Bill McDonagh, probably the sanest and most decent person in Rapture from day one till his unfortunate death. Bill thought himself fortunate to be a close friend of Ryan, but if you ask me Ryan was the fortunate one to have such a good man like Bill as a friend. Its a pity Ryan never listened to Bill outside of maintenance reports, things might have turned out better for everyone if he had.
Bill represents the actual worthwhile man that Ryan wanted to free from tyranny. Bill is a good, hardworking man who expects to gain nothing but by the sweat of his brow. Throughout his logs Bill is concerned with what works, and later he's concerned with what matches his principles (what works). He is continually disappointed by theorists who have never worked a real job in their lives.
bill was the true hero of rapture he followed ryan to the end of the earth and knew there was only one way to save rapture and it was to kill ryan this man is a legend to bad he died trying to save one of the things he loved by trying to kill the other thing he loved
McDough is pretty much the only sane voice you can find in Rapture. Everyone else, just totally mad. From Steinman to Sander, right up to Atlas. Very rarely, if ever, do you find a truely sane and rational person. Such a grim, morbid, yet rich world. With some of the greatest characters ever created inside. A true masterpiece, one that will never be matched.
Bill is one of my favorite bioshock characters. He did everything for his family and for others. Almost died trying to get back a little sister. Almost died fixing a structural weakness in rapture. Taught his wife how to defend herself. Couldn't bring himself to kill Ryan even after everything he done. Stayed away from plasmids. Fave families homes. His death hit me like a truck. And knowing his wife and child made it out of rapture and into the real world was the most heartfelt and satisfying ending to any bioshock media I've experienced
I've read the book quite a few times. Read it again recently. Always found that part sad. The fact that Ryan still thought of Bill as a friend even though he had just tried to kill him. For everyone who was executed and stuck on the walls outside his office, he apparently witnessed them getting killed. In Bill's case, he couldn't bear to stand witness to his execution. And the fact that Ryan's bodyguard Karlosky intended to execute Bill quickly and mercifully with a gunshot unlike the others who were crucified first.
I was really upset when he died and I wish he got more screen time and I do hope they make a dlc base on the book so we can play as Bill mcdonagh and Andrew Ryan in the near future
I'm reading the book just now. Not got to that bit yet but i guessed Bill wouldn't make it. He's one of my favourite characters in the game. I hope he shows up in the new DLC.
This guy would've been an awesome ally... I mean, his death is caused by his love of Rapture... once Andrew Ryan's made the wrong choices, he stuck to Rapture's side and fought against him, which led to his ultimate demise. Awesome dawg. Thanks to the Wiki for that type of knowledge. Hehehehe
@herofromthedark Apparently, Rapture, is located up in the North Atlantic. Between Iceland and Greenland. So I imagine the seawater in that part of the world would be extremely fucking cold.
@HeartOfInsanity McDonagh realized Ryan was going way too far and decided to try to kill Ryan to save Rapture from civil war, but failed and Ryan excecuted him and hung him up with all the other would-be assassins outside his office.
i was rooting for this guy all the way, he.... he didnt deserve to die like that. if you look his burned body is held to a wall through a giant spike like the others.... he was a great man, he didnt deserve to burn he deserved a hero's death, not an animals
If you have read the novel he was executed by a gunshot. He was killed in 1959, a year before the events of the game happened so his corpse likely rotted away in that time.
bobisaball SPOILER! ryan killed him because he tried to kill ryan but he couldn't because they were friends so he tried to escape with his family but he got caught but his family escaped but not him and then he got killed by ryan :( he is one of my favorite characters
@Darkstar263 Lol, I know, it's just that I was joking about the bit where he says "a witch's tit." I laughed to myself thinking, "How the hell does he know how cold a witch's tit is?"
Its sad when your realize that majority of the people of rapture who had a good sense morality and atcually bealived in the well being for the city and its people were killed off
@9tailedKitsune accually bill and ryan were very good friends, bill shouldnt kill ryan because of all he had given him and his family, so he just knocked him out, then right when they were about to escape rapture, ryans men got bill, but let his family go, ryans man shot him in the head to make it a fast death because ryan loved bill, he is not on the wall

The only decent person in the game. He managed to hold Raptures ideals without losing his morality.
But it's also his failure : the rapture ideals was not suppose to be moral

I love how Bill was an important character in BioShock: Rapture
Shame he wasn't an important character in the games
he was my favorite NPC in Bioshock. He only had a few audio diaries but had such a deep and touching story.

