- Dan gives you a sneak peak into what he does for a day job… with the help of an amazing musician!
Welcome to the show, Dan here, hello! Today is a very different kind of show - it's me doing a sort of behind-the-scenes of part of my main working life at TheGigRig… which just so happens to be putting rigs together for professional players.
I've known Dave Kilminster now for a long, long time. For much of the past two decades he has been playing guitar for British rock icon, Roger Waters, who still tours the world playing giant arenas and the like with all the passion and theatre that originated in his Pink Floyd days.
While doing the board for Dave, I thought it would be a good opportunity to have a chat with him about what life is like in one of rock's greatest gigs.
Huge thanks to Dave for having me along!
ps. 'Jake' in this video is Jake Willcock who works with us at TheGigRig.

Dave: "I'm a little nervous tonight actually now"
Dan: "Why:
Dave: "Well you're in audience for a start "
Dan: "For crying out loud!"
That tickled me. Massive respect to two guys who work at their craft to such a high level, yet wear it lightly and are so generous with it.
In this case, I personally think that we’re talking about mutual respect, not “niceties”! They don’t need to being “nice” to each other, the two knows exactly who they are! 😂
I totally agreed with you, @spharr…
Another great and well deserved feather in Dan's hat.
My introduction to Dave was in a Guitarist Magazine article from 1998 top 10 80s Shredders and have been following him ever since, still have the copy of the mag. Love Dave K
Dave always seems like the nicest guy, and such a great guitar player.
A decade ago I kinda resented him playing the guitar parts. Over time, I've learned to really appreciate the great job Mr Kilminster has done filling those massive shoes, while elevating to bring his own taste and class to the parts and solos. Now I'm grateful, as a PF fan.
He seems like a really nice man. This was so fun to watch. The tones were pretty epic and those tele/strats he has sound and look amazing. Dan, how awesome for you to have this connection and help put together something that is so integral to this tour. Well done. Have a great weekend guys.
He is. I remember being at ACM with both him and Guthrie teaching there and they were wonderful guys and very humble and very funny.
I know he’s not _the_ Dave, but hearing him rip the Time solo still sent shivers down the spine
I’m so with you on that. One of my fovouritist solos of all time, and the delay effect on it is just the best. Sounded absolutely killer here
Very cool interview. He seems very grounded and down to earth about the attitude required to play such a huge gig. I'm sure the intimidation of playing in front of 50,000 people as well as cameras and everything else going on would be enormous. I loved his outlook and honesty.
I've seen Dave with Waters on the Wall tour in 2012 and this latest tour last year, and Dave has nothing to worry about! The man can play and inject plenty of soul and feel into those classic songs
I went to see him play with Roger Waters last year, and his sound was truly superb! I was sitting there thinking about how they managed to get such a perfect sound out of the speakers and sounding so excellent in that arena. It was clear and loud!
Absolutely awesome show!
Inspiring, two people with the deepest commitment to their craft. Favorite quote: "I looked down and my guitar was covered in blood, I was trying to feel something." Thanks Dan....may your day be filled with feeling. ❤
He's a MONSTER
Stood 2 feet from him when he played for his friend Heather Findlay in a small club in York a few years ago. An absolute top notch player.
Great guitarist, and just watching two guys talking about their love for guitars and gear is amazing!
I have seen Dave K. 3 times now with Roger Waters. THe Wall, Us And Them and Not a DRILL. His playing and tone has always been incredible. Dan's rig building makes it sound so much like the original but different. In a good way. His guitar just cuts though everything much like Gilmour's. I hope to catch Dave K playing on his own or with other artists some day.
Dave's comment at 18:35 about playing clean to be heard is absolutely true! We all love cranking up the gain in the bedroom, but as soon as you reach gig volumes, that glorious sound just gets swallowed up in the mix.
I'm Italian and i saw Dave in the Brunetti stand years ago in Bologna when he was about to start the first Waters tour.I didn't know him but i realized immediatly he was a genius, i remeber , after talkin to this lovely man who were answering some question of a dude who didn't know anything about him, asking to Marco Brunetti "Who's he?" , he told me about Waters and the tour with a light in his eye ..and i started shaking
I first saw Kilminster at Hammersmith with Steven Wilson and he became my favourite guitarist at that moment. Still is. Head back. Lives and breathes the era I come from and there is no one else that can come close to that.
What a night! And what a guy ❤
Dan, you have a beautiful soul - Fantastic interview/insight to a great player playing a massive gig
Thank you kindly! 🤓🙏
What a nice super humble guy. Incredible
I’ve been waiting for this since I saw Dave touring with Roger in 2018 and saw his (obviously Dan built) board! So pumped for this!
