Snake Eyes was never meant to have a movie like this anyway. The idea of the original toy and his character is that you never knew who he was, he was supposed to be anonymous so that we could be anyone, he could even be you. The one thing that made the character special is now thrown out the window. Hate to be that guy but I knew that it was going to flop. A movie made by hacks in suits who have never picked up a GI Joe action figure or even watched one episode to understand why it was special to a generation.
Would have worked if they just changed a few thing honestly Imagine if snake eyes made the guy roll the dice for his life and the guy rolls of one that gets him to live
If anything, the only few things you KNOW about him are completely ignored, namely that he's a foreigner in a ninja clan and that he made a VOW OF SILENCE....

Imagine making a Snake Eyes movie and ignoring the 20 odd years of lore about who Snake Eyes really is and why he is who he is and pissing off half of your fan base before the movie ever comes out.
Don't have to imagine it. That is what actually happened. I need to find the youtube comments I left on the trailer release videos. Pretty sure those of us that owned the original comics in the 80's said this was where this was going.
the only thing they got right was storm shadow he never was a bad guy even when hes in cobra he is a spy hes only working for them to find his uncle/father figure's killer in the lore deep down he knows his best friend (brother) snake eyes would neverr kill the hard master. there clan became his family .
srick 773 • MCU movies do that all the time the Venom movie and the Deadpool movie did that. Yet I hardly ever hear any of you rubes complain about it. Seems like complaints only fly into your brains when the ethnicity of a Caucasian character has been changed. Now Imagine that.
I mean to put everything aside, they simply ruined and failed to portray this really iconic character. They reimagined him in the worst way possible. If you can't make a good movie, you should at least stay true to the characters.
Sounds like D&D when they became the sole writers for the end of Game of Thrones… Those two were at the helm for years, but the moment they were given free reign they failed to understand what made characters lovable and enthralling, and ended up subverting (ruining) almost every story line. Jon Snow is Azura Hai foreshadowing? Nope, nevermind changed our minds. Arya faceless man training? Forgotten, doesn’t use any faces or techniques after Frey death. Jamie making a full arc and being the actual little brother to kill Cersi? Nope, he’s still a douche and gets crushed by rocks. Dany grappling with the reality of war, that she has to hurt innocent people despite not wanting to? Nope, she snaps and kills women and children with zero remorse. Some people just don’t have the vision to carry out beloved characters like this.
@@brainderp808 Yes, he shouldn't talk at all, he can't talk. His face is a nightmare of mangled/burnt flesh and that's why he wears a mask. The reason people like Snake Eyes is because he's a silent badass, not some guy with a sword.
@@mememan2011 It's shown like that in the G.I Joe movie but its not real. He got caught in a fire accident where he got third degree burns and the accident also effected his vocal cord. Let's see Snake Eyes is a disfigured mute who was originally Caucasian and found peace living with his brother in Asia Storm Shadow who's actually the better ninja after all he's been doing it his whole life. He's seemingly becomes a bad guy and we find out later that he was framed and Snake Eyes never stopped believing in him. Snake Eyes greatest characteristic is loyalty and Hope and self-sacrifice. Who essentially abandoned his culture and became Asian that used to be America. Okay in this movie we have the reverse a guy who's Asian who became an American. Who becomes disillusioned. Who talks all the freaking time. And is a pretty boy. What the hell did he have to do with snake eyes?
A few corrections, Snake-Eyes only became a mute after the helicopter crash when G.I. Joe was being formed, it was Storm Shadow who was framed for the death of their master, Snake-Eyes never became a bad guy and he didn't abandoned his culture and became Asian that used to be America. You don't need to have a widely recognizable franchise to make a film popular. Just MAKE...THE FILM...GOOD. John Wick and The Raid don't come from pre-established franchises but made a killing with audiences. You create a new franchise by focusing on cool shit and executing them right.
Snake Eyes and Mortal Kombat suffered from very similar issues when it came to the actual film. They both touted the skill of the martial artists used for the fight choreography, yet both films utilized quick edits and shaky camera in EVERY fight scene.