KaliShiva26 Yea Ryan was more interested with scientists, artists and entrepreneurs then the people who literally built Rapture.

bill mcdonalds
Wow.... this guy seemed like he would have been an amazing ally.
I realized atlas is just fontaine doing a McDonagh impression
@@TamaCinema69 even the biggest bastard knew who was the most alright guy in rapture
Bill is my favorite minor character.
He's a major character in the Bioshock book, makes him even more awesome :D
Read the novel. He's one of the .ain protagonists.
bill was the true hero of rapture he followed ryan to the end of the earth and knew there was only one way to save rapture and it was to kill ryan this man is a legend to bad he died trying to save one of the things he loved by trying to kill the other thing he loved
Hes the working class man, and thats why so many people who play Bioshock love him. He speaks his mind.
God I love this dude, voice actor did a great job
The only guy with a brain down in rapture.
And one of the few with a proper soul, the way I see it.
Great character. Hard working objectivist, but overall a kind thoughtful person at heart

Fact: The same person who voices Bill here plays 'Chechen' in The Dark Knight.
You know -- "I want to hear, proposition" and "How much you want?"
Richie Coaster?
Richie Coster yes! Very good find. This man must be very good with his voice. Two VERY different characters.
Also he’s actually a teddy bear in real life lol
I read the book before playing the games and Bill quickly became my favorite, so I adored these audio diaries a bit more than the next player

Did anybody else cry when Bill died in the book?
Very late reply, but I just finished the book and was in tears.
I've read the book quite a few times. Read it again recently. Always found that part sad.

I love the grounding of his personality as the direct contrast to Ryan's grand dreams.
I only just started reading the novel; was just waiting to see if they explored that Audio Tape at 2:50, well done :).
Will Marsden Word for word the audio matches the book
ben squires a lot of lines in the book mirror the audio diaries. Especially Tennenbaum's
I think he represents Ryan's good conscience. And when people ignore they're good conscience, hell breaks loose.
I was really upset when he died and I wish he got more screen time and I do hope they make a dlc base on the book so we can play as Bill mcdonagh and Andrew Ryan in the near future
best bioshock character you never meet :(
bill was right about everything he said in every diary
The fact that this guy is voiced by the same person who played Pope in TWD, and the Russian mob leader in The Dark Knight is kinda weird
I love this guy. I love the book. I didn't really realize he was that important. The writer is fantastic too.
...but 'e's got the ADAM, and that makes 'im the guvna'.
came here only for the accent
I'm reading the book just now. Not got to that bit yet but i guessed Bill wouldn't make it. He's one of my favourite characters in the game. I hope he shows up in the new DLC.
A heroric legend.
I read the book and his death made me tear. By far one of my faveriot charicters!
Love this guy!!!
I like this character, I haven't read the book, but I can see he is not a bad guy just from his audio diaries
Imagine what would have happened if Ryan listened to bill more often
He is probably the most morally decent character in the game. He was just trying to help people
I don't know why, McDonagh has the coolest voice x3
freezing pipes reminds me of myself or my dad when lecturing my brother about leaving the taps on or something.
Yes, it is canon. You even see his corpse in the first Bioshock in Rapture Central Control.
'Stopping Ryan' is by far, my favorite.
AIN'T LIFE IN RAPTURE GRAND LOOOOOL
McDonald is my favorite character in bioshock
he's one of my favorite characters :D
Easily my favorite character in the first BioShock game. I just wish he was more expanded upon.
The book Bioshock: Rapture by John Shirley.
It's about how Rapture came to be.
Is McDonagh voiced by the same guy who does Frank Fontaine? I feel like they sound a bit similar
best collection by far
Mcdonagh reminds me so much of Mr. Hobbins in "Beneath a Steel Sky".
After reading the book, the auto diaries make much more sense.
True that. I recently finished the book myself.
A good man with principles... Ryan didn't have his principles set as strong, he cared more about power.
I am sure you already know this, but if you read the novel, you like this guy that much more :) Definitely my favorite character in this game
thanks for that
loyal brother
"i dont give a toss if you piss 'o go fishin"
The only sane person in the entire city.....
Hehehehe
Burping fire, spitting ice LOL xD
g'day mate, throw another shrimp on the barbie
I just finished it and thought it was great it makes the game 10x better because eveything is explained.
I always liked this dude, i wish he didn't have to die
The diaries are the shit!!!!
I didn't know that Captain Price went to Rapture after WW2 (Captain Price from the old CoD)
@herofromthedark
Apparently, Rapture, is located up in the North Atlantic. Between Iceland and Greenland. So I imagine the seawater in that part of the world would be extremely fucking cold.
Yeah, though occasionally the Cockney English accent can sound similar to an Australian, but in this case it's VERY cockney.
You do. Andrew Ryan discovers Bill McDonagh when he comes to his house as a plumber..
dat is good i like stoppin ryan the best
@HeartOfInsanity McDonagh realized Ryan was going way too far and decided to try to kill Ryan to save Rapture from civil war, but failed and Ryan excecuted him and hung him up with all the other would-be assassins outside his office.
It sad that he ended up on Ryans wall as a corpse.

