  • In todays video im looking at how well IK Multimedia's TONEX pedal goes with external effects.
I am looking at compressor and overdrive pedals before Tonex and Reverb and delays after TONEX.
The drive pedals ill be using are Earthquaker Devices Palisades, Great Eastern FX CO FOCUS FUZZ after the TONEX pedal Im using an AXE FX 3 for all of the reverb and delays.
If you are looking to buy your own TONEX Pedal, please consider using the link below to help the channel out just a little bit - ikmultimedia.s...
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

If you want a small portable rig with tons of options, and doesn’t cost $2,000, just get a ToneX for all amps and drive, a GT1000 core for all modulation, and a volume/wah pedal. Done. Small and light, and all in is about $1,000 less than a Kemper, Fractal, or even a Quad Cortex. Finally!

For those that keep asking why there is no fx loop. Here is your quick answer. Just throw a ts-9 in the front of the tonex and an Eventide H90 after the tonex pedal. Play for about 5 minutes then go to your local pub and drink until you have figured out why this works. You will thank me if you don’t have a hangover the next morning.

Yeah, that works really well when I use headphones with this unit.... oh wait, no, your big nright plan doesn't work with headphones now does it, hence why I won't buy this crap. Its 2023. Put a damn fx loop in it, period!!

It's 2023 use yer brain mate....
If you say you don't want have either I dont understand why you want tonex in the firstplace
as almost all of the captures are of an amp and cab so using it with an amp is not ideal, and studio monitors/full range speakers are the best match
and if you want to record you have to have an interface which has a headphone port and the abilty to power it via a plug or a computer.....
You convinced yourself you found a flaw but ultimately if you thought a little harder the solution was simple and obvious...

    • @conordyer2307
      @conordyer2307 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Also none of your other pedals have headphone ports so why are you treating this pedal any different?
Even the 'top dog' strymon irridium doesn't have headphones, or an fx loop nor does any other amp-in a box pedals that i have seen....
It's an amp in a box pedal not multi fx- but as courtesy,
they added some built-in comp, distortions, reverb and a headphone port for you to practice with headphones, you can even combine reverb heavy amp and cab captures with drive pedal captures using the software and save it as a preset for all-in-one style practice.....technically how do you create an fx loop for it when it's a capture??? Fx loop implys a separate physical power amp and cab and being able to have a send/return between them.....
So how do you do that in this case with a capture lol
But if you want to use your delays, reverbs and modulation pedals use the tonex like the amp-in a box pedal that it is and you use the 2 simple methods in my previous comment to use headphones with your complete rig....

Very interesting point about how a standard effects loop routes pristine digital effects through an imperfect guitar speaker cab (or in the case of an amp + effects in a box, through an IR emulation of the imperfections of a guitar speaker cab). I saw a video about Larry Carlton's live set up a few years ago. He had his own mic in front of his guitar amp connected to a small mixer that sat close to him. He applied his reverbs, delays etc in the mixer and sent them to two PA speakers (eg, something like 12" JBLs) that sat on the stage either side of the guitar amp. The guitar amp and two PA speakers were then mic'ed up for FOH and stage monitoring. At the time I thought it was preserving the amp tone in its purest form, as well as getting his effects in stereo. But your video makes me think it was also about preserving the quality of his post-amp effects by applying them after the guitar cab.

The lack of a FX Loop is primarily an issue for using the Tonex with headphones. I do understand why it isn't necessary if you are running this into another modeler, or even if you plan to send the output to a FRFR, etc. In that case, you can simply place the effects that need to come after gain AFTER the Tonex in the signal chain.
But if you want to play with headphones, the Tonex, by definition, needs to be the last item in the signal chain. So a loop would would allow you to place delays and reverbs after the models themselves, many of which can get quite gainy. You pointed this out as an advantage of the BOSS IR-200 in your excellent videos on that product, and IK Multimedia obviously felt strongly enough about the importance of headphone use to give it a full 1/4" dedicated jack on the top of the device. So it's not a problem that will affect a lot of users, but for a very specific plug-and-play use case with headphones, it's noteworthy. That being said, the issue is mitigated by the fact that Tonex has reverbs built into it.

I know it's not exactly the same, but I've had good results using a TRS female-to-twin 1/4" male cables to drive headphones using the stereo output of an effect such as a UAFX amp pedal, a reverb, or a delay pedal. The units don't have a lot of power but can drive a headphone at moderate levels for silent room practice.

this is really smart engineering on Tonex part as even the Kemper cant have a drive pedal in front as the analog to digital front end doesnt handle that amount of gain, so you have to add pedals into the effects loop. this is why people are asking, its common place in the amp modeller hardware world to have to put your drives in a loop and then program the external pedal into the chain after the amp sim input stage,

Yeah, man. Your Bad Cat and Matchless captures are incredible. I've started using them most of the time. The captures feel like real amps. Not necessarily like an amp in the room, but like I were monitoring a mic'd amp in a studio. The Tonex is the only capture I've used that seems to have the amp feel as well as sound. I'm a long time Kemper user and though the Kemper gets very close in sound, the feel just isn't captured. The Tonex does capture the feel. I really dig my Tonex.

Hey Paul - interesting bit in there about how you like the Tonex captures more than the Fractal amp models. Totally understandable because they're your amps, and captured the way you dial them in and record them.
We do a lot of stuff with Fractal, QC, and now Tonex as well (and Line 6). I use Axe-FX III as my main live rig, but these new units like QC and Tonex are pretty amazing in how they capture your amps.
We've had great luck tone matching the Fractal amp models to our actual amps, including amps that don't exist in Fractal's ecosystem like my Bad Cat Cub iii 40 and Matchless Laurel Canyon. I'm curious if you've tried that before and how what you think of it.