Dont even get me started on Akiko, who completely distrusts him, is suspicious and really dislikes him... and he tells her one paragraph about his childhood and she is ready to risk everything for him lol
He punches her too and she's like '' I love himmmm ;(( have my babies '' teaching kids to be abusive. P.S just watched the whole video, he punched her twice!! XD Once at the duel they had and again when he's caught stealing the jewel.
I watched this movie 5 days ago with a friend. After we finished watching them, I thought it was like another mediocre action movie. But my friend was so upset and said "just watch the 2 previous movie and you will understand." I never know/watch/read any G.I Joe stories in my life, so yeah I just give it a try. Now i just finished with first 2 movie, and I'm very upset.
I literally left the movie rooting for Storm Shadow 😂. The whole time I was like “wow Snake Eyes is the WORST.” I thought maybe that was gonna be his arc, going from a terrible person who can’t see past his lust for revenge to one trying to live honorably as atonement for how he ruined that clans life who were nice to him (taking a vow of silence to double down on it). But Snake Eyes gets no criticism and in fact gets REWARDED with a new suit for nearly killing them all and destroying everything. And the action scenes weren’t even that good to make it at all enjoyable lol. This movie really sucked and we should’ve expected as much by the director of RIPD and 2017 Beauty and the Beast being on this movie
I don't know if it was the acting, writing, directing, or a mixture of those things but they somehow made the coolest gi joe suck. That is a monumental feat in my opinion. I don't really know much about the actor who played him so I can't say too much on that front but the character just wasn't right.
Henry Golding was more effective as the villain in Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen. While more character-heavy (aka barely any action) amidst being a crime film so I get not everyone might feel that film either, at the very least the characters themselves felt more engaging in The Gentlemen while in Snake Eyes the script didn't care about how to handle its characters at all.
I thought snake eyes was a fish out of water character someone different who fights to be accepted by his peers his master dies and takes a vowel silence but idk maybe I was wrong

I went to go see this in cinemas on the day if release with my friends. There was 5 of us and not a single other person in the whole theatre. We spent about half an hour sitting through this before giving up on this movie and going on our phones. This movie holds a strong place in my heart as the worst movie I went to see in cinemas.

@@dagg497 Mate did you not read the comment? Have you seen the movie? Are you joking? If not let me educate you. It clearly states right in the comment that we tried watching the movie for about half an hour before realising the movie was unbearable to sit through any longer. There are so many things wrong with your unnecessary comment aside from the fact that the movie simply wasn't well made and even if it was you still have no right to comment and explain to me what I can and can't enjoy. People have different opinions on movies and you can't sit there and say my opion it was wrong (although according to reviews it is still a terrible movie but again that is just an opinion even if it is very widespread) so why feel the need to leave your comment? To conclude, Snake Eyes was the worst movie I have ever seen and I wouldn't watch it again if there was a gun to my head and yes I would play roblox on my phone over watching that dumpster fire any day of the week.
The impression I had was that the movie failed because people are reluctant to trust the direction of the franchise. Then their reluctance was justified when they learned that the writers of the movie had no idea what made the character popular in the first place. Snake Eyes was mysterious and his lack of definitive background meant that he could be molded to the directly to the reader's/viewer's personal "tastes" in their own mind. It is similar to the handling of Samus Aran in Other M. In this movie he is just another generic martial arts/action movie protagonist.
It flopped because no one cares about go Joe and especially no one cares about snake eyes. It's an old franchise with not many popular movies before it and it's a spin-off
He has a background, a very good one. It's a fish out if water story. He is a blond white dude, a Vietnam vet. After the war, he comes home, only to have his remaining family is killed, accident, I think, it's been along time, getting injured in the process, scaring his face and damaging his vice box. Stormshadow takes him into his family clan, he was his squad mate. He trains with the clan, winning them over. The Hard Master is killed, by an agent of cobra( a dude that can disguise himself as anybody). Storm Shadow in his jealousy, fights Snake Eyes, thinking he did it. The Hard Master had favored Snake Eyes. He injures Snake Eyes, but gets banished. He later finds out, the killer was from Cobra, and joins them to find out who did it and why. Snake Eyes joins GIjoe, thinking Storm Shadow went bad. That's from the comic, there is your film.
