a truly magnificent bowl! I like the rim with it's own concavity to it.... another fine piece that anyone would be glad to have on their table... Sorry your batteries ran out at the end, but at least they lasted long enough to get all the main parts. ah, was wondering how the bowl was secured when the interior was being hogged out and the gilding applied. i'm impressed that mechanical hold was enough to secure such a large piece. Very neat effect with the pattern, painting and gilding!
Thanks for the comment. The recess like that is actually very strong indeed. I chose not to use a tenon as I have no method of turning it off at the end and keeping the nice spiralling on the bottom.
Lovely bowl Martin. I know what you mean about the transition but it works OK. Not sure on the width of the coves either side of the belt but it certainly is a lovely piece. I adore the gradiated brown on the bottom.

I can easily believe you did a ton of sanding. Your clothes look like you just came in from a desert sand storm. ;-) Even with a slow speed on the lathe I can't believe you wear no face shield...brave?
Hi Gil. Thanks - generally, I'll wear a faceshield for really hair pieces like natural edges and the piece I'm turning for next week's project. Or, a piece I'm not confident is solid. Otherwise, I'm comfortable in safety glasses only. Likewise, when I demonstrate at clubs, safety glasses are worn rather than full shields, save for the exceptions given above. Teaching in the shop though, beginners are required to wear full shields. Sanding this piece was quite funny - did feel like I'd come in from the sand, yeah. Lol. All the best, Martin

Hi Eric. Thanks for the comment. Of course a mask when sanding. I don't show it often as it is the woodturning equivalent of watching paint dry. Plus, as discussed in a much earlier video, I can't talk and be heard at the same time with a mask on. The new workshop has a huge extactor system. Check out the Black Dog Workshop channel for all the development videos. I will do a workshop tour at some point soonish though.
hi Martin just wondering if you put on Hampshire sheen original to finish a piece and you decided you wanted a higher gloss could you just go over it with Hampshire sheen high gloss or would you have to sand down the original? thanks

Man you Brits and Scots get some nice looking sycamore. The sycamore I see here in the states is rather anemic, grainy, knotty, not nice at all. I'm completing a sycamore platter, I'm glad the whole piece is colored.
Hi Blue Star. Yeah, the sycamore over here is lovely - but I would love to try out some of your maple! Sometimes I really like the knotty grain and stuff adds a lot to the overall aesthetics of a piece, but can be a pig to turn! All the best, Martin
Hi Martin, Why do you have to use your hand to start the bowl on the lathe? Is it because the lathe doesn't have enough torque at low speed to get it started? We enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.
Hi there, MaineWolverine. Thanks for the comment. There is soooo much torque in the motor that a hand start isn't actually required at all. But with a piece this big, I thought, to keep the stresses down on the motor that a little hand start would be good. Also, with another large piece I did (off camera), when sanding in reverse, the torque in the motor and the inertia of the piece actually unscrewed the chuck, even at 500 rpm!

I am just getting into texturing and gilding, have you used rub & buff on your bowls?
I have in the past and not liked them, so I developed the Hampshire Sheen Embellishing Waxes.
