I'm glad that Laura made it in from The Evil Within and not The Keeper. I usually see The Keeper on these types of lists instead. The Keeper is definitely unnerving, but I always found Laura to be far scarier.

The fast zombies from Half Life 2 were the monsters that disturbed me the most. Their speed and the sounds they make...Climbing to the top of a building to escape them only to see the pipes along the walls rattling, announcing their rapid ascend to your location...being isolated in a dark car park with only your flashlight as you can hear them scattering around in the shadows before rushing into your face from all directions. Was glad I beat Episodes 1 and 2 because I probably won't be doing that again after that experience. Masterpiece in horror.
So happy to see the haunted mansion game get some recognition, I loved that game as a kid. The introduction cutscene for the banshees was one of the first jumpscares I experienced as a kid
Of course, compared to others that are usually screaming, trying to intimidate and jumping/running at you. Regenerator is just… a deformed corpse with asmatic breathing, walking slowly toward you with durability we have never seen from previous zombie encounters. That gives true horror to me.
The reveal of the Flood in the first Halo game is still some of the best game design/storytelling ever. I remember playing it when it was new and with no knowledge of the plot. You get like five hours in battling the covenant, you're sure you know what's up and who the enemy is, then BOOM, zombie apocalypse out of nowhere and you need to get the eff out of that room NOW
The head crab ghouls in Ravenholm from Half Life 2 were scary. The spider in Limbo. A lot of enemies from the Dark Souls franchise! The Beserker from Gears of War.
The basilisks from the Dark Souls trilogy are the scariest monsters in gaming. Not because they have terrifying design, but because when you see the curse meter start ticking up there isn't anything more heart pounding, especially in the first game where getting cursed cut your maximum health in half.

I would add the Winter Lanterns from Bloodborne, they gave me panic attacks until I figured out how to deal with them but they're still terrifying to this day (just their singing creeps me out)

I liked this list of scary monsters in video games! I've watched a livestream of someone playing "Alien: Isolation"! I knew a xenomorph would be on this list! I've played "Super Mario 64" on someone's Nintendo DS, when I was little and never even went underwater in the game.
My ideas in no particular order are: 1. The Baby from RE 7(for being scary and disgusting) 2. The headcrab zombies in Half Life 3. The Wendigo in the Quarry 4. The face in The Maze
The Boogeyman from Kings Quest VII: The Princeless Bride always terrified me when I was a kid. There was always that fear that he could always pop out at any moment and kill you.
F.e.a.r and doom 3 got me pretty good as a teen, but resident evil 1, and that over the shoulder zombie stare hit me real hard at 12 especially since my dad came rushing in growling and I was alone in the dark lol

Imo nothing beats Resident Evil Nemesis. Nemesis should be number 1 on any list. Not only was Nemesis a manace, but it was the first time something followed you like that in a video game...Busting through doors. When I was a kid I'd pause the game and collect myself 😂. Those hunters from Resident Evil Code Veronica weren't no joke either...I remember when they got released and showed them coming after you 😲.
Honestly Village was an amazing game, especially the giant fetus part MAN I've never been so horrified in my life. Funny how I actually have a kid now haha

The thing 2002 that is a deep cut and a horrifying one at that. That level where you think everything is clear and then the 2 hulk ones burst in through the door. It was a disturbing experience your team mates which showcased amazing Ai could get infected and turn at anytime. They also would go crazy and just shoot at you or just commit suicide right in front of you. What a gem.
An interesting fact: The Flood from Halo was created made from the remains of the Precursors, a lovecraftian-like alien race are more advanced and famous ancient than even the Forerunners.
I hated the teacher or the doctor's patients from LN2 WAYYY more. The way the Janitor just snatches you to bring you back into your cage whereas the teacher straight up chases you with her head to devour you on the spot. And I hated how the patients looked with parts of their bodies being replaced by metal and doll parts and also the way they moved
Kinda hoped the redeads from Zelda made it on here. They were super dark and scary back when they debuted on Ocarina of Time and the fact that they let out that nightmare fuel scream and freeze you in place puts you in pure panic mode

Satisfactory Stingers. They had an entire setting made into the game to make them less scary. No one told me there were fast giant spiders in factory game. So it’s twice as scary the first time a pack of them jump you while you’re blissfully unaware. And the big ones are unrelenting jump scare nightmare fuel.

It's a wild theory for sure, but it's one that's supported by evidence within the gameplay and you can see why it's such a strong point. The Endermen aren't scary, not really, but when you consider the theory possible, they become disturbing, and ultimately tragic. Minecraft is a kid-friendly game that gets creepier the deeper you get into it, and the Endermen are proof of that..
I'd put space beasts from space beast terror fright. They are like zerglings but as a fps pov so they looks very horrifying. They one shot you and can run on walls and roof if they want. They can also hide in the mucus of the map to surprise you. Also your sonar and pov shakes at each heartbeat the more they are close to you because the marines you play is scared or shaked do to the sonar. Once you are dead, you'll see a massive mob of space beasts eating you and reap you appart from fps pov. This ennemies are the scariest foes I have never seen
House Beneviento was straight up terrifying. I only wish that section was less scripted and more dynamic because what we have now is just not the best for repeated playthroughs. Fantastic game though.