@@ardendragoon Indeed. All you need is an actor who knows the franchise, and the character, and is able to convey with subtle body movement. Tons of potential. But hey, we all know Hollywood's gone full-blown lazy and is tossing potent storylines and characters all over the floor.
Take a mysterious, silent ninja in a super-cool outfit who never shows his face and always acts righteously... but turn him into a ninja we know everything about, talks all the time, doesn't really act like a hero and only give him a cool outfit in the last 5 minutes of the movie... also pick an actor who wants his face to be shown in 99% of the movie. What could possibly go wrong?
Snake Eyes is ultimately the bad guy in his own film, so all of those supposed emotional beats don't garner any sympathy. Making the bad guy the protagonist in a genre movie requires a lot more work.
yeah all I think of Snake eyes is that he's the annoying villain all along. worst than the stupid mini boss in the movie which is trash and the whole plot is just braindead half way. I noticed this because I fell asleep after 10 minutes in the movie.
They made an origins movie for a character who's famous for never talking, and not only had him speaking through the whole movie which...okay, fine, if they actually explained why he either took a vow of silence or lost the ability to speak for one reason or another (either way works depending on the continuity) by the end of the movie, but they...just...never do. *what*
my main issue why is snake eyes asian? He was white dude in show and comics, chop this up to today's stupid social climate when its actually more racist have asian dude do martial arts stuff, hmmmm
They did Ironhide dirty! He should have gone out in a blaze of glory, but instead he got shot in the back by a coward..which is probably why that scene still lingers today. Poor Ratchet! Our favorite field medic just wanted to be left alone 😭
@@nicknitro86 Ironhide had the most underserved death while Ratchet had the most heartbreaking one...tho my boi was loyal till the end...i gotta appreciate how they really have no problems by showing horrible deaths even with the good guys, like you would expect only the bad ones to die in a horrible way, yet even our bots that we all love, are not excluded from getting a horrible demise
Even in the theater I remember thinking "really?" when I found out what the stone can do. I mean, yeah, that would have been revolutionary hundreds of years ago, but nowadays that can be more or less replicated by any number of weapons. What makes this stone special now, beyond it's symbolism? It's like they needed a Mcguffin and just didn't think too deeply beyond that.
The best idea I can think of for a GI Joe movie is showing the formation of Cobra. Imagine a movie where Cobra Commander slowly recruits specific members of the organization, ending the film with the complete team
We already had that in Rise of Cobra, so its either reboot the series again with Duke or make it an 80s period piece about Joe Colton the 1st G.I Joe and the Cold War Origins of the Group or even spin off to other characters in the shows and Toyline. There is also Cobra La but you can save them for a later phase. Also they can lean on the International nature of GI Joe in the movies and have its members have conflicts within the organisation due to them being previously on different sides and/or due to personal disagrements, for example you can make Duke and Falcon disagree with each other because they have contrasting views on how to take on Cobra Commander.
@@Pretzelcoatlus yeah but there are some good ideas in the movies that can be useful in adapting a new GI Joe reboot like the International nature of the organization and the Mars corporation but a whole lot more can be ignored.
I learned that, as a storywriter, not every character has to have their own backstory. What if Blizzard made an origin story campaign about Dr. Ariel Hanson in StarCraft II? That would never make any sense.
I actually loved the extra material blizzard used to have. Every spell, enemy, and building had a lot of lore if your willing to read the manual (and it was worth it too). . I curse the person who dipped my diablo manual in mud. . For example did you know in Warcraft healing doesn't "close wounds" it actually just shares the wounds with everyone (a broken leg split between everyone is... nothing).
I forgot this film even existed. It shows how much people cared about GI Joe this year. At least the older movies had some actors like Dwayne Johnson who could bring attention to a more general audience.
