    I like to attach the linkage before installing the carb onto the studs it really helps especially someone with big hands/fingers like myself.

    • @chrisc9406

      The throttle linkage was removed from the carburetor after carburetor removal so reinstall should be the same procedure in reverse. Therefore as stated the linkage should be reattached to the carburetor before carburetor reinstall. The carburetor was not disassembled so there was no need to detach the linkage from the carburetor. The linkage could of simply stayed attached to the carburetor on disassembly as it was already detached from the handle.

    I replaced the fuel and impulse lines on my 029 Super. I may have read this tip in the comments here or somewhere else. I used a piece of 6" or longer bare #14 copper wire to push through the new impulse line. Have it stick out the end a half inch or so. Insert the copper wire into the barb at the crankcase to use as a guide. It's a perfect fit. Just slip the new impulse line down the wire and onto the barb, pull the wire out. So much easier than trying to get your fingers in there or using other tools.

    Hemostats is what they are called. I use a little liquid soap on rubber hoses when installing them in a chainsaw. I like to replace the impulse line when I pull the cylinder off and put a little 1184 on the impulse nipple before I put the impulse line on the nipple. This keeps it from ever becoming disconnected. Then I feed it under the intake boot and start it into its hole in the rear wall. Once the end gets inthe hole I grab it with my hemostats and pull it until it pops into position. Soap on the end of the hose helps it come through the rear wall. A lot of cussing usually accompanies the installation of an impulse line.

    Positioning your flashlight on the nipple of the impulse line the way you did is what made the replacement successful for me.Your friendly demeanor cancelled any frustration at times with this assignment.Thankyou Sir!

    ....good video that helped me replace the fuel and impulse line on an old Stihl 026 restoration project.....special thanks to the two commentators
    that suggested using a "guide" wire for the impulse line replacement....that helped a bunch, and having two sizes of hemostats got the job done...
    thanks again for posting.... :)

    Mine would not start. But not stay running.
    Leaned that line is not a vent but the impulse line.
    So I remove the carb (again) and re-attached the line to the crankcase nipple.
    I happened to have a pair of forceps also and did it like you did. Took all of 15 seconds.
    Ensured the line was properly seated in the body hole behind the carb and re-assembled everything.
    It starts and purrs like a kitten now.
    I use a tiny dab of dielectric grease on the hoses which does not affect rubber. We use it a lot on offroad motocycles.
    Now the crankcase pressure pulses can pulsate the fuel pump diaphragm in the carb and pump fuel.👍

    Thanks, this video really helped me to replace the impulse line. Before I saw this video I was afraid to take the old line off because it looked impossible to get back on without removing the flywheel. One thing I did a little different was use wire from a coat hanger to guide the impulse line by putting the wire inside the impulse line. Then from the flywheel side I was able to use long skinny needle nose pliers to put the line on the nipple.

    Right you are; forceps; great for removing and replacing fuel and impulse lines and extracting fish hooks from the catch of the day; lol; thanks for a great informative video; I think you just solved my problem. I usually attach the linkage to the carb before I slide the carb in, but your way is fine too. You can stuff a screwdriver down its gullet to hold the throttle arm down to re hook the linkage. You can take the linkage off the carb without removing the handle top but you gotta be sneaky and have a good light.

    Easier to put the fuel line on the filter first, then apply a little soapy solution for lube and use a flexible wire to fish the line up from the tank while seting the filter grommet as well. Nice video 💯

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 ปีที่แล้ว

    The impulse line on a ms 260 plugs into a nipple on the crankcase, unlike most Stihl saws that plug into a nipple on the cylinder. I just replaced one on my ms 260 Pro that I am restoring from a standard ms 260. It is easy to do if the cylinder is not installed. I replaced the standard ms 260 piston with the bigger bore 44.7 mm piston with a deco valve, part of the Pro upgrade. I used a brand new Stihl Intake boot and impulse line out of an abundance of caution. The old ones were 23 years old and time for replacement. I will also be upgrading the oil pump, worm gear and sprocket, also, to bring them up to Pro standards. Cleaning up the saw has been the most difficult part of the restoration. It was filthy, but compressed air, purple power and elbow grease will work wonders. What kicked my ass was getting the new intake boot on the cylinder. It was a very tight fit.

    Good video, thanks. Have you ever heard of anyone fitting a primer bulb to the 026? I've bad a number of different Stihl chainsaws, 4 brush cutters and a hedgetrimmer over the years, but the 026 has been the hardest to start from cold by far. 10-20 pulls on full choke to get the fuel into the system. I found a way to get by - I dribble some fuel onto the air filter and it starts first pull, but I'd love to drill a hole in the plastic case somewhere and add a primer bulb.

    If you put the filter on the line first you can pull it through from the tank. It goes very easily that way. No tools needed.

      steve eber Will the filter fit through the hole in the tank by the carburetor?

    • @Rottidog68
      @Rottidog68 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markproulx1472 No, I believe he meant you attach the filter & fish it through from the tank side 1st. On my MS 270 the fuel line only goes in from the outside, The rubber/nitrile tube has a larger flange for the outside of the tank. It can only be routed from outside in, unfortunately.
      On the throttle linkage, I'd attach it to the carb before reinstalling the carb. Well, see if doesn't get in the way with the impulse line etc while reinstalling the carb on my MS 270. May be slightly different in there from a MS 260. Also, CAREFULLY removing the black part of the handle so the trigger & safety don't go flopping around, removing the throttle linkage bar & re-attaching the black handle part so the trigger etc is inside & held in-place with the black cover & bolt, should save any issues of trigger, safety lever alignment.

