Hey, it seems that the food only goes down from chain bola'ing it because the chain bola does a small amount of damage. Once it reaches full health again, that's when the food starts ticking down by 1 again. So, it's not so much the bola itself, but the damage you're doing to it. Imo method #2 is the best for that reason. Upvote so he can see. Edit: in fact you can probably skip the first bola altogether. Just start shooting it until its food drops enough, then chain bola and feed it. It's likely that this could even be done with arrows or a spear for minimal resource expenditure.
The second one was the fastest, just gotta be careful not to kill it and also scout out the area for any other harmful creatures. All of the methods were essentially the same though. Damage it either with bolas or arrows/bullets and it starts to heal and then food goes down quick. The second one could probably be even a lil faster if you bola it twice in a row.
As of yesterday, you can still shoot them with a regular bola to trap them. After that you have to use the chain. It took me three hours to tame a max level on our servers (300) before I found out about the food. Also - if you start the taming process and it picks you up and you damage it, you have to start again.
Brilliant! For method 3 you don't even need a trap! I was just about to try to get another one as well thank you nooblets for consistent, awesome and helpful videos!
Your best bet seems to be to either damage it a little before you trap it or damage it after you've chain bolad it, it's food will drop pretty rapidly to heal. Managed to tame a 140 in a few minutes on a 2x taming server. Just had to punch it a few times after the first chain bola hit then wait a bit, chain bola it again.. then check it's food.. should be dropping fairly quickly.
It doesn’t lose more food just because it’s in a bola it’s losing food because the bola damages it a little bit so really the best way to tame it would be the second way because your not using bolas just to damage it
Could you combine methods two and three? Use method two until it’s ready to be fed then hit it with multiple bolas all at once so you can just sit there and feed it?
The amount of time it remains in the Bola state does not stack with consecutive bolas, not sure if that's what you were asking exactly but that's how I interpreted it. OP is correct though, method 2 should be the only method used. The way you inflict the damage does not matter.
I just shoot at it and it's hunger goes down to 0 basically. It does not affect the taming effectiveness either. Your demonstration was also a very useful one as well.
Just now tamed my 1st Tropeo. I adjusted the taming strategy since I was nervous about the bola not lasting long enough to build the pen. I built a 2x8 stone foundation with a stone dino gate front and walls made of stone door frames, topped with stone ceilings to close it off. Shot the tropeo with a weak assault rifle to aggro it and ran into the pen. Closed the pen and then used your Bola method to drain it's food (as in a previous comment, someone said the food drains to the dmg inflicted by the bola which is correct, Wild Tropeo regens its lost health quickly which drains it's food). Repeated the bola process until it was about 1,500 food down and bola'd it once again to feed it and it tamed. So for those worried about the bola timer, use the regular pen method..... just watch your line of sight while shooting the bolas in between the stone door frames.. it flies through no problem. I do thank you for making this video, made it pretty easy to tame my 1st Tropeo.
2ed method is the best hands down it's a bit risky due to it being heavily damaged but it's the cheapest and fastest way to do this thank you for this amazing video.
X = Ballista with Chain Bola [ ]= Pillar ! = Gap where snow owl can flew through | | = Walls (Door Frames) / \= Dino Gate P = Weak Pteranodon (low lvl with no melee investments) Note: The trap will have ceiling to prevent it from flying out and will require 6-8 stone foundations X |[ ! ]| | | P | | / \ Strategy: Hit the trop once to get its agro and carefully lure it towards the trap and fly between the pillars. Once the Tropeo is in, quickly dismount and close the gates and head towards the ballista to then bola it. Once bola hop on the Ptera and start pecking it down to half or a third of its health (being in first person will help see the health bar on the tropeo) then observe the food bar carefully so you wont get grabbed. Once food is half or 3/4, bola it again if it has already broke out and feed it meat or its preferred kibble (Extraordinary skin work especially well) and it should tame very quickly. I've used this method and tamed many Tropeognathus in quick succession and it has my Otter of Approval (seals aren't in ark so the otter will do)
Isn't it possible to combine all 3 methods ? Bola once, build the trap, bola a second time, drop its health, and when ready to give kibble bola it multiple times so as to be able to give all kibble in one go?
I don't know why Ark doesn't just sponsor you for an Ark podcast or TH-cam series. Lord knows that would be the first wise investment of money they've ever done (unlike Atlas, the genesis maps, and Ark feat. Vin Diesel (???)).
What if i tried kicking it with an Equus to damage it and raise its torpor causing it to keep running away, would that still cause it starve faster from the damage or does it only lose food while in a bola?
