little Sax, the ghost | Kirsten Townander
If you are looking to purchase this piece, check back here soon!
Program Notes:
little Sax, the ghost (2023) is a musical storytelling of the peculiar life of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. With a career so legendary, it is unsurprising that many musicians know his name.. but what most people don't know is just how unusual his life was. Sax's childhood years were permeated with near-death experiences-incidents so unique and frequent that one can't help but laugh.
Divided into five movements, the tale of little Sax, the ghost follows Sax's life chronologically. The piece opens and closes warmly, the bittersweet Lullaby and Eulogy acting as covers of a book that envelop the story. The melodic material of these two movements was drawn from Chant Sacré, a work of Hector Berlioz that served as the platform for the saxophone's premiere in 1844. Between the bindings, the piece delves into three specific accounts of Sax escaping Death's grip: a dangerous encounter with a staircase, an almost-lethal mishap in his father's workshop, and a treacherous trip down a raging river. At times obvious and others discreet, the Dies Ira is incorporated into all five movements each time, a warning that Death may be on its way.
Suffice it to say, it is nothing short of a miracle that the saxophone exists today. The intentions of little Sax, the ghost, therefore, are to celebrate the instrument and simply poke fun at the incredibly unlucky life of its creator!
I. Lullaby 0:00
II. The Stairs 1:53
III. The "Milk" 5:58
IV. The River 10:48
V. Eulogy 15:08

Military Band Excerpt Masterclass | SSG Chance Stine
มุมมอง 1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
SSG Chance Stine came out to UT and put on a masterclass where a few of us prepared some excerpts from the most recent army band packet. I was fortunate enough to perform a few Candide excerpts as well as the Mozart duet from the packet. Some of the audio peaked, due to my oversight on the mic'ing. I still wanted to post this because SSG Chance Stine says so many insightful things about these a...

I'm relearning the flute | life of a music student
มุมมอง 1K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of the biggest things I've learned during these first few weeks of classes is that we've all had different experiences up to this point. I might have learned something a completely different way than the person sitting next to me, and that's okay. There is so much value in learning about someone else's perspective. Let's all be kind to one another :) ethanashley_sax bit.ly/eth...

Even though it is supposed to sound chaotic, there is something beautiful about it and its representation. Happy birthday Sax
the reason why the middle d is so hard to play is because the octave key is so far away from the d key and so when that tiny octave key hole is open and all the other keys are closed, it is really unsteady
WHAT IS THIS???
Go check out the full video!
Michael lowenstern is my favorite bass clarinet and composer in Brooklyn and I want to see him in concert in new york city next year !
That is the worse tenor solo I heard since…I have never heard worse.(I know it is supposed to be bad)
Good job!
Love this. Incredible!
🔥🔥🔥
I loved this!!
Oh, your experience with the sequence of playing soprano and alto exactly mirrors mine. I always practice my soprano first, then alto, and I find it really helps my alto playing, but oddly, not the other way around. My soprano is now in the shop and I miss it. :( Please make an oboe video. Military bands are amazing. I just saw a President's Own Marine Band concert when they came to our local university last week. You would also be an amazing teacher, or anything else that you would like to do. Love your videos and hope the semester/term goes great for you!
Sorry about the grammar in my question dude 😅 Thanks for the advice though!
No worries!
That’s me