Dave is so down to earth, he's the guitarist i'll always want to be.
Fabulous....thanks!
I could listen to this guy play and talk all day.
I got chills when he started playing Gilmour's licks! 💚🎸
Dan asks the questions that we as guitarists want to hear about. Great interview and I hope Dave and Roger make it back to NZ again one day!
I'm pretty sure Dave is done touring unfortunately
Edit: whoops, I realized you probably meant the other Dave, not Gilmour.
@@gdawgs101 Yep, meant to say Dave K but Dave G would be great too! I saw two shows in 2018 when Roger came to New Zealand for the Us + Them tour. I was blown away by Dave K's playing and how authentic it is to the original. He's able to replicate not only the parts that are in-tune/in-time, but also the parts that aren't! Sometimes the latter are just as important.
My fav pedal ever made, Hermida Zen Drive. That's a handsome looking board chaps. Mr Kilminster is going to be thrilled. Thanks for sharing. I have a Paoletti, it's made from wine casks, beautiful Guitar and it's a rare lefty. An anniversary present from my wife.
Absolutely AWESOME!! Thank you both.
Awesome. Well done Dan! Playing Pink Floyd songs is the reason for about half of most guitarists’ pedal collection I reckon
Gilmour was the guy that made it look so easy I thought I could do it. paused my warbly Pompeii beta tape, went into town & bought a black squier strat. Jokes on me.
I wish more videos like this! Also Mr. Kilminster is such a talented musician and has a cool vibe that i like!
Well done! Definitely one of my favorites from this series. 🎸
I do a similar job to Dave albeit on a much, much smaller scale - so I could happily spend hours listening to the two of you. So much valuable information - thanks Dan and Dave.
Wow!!! What a treat! Thank you lads!
Saw the wall concert in Auckland NZ some years ago. Dave blew my mind. Tone in spades. It was about as perfect as one could imagine. Glad I went. What a Stella show
Grew up with him (mags) and then through guitar school 20 years ago. Go DAVE! You rock!
He's got it surrounded. Such a lovely body of work to interpret/cover.
Dave is Another great Guitarist whose Magazine lessons taught me lots along time ago , it would be cool to see Phil Hilborne on the Show some time Phil was another great teacher from my Magazine days .
Dan thanks brings back memories of see PF in 75 when they would crash the plane behind the stage.
Yes! Love Dave! Great guy, and what a player!!
Caught the Roger Waters show in Bologna back in April and Dave's playing was incredible. What an incredibly tight band, and so much energy and passion. Flawless. (And a flawless pedalboard, too -- nice one, Dan!)
What a great guy and amazing guitarist. Thanks Dan.
Nice one! I´ll admit I used to not like Dave K before, he just seemed so different and it wasnt sitting right with me. But then I grew up lol. Such a lovely guy and a great guitarist, saw him in Prague earlier on this year and he and the whole band rocked!
Dave is such a cool person. An incredible guitarist too.
Lovely! Thanks Dave and Dan! Best, Daniel 🤙🏻
Awesome - I saw Dave on the second Toronto gig last summer and the sound and the playing was just stunning. Been waiting for this ever since. Happy day ❤
Really enjoyed that - great to see Dave on the show. Thank you Dan and thank you Dave. 😎
Absolutely nothing against Dave Kilminster. I am sure this is a great gig and and he is a stellar player. nothing but absolute respect to people who make their living designing, manufacturing, selling, setting up and playing music and gear. Personally, I could never enjoy seeing a band playing Pink Floyd songs without David Gilmour’s vocals and playing and Rick Wright’s (RIP) and Nick Mason’s playing. To all those who can, enjoy! All four band members were irreplaceable, but at a minimum David Gilmour’s participation is a must for me.
Oh Dan what a wonderful video!! And with such an approachable humble and talented guitarist. Thanks.
If you have never seen Roger Waters and the guys. Highly recommend it. Awesome musicians and what a show.
What a fantastic behind the scenes video, and what a superb guitarist Dave is. Huge thanks Dave and Dan for this.
Wow! Amazing sounds. Great interview / discussion, relaxed and just again amazing how skillful guitarist Mr Kilmister is.
So many instant Pink tones ! great player and killer board of course.!
Awesome show. I like to see that most musicians are lovely people and can get nervous like the rest of us. Thanks for showing us this.
Great video. Loved Dave's humility
I saw him on the previous tour they did with Roger and it was an incredible show. Super great guitarist!
