    Loving the CR series! Maybe do an interview with your mom? I am currently in CR school and I have been interested in working as an official. 😊

    8:00 Stenovations Lightspeed Writer / Zenith? StenoKeyboards Asterisk?
    8:05 Neutrino Group Infinity Ergonomic? Cheetah Systems Gemini Revolution Grand / Piper / Concept?
    For such a niche thing, the range of different hardware available is surprisingly wide. Thanks to things like the Open Steno Project, there's even people who learn steno as a hobby or for ergonomic / health reasons, not just for professional court reporting. Being able to learn the basics and practice that on a cheaper regular* keyboard instead of a professional machine lowers the barrier of entry by at least an order of magnitude.
    * membrane keyboards require some gimmicks, a mechanical keyboard with N-key rollover is preferred and there are way more ergonomic options out there in the 50~125 USD range as well; ortholinear or column staggered keyboards are better suited for chording and split keyboards offer a lot more ergonomic improvement potential.

    Great advice - DON'T take the exam just to feel what it's like. Only take it when you're ready!

    Just now beginning to explore career late in life and have had no real experience listening and directly documenting what I’m hearing. I might have no aptitude for it. NRCA has a 6 week class to help with this decision, and I’m wondering if anyone here has taken the course (“A to Z Programs”).
    I’m also not finding many schools in Texas that NCRA recommends. I am in Harris County and surprised there is nothing here locally.
    I would love it if your Mom joined you for one of these episodes!
    Thank you Chloe for putting this information out there. I wish you the best in luck and love. Your mom must be very proud of you. 🥰

      hi! i am in texas & have been doing some research as well because im also interested in this field & what’s i’ve found is that there is two schools in houston & arlington or online from courtreporterathome & they will get you a job after you finish as well!! idk about the schools tho. they are way more expensive than the online program i found so i stopped looking into them. lol also i found from another video that the A to Z program is helpful to take before classes because it teaches you all the letters & alphabet

    Thank you for these series!! I'm learning so much. Someone else mentioned it, but an interview with your mom would be awesome!
    Another question I had was: how what's the transition like from freelance to official courtroom reporter, and vice versa? Curious what you know from others in the field. Thank you!!

    I have a couple questions maybe you can answer in a future video or in the comments
    I have piercings (eyebrows, helix, etc) and tattoos. Is there a specific dress code or look I need to follow?
    As a guy, do I need to wear a formal attire ie a suit&tie or can I get away with casual formal like a dress shirt with no tie or t-shirt with a blazer over?
    Do you think anyone can reach over 225+ wpm or do you think some people just dont have that "ability"? I've read experiences online where people couldn't break through 225wpm
    Thanks for making these btw it really makes this career more comfortable to commit to!

    My question is - do you have to go to Court Reporting school in the same state that you want to work? Or can you go to a school, graduate, and then take the state examine for whichever state you want to work in?

      Good question. I was thinking the same thing! I live in FL but plan to move and live in TX and want to be sure I do this correctly.

    • @thechloesalazar
      @thechloesalazar  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Honestly I’m not too sure, I think it could be okay. You just have to pass the state exam for the state you want to work in. So make sure you’re prepared on the specific’s states rules when you take the written part of the exam. But the learning the machine is probably similar

    Do you need to learn about the law in order to have a basic understanding of legal terms and whatnot, or do they teach you this in Court Reporting school?

    • @thechloesalazar
      @thechloesalazar  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In the school I went to there was a class that taught some Latin terms, as they are often used in legal settings. But other than that, you kind of learn along the way!

    I am a retired court reporter. My advice is to write as short as you possibly can. Also add your endings into the main stroke. Don't come back for the endings. So, for example, STARTING = STARGT, not START/-G. STARTS = STARTS; STARTED = STARTD; STARTER = STAERT. Also, use -DZ for your ING endings when the -G is already part of the main stroke. So BAKE - PWAEUBG. BAKING = PWAEUBGDZ. I don't know why the theories out there aren't teaching this. The only one is Mark Kenslinbury (sp?). This will save you a lot of strokes and help you hang on when people are speaking fast. Come up with your phrase starters and endings. This will help shave off a lot of strokes too. My stroke for DID is SDL (STKHR). E for he, AO for she, EU for I, AE for they and AOE for we. "Did she answer?" SDLAONS. "Did you know?" SDLUFN. I use FN for know and N for no. "Did you remember" SDLURB. "Did she take" SDLAOFRDZ. And practice, practice, practice!