I replaced my fuel line and filter a while ago, it wasn't to hard, but after watching you struggle some, i've decided i struggled 3 times as much as you! You did make look easy. I was wondering why you didn't rebuild/repair the carb while it was out?

    instead of using a screw driver to seat the grommet on the impulse and fuel lines, try using a long deepwell socket to push them into the case. never nothing sharp that could cut the hoses. a small crow foot on an extension might work better for the fuel line but your 5/16" socket will work fine on the impulse line

    • @Rottidog68
      @Rottidog68 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a use for the once in a blue moon crowfoot wrench.

  • @johnclarke6647

    Impulse line - I connect it to the nipple on the cylinder and direct it around to the hole in the rear wall and push it in the hole. Mi then gab the end with my hemostats and pull it until it snaps through the hole. I put a littleWD40 on the impulse line before I pull it through. I also put a little 1184 on the nipple in the cylinder and in the hole in the impulse line. This makes sure it will not disconnect from the cylinder nipple.

  • @johnclarke6647

    Use a 50% mixture of Dawn and water to help rubber parts get into their allotted locations. I have a spraybottle of soapy water that I use. I do not use oil because it will deteriorate rubber. Soapy water will not hurt rubber. It really helps pulling an intake boot through the rear wall on a Stihl saw and getting the fuel line grommet to seat in the tank.

    • @jimhallstrom3754
      @jimhallstrom3754 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I broke my new fuel filter line trying to get that seated! I will use dawn and ordered a new fuel line and pulse line. Stihl sent me a longer fuel filter line which hits my air cleaner. I will get them in if I don't have a blow up!!

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 ปีที่แล้ว

    The impulse line on the 260 plugs into the case and not the cylinder, like most Stihl saws. I think it is easier to replace than most other Stihl saws, just go in from the top, grab it, and push it on the nipple on the case.

    Thanks for a great video. Does my Stihl 021 from the 90s have an impulse line ? The fuel tank has a vent tube on it. I've adjusted the low and high screws and idle speed. The saw runs great for 3-5 minutes of cutting then it will bog and die when you go from idle to full throttle.

      Where are you spraying the easy start? If you're spraying it into the carburetor, it should definitely pap a few times at least. That being said, I don't recommend using starting fluid on two stroke engines because there's no oil in it. I would definitely replace the fuel and impulse lines and also replace the fuel filter. If you sucked up some junk from the tank, when it ran out, it will get into the fuel line and carburetor. If you replaced the carburetor and not the fuel line and filter, you may have sucked more crud out of the existing fuel line and filter and plugged up the new carburetor as well.
      Hope this helps!
      Gary

    I put it on the nipple, first, and then feed it under the boot and from the other side feed the snout of the hose into its hole. Once I get the nose in the hole I grab the end of the hose with my hemostats and pull it into the hole. I spray the hose with my pressing liquid to help it to get through the hole and seated. I also put a little 1284 on the nipple an in the first bit of the hose to make sure it stays connected. I have had them work loose in the past.

Hear you speaking but cannot see what you are doing with impulse line, linkage etc. My suggestion just focus on the parts to get connected with some close ups, and cut the video to about half the time. Please take this as constructive criticism thank you.

    NEED HELP... So i was using my ctihl 026 cut about 3 trees down, all of a sudden it ran out of gas, so i refilled it and it wont start, figured there is an air bubble in the line so i put gas in the carburator and it start right up, until the gas in the carb was out, then no start again, figured it would be the fuel filter, being old and all, so i replaced that, also the fuel line, and the spark plug, using this video to do so, ty btw... figured it would fire right up no problem after i was done, and nothing, can anyone help? still fires when i put gas in the carb, but nothing else... making me think its just not getting the fuel to the carb... ANY HELP? I MISS MY CHAINSAW! PLEASE ANYTHING

      Doug Bergeron sounds like something got sucked up into the carburetor. I've seen old fuel lines start to disintegrate internally and little black pieces will plug up the carb. I would definitely start with a carb rebuild.

      Rebuild? Or replace? I just want my chainsaw back haha! So your saying where the fuel is taken from the fuel line there might be something stuck? Shall i just clean it out or buy a new carb? I dont mind doing either, but ive had this saw for over 10 years and never once has it done me wrong, i love it haha

      Myself, I rebuild them, the kits are cheap on eBay. Make sure you get a genuine kit. I believe all of the 026's had Walbro's, but check the carb to be sure. If you want to replace it, I would definately get one from the Stihl dealer, not ebay. Just keep in mind that you are troubleshooting and while it is probably the carb, it still may not be, that's why I like to rebuild them, the kits are usually less than $10. The other thing to check would be the impulse line, if you haven't replaced it. The carb gets pulses of pressure and vaccum from the crankcase through the impulse line and that is what pumps the fuel into the carb. If theres an issue there, you would have the same symptoms.

    Do you want a real ass kicker? Try working on an 029. A 260 is a piece of cake compared to an 029.😩

      I have an 038 AV and the hole where the impulse line is located is pugged and the carburetor does not show a location for inserting the pulse line like in the video. I assume that there is no impulse line in the 038 AV. How did Stihl eliminate this?