It didn't even need a recognizable actor for me imo (and I've seen Henry Golding in better films like The Gentlemen anyway), just acceptable action choreography and a straightforward story.. but nah, the opening minutes from this film already showed that it was going to be meh, the script didn't care much for how it wants to portray the characters.. it starts by showing how important his dad was to his life but then the rest of the film discards that, makes Snake Eyes be like an idiot by not showing like even flashbacks or additional moments talking about his dad that would blindside him to trust a guy that claims to know his killer quick, then tries to be clever with the twists and all between working for one guy and being betrayed and all that, then has an arbitrary fire stone that wasn't established properly for the extent of its power, there are more but I already gave this film too much time already than it didn't deserve. Oh and Snake Eyes is supposed to be a mysterious figure period
Did GI Joe ever have mystical items and stuff like that before? I always thought it was just purely military action based. Magical rocks and giant mythical snakes don't seem to fit the GI Joe universe.
th-cam.com/video/lXn0B9CQtVA/w-d-xo.html GI Joe did start out quite grounded, but intodused more and more SF elements, like mindscaners and robots, and we have cobra commander that transform into a snake thing...... then we have Zartan who can shape shift.
Depends on the continuity, The comics were pretty well grounded in reality. Most of the vehicles were production military vehicles customizes for the Goes. (Skystriker / F14 Tomcat, VAMP / XR-311, etc.) The Sunbow/DIC animated series however was geared more towards pushing toys and as such was constantly getting line refreshes which pushed things further and further into superhero mumbo jumbo. The Cobra La thing (GI Joe the Movie) was about the worst decision the original series made.
My issue with the dice is... would you name yourself after what basically killed your dad? Thats like Batman calling himself The Bullet. Or Robin calling himself The Circus.
Yeah the mortal Kombat movie was good, definitely better than the original. I think it only misstep was that we never got to see the actual tournament but that's what sequels are for.
Ok, interesting. In my country the Movie wasn't marketed as "GI Joe: Snake Eyes" but just "Snake Eyes", maybe because GI Joe hasn't been a thing here as far as i know. Also the Trailers and Adds i've seen for the Movie always depicted it as a dark, action-packed Fighting Movie catered to adults, not kids.
This was directed by the same guy who did "R.I.P.D", which you also covered. But what I was really surprised to find out is, he wrote and directed a film titled "The Captain" that was pretty well received and made with quite a bit of passion. So I guess he's a decent filmmaker when he writes and directs his own vision, but tends to be handed shitty scripts by Hollywood.
Snake Eyes should've been a brutal rated-R film with the style of The Raid. The Raid did it with like...under a 10M dollar budget. Why can't others? Plus it would've been so much cooler if Snake Eyes simply kept his mask on.
Even as a kid watching GI Joe as it aired I couldn't imagine wanting a live action movie about any of the characters solo, let alone present day. The best GI Joe movie is the animated one and it's good because of the ensemble Avengers feel and the animation and it does this ingenious unexpected storyline with Cobra Commander. There are some cool GI Joe characters but none enough to hold up a 2 hour movie by themselves, it's just silly to me make movies about these characters.
Two most important lessons I got from Filmento movies is, the important of building up to things, and that you need realistic goals and actions for the main character regardless of how much cool stuff you place around him.
“Oh, I have a good idea, let’s market the hell out of the iconic suit in the trailers, merch and posters, even though it only makes a total of 5 seconds of screen time, that won’t give up fans hopes”
The fact that snake eyes finds out the villain works for cobra, but still decides to betrays the Arashikage clan by stealing the jewel. Is the reason why Tommy is expelled from the clan and striped his birth right to lead the clan. Is also the reason why the Arashikage clan is attacked leading to countless deaths. Like how is he even considered a hero, by all account should be the villain.

