I have a lot of questions and I’ve been through your videos but one of the questions that seem to get ignored or not answered is salary as a freelancer. The other question I have is with court reporting, what was your experience like when there was a recession or massive layoffs in the job industry. Third question I have goes back to salary, most court reporters are still only making in the 55k range and I wanted to know if freelancing had been more liberating in terms of finance as a court reporter. Thanks.

Ive been in CR school off and on for 6 years and quit because i didnt think I'd like it. Now, struggling financially, working 2 jobs, i think maybe i should give it another try. I was testing out of 180 speed so was almost there. The financial freedom of it all is what appeals to me.

Hi, thank you for your videos. If you do another Q&A my question is: are you at all worried about AI taking over in the years to come and your job becoming obsolete? I am thinking about starting school but am also nervous that 3 years from now AI will be advanced enough for that to be a possibility. Thanks!

I was a court reporter for fifteen years in a small court in Indiana. When I was in college in 1980 we learned computer aided transcription (CAT) but I never made the transition to computer - I was strictly typewriter transcription manually from my steno notes. Looking back it was a fascinating profession for me as a young person. All the slouching over a stenograph machine led to a lot of shoulder and neck issues but years later and completely recovered I have a lot of great memories from a lot of fun and crazy cases.

What are your thoughts on voice recording or digital recording vs steno? Are they both in as much demand or not as much as steno? I am looking at steno as a second (later in life) career but concerned with the time it will take to get through the schooling. Thanks!

As a freelance Court Reporter, do you do your own production or do you have a firm do it? I guess I am wondering what you do when you have a mass amount of exhibits that need to be scanned or printed for copies and if there are any oversized exhibits what do you normally do? And do you print and bind your own transcripts?

Can you share the amount of flowers you ordered from Trader Joe’s? I’m having a hard time figuring out how much I need to order. I went into Trader Joe’s yesterday and they said they weren’t sure if they could order that many (I said 10 cases of baby’s breath for reference). I want something similar to what you did. White roses, some hydrangeas, and a lot of baby’s breath!

I don’t blame you I have had that thought also in the midst of doing my research but so far all articles and majority of court reporters say or know for a fact there is no need to worry about AI taking over the field and that the job security will always be there especially for ones who choose to be a full time court reporter for a firm. It’s a field that the job growth will always be steady and the job will always be needed.

Great advice about setting a budget. Spot on! Also getting married on a weekday is HUGE savings. For the invitations printing info on the ftont and accomodations and other details on the back saves a lot of money. You can also include a QR code on the back for rsvp. The last suggestion to help save money is asking for quotes for a "party" instead of wedding reception. As she stated in the vudeo, once the word wedding is heard the price for the same items automatically increase. I also had a wedding with no alcohol which cut our budget by 35% and did not impact the experience. This video shares a lot of gems.

8:00 Stenovations Lightspeed Writer / Zenith? StenoKeyboards Asterisk? 8:05 Neutrino Group Infinity Ergonomic? Cheetah Systems Gemini Revolution Grand / Piper / Concept? For such a niche thing, the range of different hardware available is surprisingly wide. Thanks to things like the Open Steno Project, there's even people who learn steno as a hobby or for ergonomic / health reasons, not just for professional court reporting. Being able to learn the basics and practice that on a cheaper regular* keyboard instead of a professional machine lowers the barrier of entry by at least an order of magnitude. * membrane keyboards require some gimmicks, a mechanical keyboard with N-key rollover is preferred and there are way more ergonomic options out there in the 50~125 USD range as well; ortholinear or column staggered keyboards are better suited for chording and split keyboards offer a lot more ergonomic improvement potential.

14:47 per diem is latin for "per day", looks like a legal term that probably originated in labor/tax laws/regulations concerning compensation for travel/field work related expenses and got carried over to other occupations where task duration is unpredictable.