Reading it now. Very good.
vary good
thanks :D
Found this from Tulsa King
how did he die can anyone tell me!!!
bobisaball SPOILER! ryan killed him because he tried to kill ryan but he couldn't because they were friends so he tried to escape with his family but he got caught but his family escaped but not him and then he got killed by ryan :( he is one of my favorite characters
@Skadi482 good ol' cockney accents, always good for a laugh.
is that so? Which book is that?
I met a guy just like Bill last night
Just finished reading it...Im now that much more pissed Bioshock movie is not happening.
Only sane person in Rapture. Just started reading the book.
@Spiceofmadrid Yea I really didn't expect him to be the main character in the book I expected Andrew Ryan to be.
Anyone know if he survived?
@herofromthedark
He's a character in L4D and didn't startle one...
He was killed after failing to kill Ryan. His body is outside Ryans office.
the book is awesome and explaines everything in rapture :)
im sorry but...what book?
What book?
I'm going by the game, don't know what the book says.
@Darkstar263
Lol, I know, it's just that I was joking about the bit where he says "a witch's tit."
I laughed to myself thinking, "How the hell does he know how cold a witch's tit is?"

hahaha oh dear. :)
ain't life in rapture grand?
Its sad when your realize that majority of the people of rapture who had a good sense morality and atcually bealived in the well being for the city and its people were killed off
Can you give me a list? So we can pay respects to the few good souls that were tragically lost to the Civil war. 🙏
hm? I thought there was only one Bioshock book.
He was executed for trying to escape.. It was in the book
Also intended to kill Ryan but couldn't go through with it. At the very least, his wife and daughter managed to escape from Rapture
You missed the point if you say that. Ryan stuck to his principles too hard and stopped seeing the truth!
I thought you talking about atlas shrugged.
He didn't
400th like
@9tailedKitsune accually bill and ryan were very good friends, bill shouldnt kill ryan because of all he had given him and his family, so he just knocked him out, then right when they were about to escape rapture, ryans men got bill, but let his family go, ryans man shot him in the head to make it a fast death because ryan loved bill, he is not on the wall
bill mcdonagh en el libro es un gran tipo, que lastima :(
@HeartOfInsanity bill and ryan were very good friends, bill shouldnt kill ryan because of all he had given him and his family, so he just knocked him out, then right when they were about to escape rapture, ryans men got bill, but let his family go, ryans man shot him in the head to make it a fast death because ryan loved bill, he is not on the wall
That was sullivan who tried to kill Ryan. At least i'm pretty sure.
