  • Replace relay on 2005 Honda Accord. A P0685 error code was given and it caused the dashboard lights to flash on and off, ABS seemed to act up, power to the radio went off - but these were very quick intermittent problems. P0685 is ECM/PCM Internal Circuit Malfunction (Power Control Circuit)
The part is a Engine Control Module Wiring Relay item# 20580
    Skill level: Beginner
    Tools needed: None
    Time required: 15 minutes
Cost: $40 or less (if you buy online it's cheaper)

I had this problem on a 2003 Honda Accord ex v6 AT. Symptoms were Radio, and Dashlights would turn off while driving followed by car stalling for a split second. Headlights would dim or get brighter on acceleration and deceleration like the car is starving for electrons from the alternator (or serpentine belt loose?). The code came up P0685 on a blue driver.
    The solution so far:
    1) Checked the relays under the driver's side. EI main, IG coil, and since I was there Fuel pump. Took them off. Cut a regular house light wire. Somewhat held the relay end to the battery under the hood (Caution the relay is not protected anymore from the fuse box). I heard the relay click, concluding relay was good.
    2) Cleaned the grounding wire surfaces around the engine bay from the black and white pictures I referenced on forums. The reference below is the Driver side/Passenger side instead of left and right.
Battery negative to Car wall (driver side), Car wall to Transmission (under air filter driver side), Battery positive harness traced to the throttle body (2 small wires)(driver side engine side), Battery positive harness traced to a bracket power steering pump/injectors (Passenger side on the engine), Motor mount to car wall Passenger side near the serpentine belt.
    3) After cleaning the grounds and checking the voltage on the battery and alternator the code is gone. The battery grounds are referenced (C101, C102 etc on forums)
    4) I got another code for the throttle body P2101. That was because I took the air filter housing off to get at the Grounded wire transmission to the car body. I probably should have cleaned the throttle body but didn't. I'll clean it next weekend. hopefully, that will get rid of the code.

Sometimes a bad electrical connection can throw this code. I got this code and cleaned up the corrosion on my battery terminal, and it fixed it. Wasn't even that bad!

I have a 2007 Honda Accord and your video was very helpful. The poor lighting wasn't a problem for me because I had already been in that spot and taken a photo of it, so your instruction just confirmed what I suspected. Thanks for posting this.

I was having the same exact issues as you I had the same engine code as well, I have the same exact car. I just changed mine this evening and drove about half hour home with no issues. I’m hoping this solved my problem. Thank you very much!

Hi William! Thanks for the video. I got this code when I scanned my 2005 Honda Accord and I did everything exactly as you showed here in this video. That was 3 weeks ago. Now the problem is back again. Could there be another big problem? I had purchased a brand new part from AutoZone when I replaced that piece 3 weeks ago. I was planning on driving my car cross country and now I’m scared of getting stranded if I drive the car. Can you please advise?

Kev Flores you could try returning the part and getting a new one especially if the code is back. I didn’t have any more problems in mine. But you don’t want to drive with the car with this issue.

The car is running great! However, the issue it has is the stereo and some of the dash lights won’t come on and the power locks and lights won’t work if the ignition is not turned on. Do you think this might work? I am going to replace any how. Will keep you posted! Thanks for your insight!