Enola was so cliché she was just blend (rebel who won't use gloves or act feminine how groovy i'm-not-like-other-girls). And Sherlock?? Omg! The real Sherlock is an intellectual, an analyst, he acts on his principles with no regards for what other people think of him, he is eccentric, genuine, blunt. He has bursts of laughter and poignant remarks that no-one would dare speak. And in this movie they made him a little crying apologetic baby with no personal power or agency!! Also he is tall and very slim and quick, and Henry Cavill is built like a bull. Do they even know who Sherlock Holmes is??
The problem boils down to wanting to be the 80's nostalgia, but at the same time having post-2000 mentality. Good is good and Bad is bad, but also we have the seriousness of actual terrorists and the rampant use of technology. The maguffin rock is pure 80's, which looks real dumb when the Baroness already has that power ie blow stuff up. Obviously this would have worked better had it focused on one mentality: the maguffin rock is a mind control thing or imbues superpowers. Or have a spy thriller as the good guys and cobra are working to influence the clan to gain a powerful ally and the rock is just a symbol of the clan. For its other flaws at least the first GI Joe movie got the mentality correct. On a side note I wanted to say that Stormshadow's expulsion doesn't make sense thematically. Sure he used the rock, but it only blew up a wall. If he killed someone sure I could understand, like they were surrounded and he uses the rock to kill all of them. But no, just a wall. Now you have to be kicked out forever.
This one is easy. Kids don't know or aren't invested in the character and adults who grew up with GI Joe didn't like the "artistic liberties" the studio took with the character and back story.
Just once, I'd LOVE to see writers put a hero into a situation where a person demands they do a morally irreprehensible thing in exchange for something and the hero blandly agrees and then just goes to the mark and tells them "Yo, I was sent by your enemies. Let's go ambush them and take the thing they're keeping from me." You know, some writers besides The Mandalorian and comics Deadpool.
Honestly that's where I thought this movie was going to go after Snake found out he was 100% working for terrorist. I thought he'd go meet with Tommy and be like "bro please listen, I f@cked up. I need your help"
This movie dropped the ball so hard. It took an entire film to put him into his iconic suit. Waited the entire film today to see the suit. He should have been in the suit the entire movie hide his face make him mysterious like he should always be
So in early July, we had Taskmaster portrayed as completely silent and mysterious And in late July, we had Snake Eyes portrayed as a talkative himbo I enjoyed both movies and all, but did their script editors run into eachother in a hallway and dump all their paperwork everywhere, awkwardly mix their notes together, grab handfuls of documents here and there, laugh and go their separate ways?
This movie works if you see it as a Storm Shadow origin story with Snake Eyes as the antagonist. In spite of the plot weaknesses, Andrew Koji really did the character of Storm Shadow justice, in my opinion.
That part at the end of the fight in the warehouse, when our 'heroes' casually run past a whole crew of armed henchmen who just stand there watching and let them escape.. Cinema gold..
I used to read G.I Joe comics and the best ones were about Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Billy, Cobra Commander's son. They should have read the original stories before making this bore.
I think the issue with that is writers, directors, and studios want their own version, and give no credit or money to the original writers of those stories. Why not use the history of the Star Wars books and variety of media for the new films? Because Disney and JJ Abrams want their own version and give nothing to those original writers.
G.I. Joe is a franchise that has lots of potential. Hell I consider G.I. Joe Retaliation to be one of the best in the franchise and say all you want about it, at least it's entertaining and actually enjoyable. With Snake Eyes, they got a bunch of things wrong as far as the story goes but the action is actually pretty cool. For me, what can work to make this even better is to actually build on the 3 core values of Snake Eyes character which is Silence, Nobility, and Warrior and have the movie be about how he has to choose between either A. Be a member of the ninja clan and learn how to be a noble and kind warrior and let go of wanting revenge or B. Continue work for the Yakuza to bring them the McGuffin and get revenge on his dad's killer. Have the moments where Snake Eyes trains also have him train with Storm Shadow and give character development to have them actually bond kind of like brothers. But ultimately his thirst for revenge gets the better of him and he trades the stone for the killer who actually isn't so alive nor held hostage, instead it's an ambush where it's revealed that Cobra ordered the hit on Snake Eyes dad and they like taunt him on being alone before memories of Storm Shadow flash and Snake realizes what he's done and leads into the 3rd act finale. Make the movie about Snake Eyes essentially becoming that silent and noble ninja we all love today while also feeling the regret he does when Storm Shadow renounces him rather than what we got here.
