I think it is worse than that. Corporate media rarely gives anti-war, anti-imperialism, anti-capitalist voices any room on corporate media. So we are all left with the impression that the topics and framing that corporate media makes room for are the only views that are correct. These media outlets have their own ideology and bias (and other corporate sponsors that are paying their bills). It is reflected in the type of discourse they allow on air. They used to allow a lot more people like Roger Waters speak their minds to their audiences. They are too afraid of losing advertisers nowadays.

It's a complex world, and this is a complex issue (Russia v. Ukraine) as Waters said, with a past history to add in to the equation. The USA is going through a similar issue, with SOME Americans becoming uncomfortable with the increasing levels of minorities, thus turning the US into a true (or truer) melting pot. There was no wiping the floor, the way interviews work is that it gives the person being interviewed a platform to discuss their points and views. A good interviewer may bring up current counterpoints at times and will steer the interview, but they are not there to debate, for that you'd go to a structured debate rather than an interview.

Last I checked those dinguses don’t even believe there IS a war going on in Ukraine, those of us that actually researched a variety of sources instead of skimming a CNN article know that there is indeed a war going on, just that it’s been an escalation of several conflicts since at least 2014, with breaches of the Minsk agreements on both sides, after 3300+ civilians were killed during the years of shelling that the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. That figure is from UNICEF btw, not a Kremlin-ran media outlet. The point roger and I believe the other commenters are trying to convey is that the situation is not a matter of black and white/good vs evil as the CNN presenter implies, because he knows his salary relies on his ability to obfuscate the truth like the partisan hack he is.

The problem nowadays is people are living in different realities becoz of what they are shown on social medias and often biased journalism (Yes, I meant CNN, Fox News, etc). As a Chinese Canadian living in Asia, I have to agree with Roger. Americans need to read and watch more news from our side of the world. To characterise this kind of discussion as a sincere moral dialectic is mistake. Smerconish, like every one of his corporate media peers, is not exercising a carefully considered and genuinely held personal viewpoint, rather he's obfuscating, misleading and propagandising, because that's what he's paid for. Still I suppose it is a positive thing that, in this age of dissident censorship, CNN is platforming voices like Waters at all (even if they did pull the tired old microphone adjustment trick that's so often used when a speaker gets into their flow.) Though a clear-eyed cynic might come away from this interview wondering if the "powers that be" aren't trying to reverse the public opinion they've worked so hard to cultivate in recent months as they look to construct an off-ramp from the US's disastrous and untenable Ukranian misadventure.

I live in the US and it is hard to see outside that bubble, and I think it is that way for most wherever they live because legacy (corporate or other status quo controllers) media and leaders get to control the narrative. But I have faith in my instincts and humanity at large when I hear people speak openly and honestly. We are all manipulated, we are all told partial truths at best. We are all brothers and sisters and by nature and want to better our lives for ourselves and each other too. Why would we ever want to do otherwise? We all have to look outside the constraints and divisions put on us by the status quo who profit from the past inequalities and injustices. I am not the enemy of any of my fellow human beings, not intentionally at least. I know what is right and wrong before any institution needs to tell me. Best of luck to you in Ecuador my friend, and I will try for the best here as well! :) The people of the world need to understand the unprecedented level of manipulation going on made possible by technology, and see through to the underlying real motives dividing us, which ultimately hurt us all.

He is a musician. He is great and acknowledged. Nevertheless I write music too, and one feedback I got from a highly respected poet was that I on occasion was just listing things. OK, it is easier, not such a heavy creative process. My guess is that Rogers has fallen for it too. Even though he is great, he is still human, and I do not think he is that deeply into Russian culture, to be able to judge this. We are a peace-generation, and of course, some see everything through the lense of Western fault. In this situation I see that the West is actually holding back a lot. The Russians also claim that they could do a lot worse. Keeping sane as an artist, not just showing off opinions is nevertheless a challenge these times. What is happening is horrifying, but the solution is not just to hand Ukraine over to the wild bear.

