In India, Sir Issac Pitman's Shorthand rules the field. It is a manual Shorthand system. That is, as and when the word is uttered by the speaker, the Stenographer writes the phonetic outline/strokes of the word OR the combination of words on a lined sheet or notebook following the Pitman Shorthand system. The outlines are not recorded on a machine by the steno but on a lined Shorthand note. It is sound based. Not spelling based. So the System has been slightly modified to make Shorthand systems in other Indian languages too, like Tamil. It has transcended language barriers in its use. People normally easily write upto 120 words per minute(wpm). I am a stenographer and passed 150wpm. Worked as a Court Steno also. Speed Star magazine author famous Mr.Rajagopalan of Villivakkam, Madras has passed the 200 wpm Exam conducted by Government and contributed much to this subject. It is immediately readable/typewritable in English from the shorthand note. Late Mr.K.S.Ayyar was very famous in India and in Britain in Pitman shorthand and authored several books during the British time and his books were published by the Pitman Publishing House London. Now the Steno Guild T.Nagar Madras is doing an excellent service in this field. There is a lot of demand for efficient qualified stenographers in India also.
Absolutely untrue that anyone can do this job. The fail rate in schools is astronomically high. I really don't think it serves anyone well to say that "anyone" can do this.
