned porting by pros that know what they are doing is KEY. I have the single 12" of the Skar box and was really impressed with it overall when it arrived. Its solid and has a nice kerfed port and the bit of overhang above and below the speaker mount help provide a bit of clearance/protection to the speaker when I need to slide the seat all the way back. I have it in a 90s model extended cab Ranger. It fits with room to spare if you have a Ranger/Mazda Bseries extended cab and were wondering. I couldn't find any info online when I ordered but assumed it would fit one way or another. I could probably fit 2 sitting regular or if I stood them on their side I am almost certain 3 would fit, maybe 4. It stands on its side and stops an inch or two below the rear window which presents some interesting possibilities. The wires are a bit short but manageable and easily replaced if need be. I have had 3 different subs in it with not issues connecting the wires.

    I got one of those cheap 5/8 prefab dual 10” center-vented boxes for free (exactly like shown at 0:48) I measured and it was 2.5’ cubed internal vented space (raw) with a huge port. The tune was calculated right about 48hz. Safe for most subs but FAR from what I wanted.
    To get a 36hz tune it needed less port area for the set port length. I reduced the port floor and ceiling distance with scrap, closed off the voided port area front and back, and wrapped it in a layer of 1/2” for rigidity.
    A free box, a few hours of calculations and cutting/gluing scrap = DEEP bass that sounds great. It can be done if you don’t have time to start from scratch.

      Actually tuning high is not safe at all for most Subs... because what happens below tuning is the driver acts like it is in free air...The port is no longer resonating, so the port is essentially just a hole in the Box below tuning. This unloading of the driver can cause ripped spiders ,surrounds, or damage to voice coil from smacking the backplate

    I have 2 of the GSR 12's, they sound beautiful; 1 in 2.5 cuft, tuned port to 32 hz, the other in a 2cuft sealed box in my home theater subcabinet converted from an old console stereo. Powered with 200 watt plate amp, I can feel movies sitting on my back porch. Skar or JL prefab are about the only ones worth buying.

      The wording is confusing. A normal ported box will have a rear port. A single-reflex bandpass (most call this 4th order) will have a front port and a dual-reflex, parallel-tuned bandpass ( ie. a sixth order) will have both.

    Everyone keeps saying the baffle is weak, but it seems like bolting a lipped steel ring (the speaker) to the hole would stiffen it quite a bit.
    It would be interesting to see someone run some boxes with air pressure in solid works to get a better (real) idea of where bracing needs to be. Everyone seems to add 45s to corners and other stuff but placement always seems random and many cases where I know a simple horizontal gusset would be more effective

    I honestly think that first box was tuned even higher, I have a slightly bigger prefab with 3/4 MDF construction, and its port goes along the back wall of each side, and its tuned somewhere between 40, and 45 hz, I know this port will take more airspace out, but based on my old box it seems like itd be tuned closer to 50hz..

I think that old prefab I had was 36w-14.5h-19d all in inches, I have to recheck to see what that first boxes dimensions were

    • @mattwells1036
      @mattwells1036 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah relooking at the actual dimensions of the first box it's a decent chunk smaller, so the interior space per side is probably smaller, at best the same as my old box, so that sucker is tuned high.

      8 gauge is huge for speaker wire. Consider smaller wire. You can also grit some crimp connectors and crimp two wires onto one wire and then just connect that single wire to the terminal.

    I was not impressed at all with my Atrend Ram 1500 "B-Box" from Amazon. I complained and they gave me a partial refund. The pictures showed a nice, metal, push to connect speaker terminal. On the actual box was a cheap plastic thing that couldn't even fit 12 gauge wires, so I had to change that. #2 The "caulk job" was very sub standard, so I had to re-seal it. #3 It specifically said and showed that it came filled with poly fill. It arrived empty, so I had to run to the craft store. I normally build my own enclosures, but the one for the Ram Crew needs some really complex shapes.