YESSS!! Exactly. Like at the very very very least he should be silent, noble, and a warrior. That's literally the character. If he's not those three or any one of those three, then he's not snake eyes.
Seriously, did any of the writer read the comics or watch the 80s cartoons? It's like they focused on the actions first and then made a story out of it without considering that the original character's story.

Also the lack of ray park doesn't help it either.

Why couldn't snakes eyes ask storm shadow to search for his dad's killer? I bet with the manpower and resources he had he could have done it.

My biggest disappointment in this film was that I felt like I'm not watching a G.I. Joe movie.
In my experience, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
It's like the first one, they bought a script, changed character names, and slapped the GI Joe logo on it.
There is nothing worse for a blockbuster movie to be outperformed by Shamalan…

This movie has big issues and forgetable but it least it had cool fight scenes, great sets and set design, solid acting, decent dialogue, and great cgi overall. That's why he never show his face and couldn't talk.
@@ristopaasivirta9770 at least in the previous gi joe movie, the backstory showed that, snake eyes and storm shadow were trained under the same master since they were a kid. The best and most satisfying part of the movie is this Anatomy of Failure.
Seriously though, did anyone actually expect this movie to succeed?
True, its a "prequel" of two bad movies.
Dear filmento please make anatomy of a failure for Enola Holmes . I want to learn how to write a detevtive sotry and maybe you could teach how to write a detevtive mysetry story unlike enola holmes. Please Mr.Filmento. I am a quite fond of your work especially since the spectre video.
A story built on coincidents. *bruh*
Plus do a film perfection on run hide fight
detevtive mysetry

Oh yes good suggestion! I tried to watch that movie and had to give up after some minutes.
Only thing I liked about this movie was Iko Uwais, *"The Raid: Redemption" and "The Raid 2"* will always be my favorite martial art movies.
@Nola Corinne fr
He should have been in the suit the entire movie hide his face make him mysterious like he should always be
So in early July, we had Taskmaster portrayed as completely silent and mysterious
And in late July, we had Snake Eyes portrayed as a talkative himbo
I enjoyed both movies and all, but did their script editors run into eachother in a hallway and dump all their paperwork everywhere, awkwardly mix their notes together, grab handfuls of documents here and there, laugh and go their separate ways?
This movie works if you see it as a Storm Shadow origin story with Snake Eyes as the antagonist. In spite of the plot weaknesses, Andrew Koji really did the character of Storm Shadow justice, in my opinion.
That part at the end of the fight in the warehouse, when our 'heroes' casually run past a whole crew of armed henchmen who just stand there watching and let them escape.. Cinema gold..
My friend and I went to this last week. Now I’m all for action films, even bad ones - but not boring ones. And this was boring.
Hmm so no one is going to mention the fact that this story has nothing to do with the actual Snake Eyes for G.I. Joe.
Actually the premise of the movie is straight outta the snake eyes comics
@@bryanross1838 Very loosely.
And which issues from the Marvel comics where those?
@@bryanross1838 farrrrrr from it man
Seriously, did any of the writer read the comics or watch the 80s cartoons? It's like they focused on the actions first and then made a story out of it without considering that the original character's story.
I miss when Gi Joe was cool historically accurate soldier uniforms now its this weird superhero thing....idk maybe try a historical film that is kinda on the sillier kid friendly side but that is too much to ask of the movie industry.
Moral is: if you’re going to write a story make your main character drive the narrative and not the other way round!
I grew up with G.I. Joe toys, I enjoyed the comics and cartoons alot. The movies were painful to watch as a grown-up...
Did anyone else notice that the Snake Eyes actor spoke in a British accent when things got more serious or when he whispered?
