Ridiculous draconian law. A stray has started to come into the house, and now I am concerned that if I take it to vet they will insist on this. I actually think its pretty unethical to inject a cat with a chip (even worse castration/spaying).
This is a problem that so many people will face. We all want to care for displaced or stray cats but what happens when a cat is taken to a vet and it is discovered that it is not microchipped?

It was my birthday too ❤ This legislation has really got my back up, cats have the 'right to roam' and you don't have to report them if knocked over on the road yet we are being told it's the law to microchip them? I asked the vet this question and they said they get a lot of cats in who have been in accidents and are deceased or needing attention and can't trace the owner. Really? All my 4 cats have collars and name tags and I keep spare ones as they do come off. The 2 kittens, now aged 2, are both chipped, had it done when they were neutered/spayed. The 2 older cats aren't chipped. I'm pretty much housebound these days and now have to traipse up to the vets with 2 stressed out cats to be chipped for no valid reason I can think of, and pay for it! The vet told me ...'we give a free health check at the same time...' translated that means... '...we'll flog you worm and flea treatment and try to flog you our overpriced special food too... '. People are going to be dumping cats. I know somebody who has 12 cats! She has a rural property and people leave them there for her to take in... I can see her with many more arriving. You have made a lot of valid points. Vets have become sales reps for pharmaceutical companies is it no wonder they are under investigation for over pricing and their stance of not scanning the microchip of every pet that’s comes through their practice is unacceptable
My concern is the feeling of Big Brother interfeering in people's privacy. My main concern is if/when the next 'pandemic' is launched that any mention of cat carrying transfer could justify a cull. There was a momentary thought of doing this in 2020, when the talk was that cats carried covid. They would have to break down the door to get to our animals.
Very interesting Colin.(Happy Birthday BTW!) You are right. You mention the revenue involved. My daughter bought an older dog and when she came to change the owner details she was charged £24!
I think the authorities and those who stand to gain the most, are playing down the cost of mocrochipping claiming its not that much to pay for peace of mind but I suspect the price will increase over the next 12 months and no one will be able to challenge the price rises.

I agree with most points and especially the last one regarding cats being 'disowned' due to the legislation. The whole thing was a stupid idea as far as whose going to check anyway. It was also in response to the death of cats and not knowing the owner and owners never knowing what happened. However, that relied on owners understanding that the chip may or may not be registered by the vet and owners needing to go and set up an online account with the chip company and link the chip to them. I know I did cat rescue and this was one of the problem areas and indeed one I didnt realise until I was dealing with the chip company and having problems with people losing their cat and not being able to find them on the records! The other issue which the govt have failed in is that with this law they should now have adopted the cat as one of the animals to be reported in the event of a road traffic accident.That is one of the biggest failings in this legislation.
I totally agree with you it would have been a simple exercise to introduce a requirement for all pet handling oprganisation, rescues, vets etc to check a cat on first contact for a microchip otherwise wants the point of making microchipping mandatory if scanning is optional it just doesn't make sense
How on earth can this microchip law be enforced? IT CAN'T.

There clearly is a big brother aspect to this legislation especially as so much private data will end up in the hands of the pharmaceutical industry