ITS BARI SAX NOT BASS SAX
It’s bass sax
theres a bass everything
Bass saxophone is exceptional, especially in Classical music, and in Jazz. Especially especially ESpecially in Block chord solis. I will elaborate on that, by classical music, I mean good classical music. Anything from Christmas scores, to historically known compositions. You have to take the Bass seriously, that's one of the most important features to playing it more often, other people see it as a silly side piece. But hearing it in Jupiter years ago really piqued/🗻 my interest. I'd gladly compose a ensemble piece for Sopranino, Soprano, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baris, and a Bass. It adds that missing layer that Baritone sometimes lacks in...I mean it's an octave below Tenor which is incredible.
This year for Christmas, I want a Tenor or Bari sax, they are both cool but I play the Alto sax. Bari sax is in same key, but requires more air and may come with a Low A key. Tenor sax is tuned in Bb, not Eb. But it has a powerful and rich sound. Both of these require more air than the Alto sax. Venn Diagram lol.
I've been playing flute for 12 years now, and ordered my first saxophone today, i hope it wont be that hard to switch to sax
Good luck! You’ll be fine!
i can play brass and sax but flute is pretty much no go for me... its really hard
I will be learning some brass next semester so that should be interesting.
i really wanna hear the bari part to bemba colora on this
maybe
You've made a lot of progress since the first time around! I am so looking forward to your oboe videos! :) My main instrument in school was clarinet, but I had to pick up the oboe because one of our oboe players graduated. It certainly is a different beast, with the embouchure, resistance, etc. I picked up saxophone much later in life as my retirement present, and oddly or not, I found it the most difficult to learn with respect to embouchure and air support, as I kept wanting to default back to a clarinet embouchure (no double lip influence from the oboe, thank goodness!) Best of luck!
Thanks for the kind words! Its always cool hearing about others past experiences with different instruments. We are learn differently and its interesting to see what might be more difficult for different people.
The flute is not for everyone, kid. It's also the easiest instrument. (Saxophone main here as well) Did you know the flute improves saxophone skills?
Thanks
After playing flute for 10 years, I can confidently say that all the problems you had never really go away...I still have to think about where I'm placing the flute on my face, and the middle register between F on top of the staff and the D above that is probably the hardest register to get a consistent and beautiful tone on. Don't even get me started on 3rd octave technique... Overall you've made a lot of great progress in just 6 weeks, and I'm super excited to see how oboe goes for you
I guess I never thought about it that way. I just assumed eventually most of my problems would be solved with bettering my habits. Thanks for the kinds words and the advice. You are the goat when it comes to the flute 🫡
I just have an Oboe Reed and I just Played in it for No reason. One Day me friend who Played oboe let me borrow his instrument and in less than a minute I played the concert Bb Scale. Oboe and Sax are Insanly Simillar and You will have tonnes of fun.
Ehh, not really, two different register/ octave keys, forked F, left F, or normal F are unlike anything else, C natural being 1 and 1, the Eb and C keys for the right hand pinky being flip flopped, the C# key being on the right, plus the whole embouchure thing with learning double reeds, its really not similar, at all, and that's from somebody who plays both.
@@FNBRVolts Well As Far as I know (I only had a chance to play oboe for 5 Minutes) Tey are quite similar. But you are probably right.
during you practice session where you just doing some methods stuff or were you playing a piece of music, if so what is that piece called? thank you loved the video might look into buying a wrist saver.
I played some of the Desenclos Quatuor Mvt. I. Glad you liked the video!
My 7th grade year i played alto sax, and my 8th grade year i switched to bari sax, and my 9th grade year i ended up playing tenor sax for marching and alto for concery, sadly my school doesnt have a soprano Saxophone or bass saxophone but if they did i would totally play it!
That’s awesome that you’ve had the chance to play so many of them!
Schools never give Soprano sax a chance 😥
@@SpaceDude-lb8xo I've seen them used in high school ensembles and jazz band and even first alto in concert band doubling. Takes a little more skill to master. In most high schools, you would probably end up with a very out of tune soprano section of one decided to do that. The one exception I could see is perhaps an arts high school.
I just submitted Mine. Could You make more Bari Sax Videos? I don't think you have posted many, but you have mentioned that you play it in some videos.
Thanks for sending one in! I actually don’t have a bari sax available for me to use or else I’d love to
can i send one friday?
Send one whenever
I just submitted mine
Awesome man!
Amazing tone
Have to make a full video
Already have!
Damn that sounds good!
I just got a brand new low C bass clarinet, so I know exactly what you're talking about. It's like your eyeballs are vibrating!
I really want to try some bass clarinet!
@@ethanashley_sax it's so much fun!
Non judgemental non judgemental non judgemental non judgemental non judgemental non judgemental non judgemental per page per page per page per page and helps you with a piano:chubby
When I play low C, B, or Bb on my Alto sax, it makes the entire instrument shake, but not my face lol.
Cool to see that sax again. I remember being assigned it my freshman year from Dr. Page, and then I ended up continuing to play that thing for the next 5 years.
Haha, hopefully that’s still Inbo’s job in sax ensemble (He is much better on it that I am)
I think the second one is best❤
TONY! We used to have him in Michigan!
He’s the best of the best!
I actually had more trouble with clarinet than flute…and we are still battling 50+ years later😊
Such a funny video. I laughed during the whole thing. It sounds like a ship finding its way through the fog. Sounds really cool through my sub.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Try the tuba before you say it uses a lot of air 😂
I bet
Tuba tubing length = school bus length.
I'm learning tenor right now with the intention to transition to bass eventually. Subscribed! I want to see how you progress with this thing.
I'm wanting a Tenor for Christmas even though I have an Alto lol.
Candide?
Yes
I been playing for 3 years im getting there for Army
One of the best tones I've ever heard on sax. Beautiful
Thank you very much!
How long have you been playing
10 years. Which is crazy to say out loud, wow..