  • @paullangton-rogers2390
    @paullangton-rogers2390 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Whilst I agree with much of Roger's politican reasoning and the gist of his argument, he is slightly naive on human rights and China. And I'd put to him the term 'passive aggression' which is something China has perfected. He said China has never invaded any country or taken part in any major conflicts: Tibet? Vietnam? Korea? China took over Tibet, an entire nation. Tibet didn't resist and not a single bullet was fired, but they took over a country by threat of force and began replacing its culture none the less. China was instrumental in the Korean war and has backed North Korea (one of the most evil regimes on earth that has zero human rights) to this day. Vietnam, China backed the Communists and fought a proxy war against the US along with USSR. China has an appalling human rights record in its own country. Millions died during the time of Chairman Mao. More recently, China has attacked its own Muslim community and puts thousands and thousands in prison camps or re-education camps to de-Islamify them. China promised to respect the independence and democracy of Hong Kong during the 1998-1999 hand-over from Britain, but has slowly erroded the rights of Hong Kong Chinese and even attacks or imprisons them when they protest so they now hold up blank sheets of paper, same as people do in mainland China. Taiwan is a democracy that wishes to be self-governed independent of China, but China is saying is must be re-unified with China by choice or by force. A basic fundamental human right is the right to self-determination of a people. The right to choose and elect a government. China doesn't hold to that principle. It's one of the countries that hasn't signed the Human Rights Charter.
But all that said, even my own country the UK is far from perfect on human rights, despite being a founding signature to the UNHR Charter. People are imprisoned here for political incorrectness, wrong thinking or expression. Freedom of speech is restricted. Freedom of political association is restricted. Freedom of assembly and the right to protest is restricted. Just to different levels, but not unlike China in many ways if you go in a direction the government doesn't like.
Roger is correct about the Russian Ukraine situation. Most people have absolutely no idea how, why or when this conflict started and the long diplomatic and legal struggle Russia went through before it got to the stage of Putin using full Russian military intervention on Ukraine. And I don't even think he even expected it to be a war. He expected no resistance and the government to fall quite quickly just by a show of overwhelming Russian force. His intelligence and calculations were flawed and things quickly spiralled out of control. Suddenly the Western world has turned on Russia and isolated it economically. Russia is now in a proxy-war with a US/Western NATO alliance basically, with Ukraine being used to fight a war on Russia for them. Ukraine is the battle-ground for a power struggle between the West and Russia, just as it was 170 years ago in the Crimean War.
The path towards Russia deciding to take military action on Ukraine against a government it considered hostile to Russian people and Russia itself started right back in 2008 as Roger said. With limited intervention in Dombas using militias to back Russian separatists who were being supressed and killed. Then it escalated from there.
The Minsk Agreements of 2014 and 2015 were a final diplomatic international attempt to resolve these issues between Ukraine and Russia, and the West brokered that and co-signed. In those agreements, Ukraine conceded that Crimea was part of the Russian Federation, respected the referendum of the majority ethnic Russian population to be identified as Russian nationals, and it addressed the Russian separatist problems in the three Dombas regions, that were being socially, politically marginalised and attacked by the Ukranian government. Both sides, Russia and Ukraine have breached the Minsk Agreements, but Ukraine more so in stating Crimea is part of Ukraine and they intend to take it by force, when they conceded it as Russian Federation territory in an international agreement and agreed to respect the referendum outcome. Crimea has been part of Russia for 199 years, Ukraine has absolutely no legal basis to claim Crimea is part of Ukraine. To Russia, that's a declaration of war on Russia itself.