You always get the nicest people on here. Must just attract them.
Awesome Dan. Cheers.
What a wonderful player! He's earned that spot. Great guy too.
As an huge Floyd fan - Highly enjoyable episode !! One more pint and I'm off to bed because its new guitar day tomorrow morning - early morning drive 2 1/2 hours west, on a guitar safari, to go get a dream guitar - Rickenbacker 330 - Slainte Gents!
Awesome. Dave is such a cool dude.
He is such a great guitarist! Really cool to have this behind the scenes look! Must be quite a trip to be part of such a huge operation.
I really really enjoy this type of content! More of this!
Really enjoyed this one. What a player Dave is and a lovely guy. Rig sounded superb! Great watch 😃
Nice sounds. Thanks, boys.
As Dan’s friend says. ‘Everything I’d want in a guitarist’.
That was great!! Best of luck to you both!
What a cool guy. Great show!
Saw Dave play with Rogers Waters in Manchester earlier this year - sounded absolutely awesome!!!! 👏👏👏
What a huge treat; I love this guy; “no mate, you’re playing that, I’m going home....” what a legend.
man you're everywhere!
Freaking Awesome! Great Vid Daniel!!!
Wonderful DK is so humble about his abilities and gigs
Dan is the man!!
Simon McBride and David Kilminster back to back? Monster players, very impressive!
Dave is an amazing player!! Love your sound
Utterly epic
Great build and great interview! Cheers Dan and Dave!!

Brilliant insight into Dave Kilminster and his gear, well done guys 😊👍
Finally... Doyle Bramhall the 28'th. Finally took his Ego somewhere else. Listen to Chaley Sexton. On, "Under the wishing tree. FN. Masterpiece.
Seen this so many times but its always good
Great interview Dan, hellova gig man! Diolch
Seems like a very chill guy, perfect for some Floyd songs haha. Epic tones, love seeing these rig rundowns and interviews.
Really beautiful video! Being a Gilmour’s fan, I’ve never thought someone else like Kilminster could ever take his place. And I know it sounds weird but…after seeing Waters live in Rome and take a look to his work during this years, I got to say that Kilminster fits very well David’s habits, trying to being respectful with the originals but even carrying something personal every time. And, being also proudly Italian, knows that he’s playing Brunetti and Paoletti it likes me very much. Last (but not least), Kilminster’s way to approach to the music is the same approach of mine and I had the same experience, in my simple guitarist’s life: I still play by ear and reading a single note it tooks me 39 seconds each note!😂 I really love his way to “live” the music he plays, even if it’s not his usual background. Hats off to him and (of course) Dan’s work, still perfect and focused! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
me too believe he's the perfect match, his bendings and timings are closer to David Gilmour than any other cover band's guitarists
This was great. Playing the Time solo was a nice little surprise for a min there
Dave is a really incredible guitarist with THE best tone!
Thank you, I didn't think I was that well known.
@@davemabee5798Well... He Stayed with David Spade. & Spade is litterly obsessed W/R&R... I lent him an Unreal guitar. But he - Actually thinks he could never better Sandler. (( What ? )) he can. BARLEY l
Play, "70's Disco chords. Sooo... He lived 98% of his life W/Dave. Then all of a sudden, Immediately W/ Pink Floyd. B
Hey, I know it's an easy mistake to make but it looks like he's actually using a Dunlop Band of Gypsys Mini Fuzz Face FFM6. The white knobs are the giveaway. The FFM2 has black knobs. Not germanium as far as I'm aware or even really a Fuzz Face circuit. Roger Mayer put an octavia circuit without the octave in a Fuzz Face enclosure with white knobs which is what Hendrix used during the BOG Fillmore East performances and that's what Dunlop used as the template for the fuzz on his board.
Great Fun
Love it! I’ve always been a Pink Floyd fan influenced by Gilmour. He nailed the sounds and playing.
Been a fan of Daves since back in the 90's, awesome player and lovely guy. I forgot him and Guthrie were besties :)
This is perfect just a great happy watch. :-)
Would love to see more content in how these big pros prepare for performing and securing confidence in gear hitting the cues
Cool video.
I saw David with Roger Waters and Steven Wilson live multiple times. Fantastic guitar player.
Great to see the ThorpyFX Deep Oggin and Camouflange on here. THE best modulation pedals!!
thank fuzz it's friday!
Brunetti! Italian pride ❤
Apsolutno brutalno!
Great video
"no, you're doing that. I'm going out!" 😂😂
Ps. The little candy on the pick holder :)
