    What makes Frank Fontaine so fascinating to me is how competitive he is. You get the sense that even before Rapture the guy was a Machiavellian manipulator who was willing to do anything to elevate status and control others. It’s hardly a god complex like Shodan, it’s more an elevated sense of self and a hunger to show himself as stronger than others.

      In the book it's revealed Fontaine isn't even actually Fontaine.
      Fontaine was a smuggler that started selling fish to Ryan's construction site.
      Frank killed him and stole his boat and identity to get the fishing job and to learn more about rapture.

      @@95keat Really? Man I didn't know that. So even his last name is a fake. There's no info of Frank before he became Frank Fontaine huh?

    • @95keat
      @95keat 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@nono9543 he even coins the crime as the first "identity theft"....the book is of mixed quality
      We know Frank was an orphan, learned how to lie from running away to the theater, and had many last names before conning a man out of his bar to listen in on the patrons and eventually learning of something being built in the Atlantic through said bar.
      That said the book being canon is up for debate. It's owned by 2k with approval from Ken Levine but he hasn't actually read it or at least hadn't at the time and doesn't consider it canon himself.

    Damn, say what you will about Fontaine, but he's smart and committed, he played everyone in Rapture for a fool and nearly got away with it, if he didn't give Tenenbaum the opportunity to free Jack from the spell he would've gotten away with the whole thing.

    • @hidan407

      Something that annoys me is WHY did he try to kill jack though? The only reason Jack had a reason to go after fontaine is cause fontaine tried to kill him. Besides that, they didnt actually have beef. Fontaine could have just sent jack back top side and go about his life.

    • @Brainflayer
      @Brainflayer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@hidan407 Well after Ryan spilled the beans about what happened, as well as after seeing Suchong's tapes, Fontaine knew Jack probably wouldn't be too happy with him after knowing that Fontaine made his whole life a lie and just made him murder his own biological father.

    • @hidan407
      @hidan407 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Brainflayer Well Andrew forced Jack to kill him when he could have helped jack obtain his own free will. Idk I think Ryan is just weird. He learned that he could control jack just as much as fontaine could but still decided to make jack kill him.
      Yeah its messed up that Jack was created cause of Fontaine and he did try to get jack to kill ryan even though it was Ryan who "pulled the trigger". Ryan could have won tbh but he gave up and says he is a man cause he *chose* to just give up.
      I think everyone in rapture just needs real therapy and not from someone like Sofia who decided to just make everything worse.

    • @molmolsmolses
      @molmolsmolses 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@hidan407 Fontaine always chooses murder, he probably doesn't trust anyone because he knows himself too well, anyone who could potentially beat him needed to go at some point in time because they couldn't be trusted to be by his side, especially those who had some sort of moral - they would end up giving up doing Fontaine's dirty work. Also, Jack was a liability when he was both a super soldier and conditioned to do what others wanted him to. Both Tenenbaum and Ryan knew how to pull Jack's strings, anyone else could learn as well. Andrew gave up in the end because he knew he couldn't stop Jack, he knew the WYK, but it was Fontaine and Tenenbaum who could really play with Jack's mind, there was no point for Ryan to fight back when Jack survived everything else Ryan threw his way.

    • @hidan407
      @hidan407 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@molmolsmolses For a guy like fontaine to scheme so much, he never once thought that it should be a good idea to have jack ONLY listen to him and no one else?
      They created him to be a super soldier from birth. I dont see why he didnt fully think it through to add things to make Jack the perfect weapon.
      Yeah Fontaine is so used to betraying people that its natural now smh. What I hate though is that fontaine could have honestly saved rapture. He knew all the issues from the very start and didnt buy the bullshit. He really could have done extreme good and took over rapture without even needing to take a life.

    As a person who does voicework for amateur things, I can clearly say that the voice actor must have enjoyed the 45:47 bit quite a lot. It's always my favorite when there is emotion in a line, and I get into character so deeply that my laughs are always genuine (even the villain laughs, lol). I bet it's the same here.

    That "you won't even walk till somebody says 'go'" line really stuck with me for some reason. Ryan's "A man chooses" speech is memorable, but I think this line also sums up the game's meta-commentary really well.

      Same voice actor. Took a few takes but he changed his voice part way through the line. Greg Baldwin wasn't used in the end because test audiences didn't trust his voice, so when Karl Hanover recorded for Atlas, he also rerecorded Fontaine's lines. It isn't reflected in the game credits but he confirms that it was him in interviews - which is also why Karl was used to play Fontaine in both sequels