So why are people perplexed that Russia has such an anti-Western position and decided it had no option left but to take military action against Ukraine, a government that violated two international agreements, had become hostile towards ethnic Russian people and the Russian State itself? Russian tried to settle its issues with Ukraine by every diplomatic and legal way possible, and the West was part of that process, but is now arming Ukraine instead of saying, hold on, we had an agreement here, what went wrong, let's sit down and work this out...people talk about finding a peaceful resolution, there is one the Minsk Agreement II. If both sides just kept to their word and the international community kept to its word, the war could end. What Russia is asking for is not unreasonable.Yes it's gone too far and the Special Military Operation has gone completely out of control and nobody can excuse what Putin and Russia is doing, but they feel betrayed, ignored and supressed by the West who only follows the rule of law, and democracy when it suits their own interests...there's a very hypocritical double-standard going on by the West when it comes to Western democracy and interests, and Russia's.
When it's Russia's interests, nobody cares. There is also still a lot of corruption in Ukraine. Even the current President has dubious involvment with a Russian company, and Ukranian Oligarch billionaires (yes they exist, but no news reports on that!) with tens of millions of dollars held by him and others close to him, using off-shore companies in tax-havens that hold multi-million pound properties in the UK and Europe. That may shock some people, but it's true. Google it.
Everything isn't black and white, good guy, bad guy as the media presents it. They like to dumb-down things for the masses. Like Roger said, it's cause and effect. There's always a reason behind the effects, a history and a story. We're only seeing the effects and one side of the story. Why is the West keeping the war going in Ukraine and sending more and more arms? Why aren't they trying to make every effort to reach a diplomatic resolution with Russia? Why didn't this process start when the tanks were lined up before a single shot was fired? Why were France's efforts dismissed?
We hear 'Russia must be defeated, its military degraded' over and over. How do you think Russian's feel hearing that? Are they likely to trust or like the West? Like Roger said, how would the US feel, if China started building up a global military coalition around the world and put nukes and military bases with 100,000 troops on the Mexico border and around the world by US interests? Look what happened when the USSR put nuclear missiles on Cuba, we very nearly had a nuclear WWIII! And yet Russia is expected to tolerate Ukraine becoming a NATO possibly nuclear armed state with an antagonistic government on its border, and Finland with a 1,000km border being another US base and NATO country? And people are alarmed when Russia re-assets its nuclear deterrent position. It's called nuclear threats and blackmail. Yet there are nuclear bases all over Europe with missiles pointed at Russia and nuclear armed submarines around Russia. The US conducted several nuclear tests in the Indian ocean, nobody said a thing. Russia tests a nuclear missile everyone is critical.
If we want peace, we need to de-escalate tensions, not escalate them. Nearly everything the US and NATO does seems to esalate and create tensions. Everyone is an enemy or threat if they have a different style of government, but sadly the world isn't perfect and neither is the US itself.
Is arming Taiwan helping ease tensions with China? Or sending spy planes over China and doing training exrcises in the South China Sea and putting the US navy fleets there helping China-US relations? Constant negative news about China and absurd stories about them being the number one threat, intent on taking over the world and their military exceeding the US in a few years...China is preparing to invade Taiwan real soon, when China says the opposite..it has no intention or desire to invade Taiwan, it seeks peaceful re-unification but must show its strength, capability and willingness to defend itself also, just as the US does, only right on China's doorstep. China's military won't achieve even parity with the US military until 2050 at the current levels even if the US military doesn't expand further, according to China. China doesn't want to be a military super-power to rival the US and has no global ambitions to challenge NATO. It just wants to be able to defend itself against a possible US/Western attack and protect its regional interests and space. That's China's official stated position, but that's not what's reported.
The world isn't perfect and sadly not all countries respect human rights or the rule of international law fully. However using aggression to solve that won't make it better or the world safer. That's a lesson we've learned over and over. Look at the state of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and many other countries now after decades of US-led regime changes. How many major regime changes has Russia been involved in by comparison post-USSR, or China? Who is the main global aggressor from the Russian, Chinese, India and North Korea prospective? Perhaps that's why they feel threatened, maybe they'll be next to be invaded!
"if you want to understand the present situation, then look at past events. If you want to consider future outcomes, consider the present actions." - Buddhist wisdom.