Love your reviews and tips. I watch you all the time. OK so: for the price of the ToneX, buy a new Katana Artist Mk II head, buy the GAFC II controller for another $150 and you can do all of this for a fraction of the cost. Enough quality pedals, reverbs and delays built in to cover any tone or gig. And if you want it, the Katana actually does have an effects loop. And if anyone can hear the difference at your pub/bar gig or outdoor event (PA run by some low priced hired sound guy), I’ll buy you the $3500 Matchless 😂. These are all fantastic pedals and devices and certainly compete well against expensive Kempers and Neurals, but other than recording artists like the Studio Rats, who needs to spend this much on this gear? Plus if you buy the ToneX, you still have to have an amp, PA, speaker cab or power unit to be heard at a live performance and likely have to use your $2000 computer to make it sound decent. Maybe I’m too traditional or too cheap but you can do this for less and still sound fantastic. 🎸

Points all valid, of course. Yet there‘s others of us out there who a) don‘t feel like carrying bulky gear, or are getting too old for that; b) already own and gig with various PA speakers; c) play both acoustic and electric at shows, but only need electric occasionally, thus not justifying schlepping an extra amp or controller for that; d) already have a large, high-end array of pedals for acoustic, and simply wish to augment the board with something commensurately high-quality that will cater to electric. I‘m sure using a real tube amp - or a great modeling amp like the Katana - would knock my socks off and be a lot of fun. But if I can get close to that fun with a simple pedal giving me easy access to lots of great captures for different covers, I‘m all for it. Hence my purchase of the ToneX pedal just prior to watching this video. ;-) If it doesn‘t mess with my pristine acoustic sound when in bypass, then it‘ll stay.

People wish there was an FX loop because they practice, and craft their tones in headphones. While you can plug headphones directly into the tonex, you can't plug headphones into your verb/delay pedals. A significant amount of people are using the tonex instead of an amp, not in addition to one.

Then program the preset changes with my Boss MS3 where most of my effects would come from as well as part of the ms3 presets. I’d have to also buy a preamp or something when playing live through cabs though.

This demo hits at exactly what I've been chasing in regards to using analog drive pedals and digital amps. Lately I've been using a Vox Valve-Energy Silk Drive as a sort of always on input buffer/tone sweetener between my boost/drive/fuzz pedals and Focusrite Scarlet, and achieving decently realistic results. My philosophy with that is it's better to drive the Nu-tube to slight clipping than the interface preamp, and it also makes whatever Sim I'm using "feel" or ideally react in a more organic and analog way.
Anyway, this Tonex Pedal looks/sounds most impressive within this exceptional demonstration.
    Great job dude.
    Although IMO?
It's possibly IK's new $130 AXE I/O One interface that's eventually going to end up reeling me into the whole Tonex ecosystem me thinks.

There is a used case for different countries and regions on how venue would go but ultimately what you want is the flexibility, in cases where they don't allow to go direct to house so you go to mic'ed amp, or maybe they do allow then go to house. It will be trouble some to keep rearranging the pedal and setting it up instead of being ready for both scenarios.

Hi!!!! I've been testing the Tonex pedal with a Wampler Gearbox in front lately, and I've experienced significant changes in the volume of the sounds. I have a clean channel set up, and when I hit the distortion pedal, the volume increases a lot. I've also noticed it has less gain than it should. Could this be because I have the compressor activated or maybe the noise gate on the Tonex? What would be the most appropriate configuration?

I find that running all my delays and reverbs after the amp, they sound real "pretty". Sometimes I like this, but mostly I end up EQing my delays and verbs in-the-box to mimic going through a speaker cab, but I can't do that as easily on my pedals/live. I also enjoy running stereo fx into the front of an amp, and this is the only thing the ToneX can't do; only a minor complaint obviously.

What is the difference if I use ToneX in fractal send/return (Guitar -> Fractal (effects before amp) -> send -> Tonex -> Return (effects after amp like reverb etc.)). My idea is that if I use Tonex before the fractal input I am loosing Axe-FX virtual pedals like built-in compressors, drives etc. and need to have a pedalboard with physical pedals like yourself. If I use it in fractal send/return I lose a bit because converting digital/analog again and very small punishment but unnoticeable latency. Separately Fractal input and send/return (especially with humbaster in send/return) are low-noise circuits. Also Axe-FX input is variable impedance.

You’ve got you reverb and delays after the tone X. Where is the fuzz in the chain?

  • @jimmcdougall9973
    @jimmcdougall9973 ปีที่แล้ว

To me it was never about where the pedals should be placed, but rather how well it takes pedals. Some amps, without an effects loop, don’t take pedals well at all. Blackstar’s smaller solid state amps, to mention one.
On the other hand, putting delays and reverb after the Tonex sort of defeats having a usb output that go straight into your DAW, as you would now have to connect via an audio interface? Is this correct?

Hi Paul. Great video. I have a question. You have probably seen the Andertons video on Tonex. Lee and digital John didn't seem to be impressed at all, on the contrary, I think this tonex pedal (actually the software running on the computer) is the most influential guitar gadget for the past 10-15 years imho. I believe this controversy deserves a video, explaining why there's 2 different camps on this technology. As you have demonstrated on your videos, and others as well, tonex is capable of capturing a setting in an amp better than the competitors. Why wouldn't it be enough for people like Lee and Digital John? What else did they expect?
