Excellent video Colin! Personally I also always tend to point out to people that even if any of these scents would work to attract their cat home it would still likely be ineffective. Cats do have a strong sense of smell, but not quite on a canine level. They wouldn't notice unless they were still relatively close by.

Ridiculous draconian law. A stray has started to come into the house, and now I am concerned that if I take it to vet they will insist on this. I actually think its pretty unethical to inject a cat with a chip (even worse castration/spaying).

Beautiful dog. I wish I had a European adder too as an easy first venomous snake. Copperhead’s are prettier though so I’ll start with one of those.

Our cat has been missing 7 days. We have done all of the things, but it seems like mosf success stories end with "after three weeks, he showed up in our frint porch." This is depressing. I feel I have failed my cat. There are at least a dozen outdoor cats just on my block. Hiw can j evef find mine? It just seems impossible

My concern is the feeling of Big Brother interfeering in people's privacy. My main concern is if/when the next 'pandemic' is launched that any mention of cat carrying transfer could justify a cull. There was a momentary thought of doing this in 2020, when the talk was that cats carried covid. They would have to break down the door to get to our animals.

Happy Birthday for the 10th June! It was my birthday too ❤ This legislation has really got my back up, cats have the 'right to roam' and you don't have to report them if knocked over on the road yet we are being told it's the law to microchip them? I asked the vet this question and they said they get a lot of cats in who have been in accidents and are deceased or needing attention and can't trace the owner. Really? All my 4 cats have collars and name tags and I keep spare ones as they do come off. The 2 kittens, now aged 2, are both chipped, had it done when they were neutered/spayed. The 2 older cats aren't chipped. I'm pretty much housebound these days and now have to traipse up to the vets with 2 stressed out cats to be chipped for no valid reason I can think of, and pay for it! The vet told me ...'we give a free health check at the same time...' translated that means... '...we'll flog you worm and flea treatment and try to flog you our overpriced special food too... '. People are going to be dumping cats. I know somebody who has 12 cats! She has a rural property and people leave them there for her to take in... I can see her with many more arriving. Yes, the figures do not add up. However, I have never trusted the government when correlating and analysing facts and figures. It always becomes subjective when the government spin the figures in their favour. This new legislation looks good on paper but in practice, it is going to fail as it has not been throughly thought out. I worry that the additional costs will end up burdening the smaller cat charities who may not be able to sustain the additional costs of microchipping or indeed changing the ownership details on the microchip. Some cat charities may be forced to close.

How on earth can this microchip law be enforced? IT CAN'T.

I absolutely agree with everything you say and am fully aware that this act is material for Rip Off Britain On the other hand … begs the question … what else is there currently that provides a glimmer of hope of of us being reunited with our adored pets if they go missing? I have 9 cats … all microchipped as kittens when they received their second vaccination … all registrations are up to date … all are house cats with safe outside space in the garden … One cat managed to get out 2 years ago … he was missing for 8 weeks … he was found on a Moor sone distance from where I live … he was reunited with me because a kind young man recognised him from his Breed and photographs on the site of a local FB page … my cat was close to death and infact nearly died a few times … I got him back purely through the kindness of the young man who found him But the chip gave him and each cat who has one … provided of course the registration is up to date … an extra chance of coming home … or worst case scenario if found RIP … the opportunity for his Owner to have closure knowing at least what has happened to their lost and much loved pet But the chip does provide an enhanced chance of finding your cat if something goes wrong and they go missing … however slim that might be … and is a price I am prepared to pay both for the sake of my adored cats and my own peace of mind … that if my cat or cats are missing … I have done everything I can to increase their chances of getting back home A suggestion to the Powers that be would be that for every cat or kitten chipped … a percentage of a capped fee the service providers charge be donated to the Cat rescue charities but that in itself is a huge increase in wirk all of which also would have to be funded There seems to be little alternative 🤷🏼

I agree with most points and especially the last one regarding cats being 'disowned' due to the legislation. The whole thing was a stupid idea as far as whose going to check anyway. It was also in response to the death of cats and not knowing the owner and owners never knowing what happened. However, that relied on owners understanding that the chip may or may not be registered by the vet and owners needing to go and set up an online account with the chip company and link the chip to them. I know I did cat rescue and this was one of the problem areas and indeed one I didnt realise until I was dealing with the chip company and having problems with people losing their cat and not being able to find them on the records! The other issue which the govt have failed in is that with this law they should now have adopted the cat as one of the animals to be reported in the event of a road traffic accident.That is one of the biggest failings in this legislation.

The gov is overstepping boundaries here, seems like they just want a reason to take more money out of the pockets of the struggling public. One day its dogs, cats then you.

Don't forget, they tried to do this with the covid vaccine too on us humans. I ignored them and refused it.all sorts of drama. Turning people against each other. The dogs also, as said now the cats.its pure greed.i thought right I will get my cats chipped, and the little dog. Microchipping woman said its 10 pounds you have to register each of them online. No mention of any registration fees.tried to register them on the smart chip website and was told its was 9.95 to register them and they was updating there site.was fuming the chipper never was honest about the fees,citizens advice then trading standards we have to warn her.if she does it again we will look into it....rubbish once is enough. Now in between trying to phone the company impossible and emailing, same old if they reply we will look into it and the rest of the rubbish they DOUBLED the cost or registering them to 20 each pet.as far as I can see,there is no register for people that chip pets,so basically anyone can stick one of these chips into your pet without a valid list or record of them being fit,and fully qualified and trained to do so.on top of this mess I trued to register them and too,of them was apparently registered!!?,BUT nor in my name either. There a joke told them still the generated reply, said past the cut off date its a minefield. If you are a genuine pet detective. I will share the stress and lies of these rip of merchants.it alway was all about money not pet welfare xx

The truth is that Vets are going to be the bad guys to doll this out and enforce. You won't be allowed to see a vet without your cat having one, and if your cat is sick or needs to see a vet for a yearly check up they will be refused. That means your pet insurance will become invalid as they don’t have a chip. It’s very clever and sinister …how they are getting the vets to enforce this !! I think it’s wrong I dont want my cat to have it. Funny the UK government always saw cats as a free animal because they move around, now it’s changed. I feel there is a sinister reason behind this all, to get people comfortable with micro chips. Next it be mandatory for all UK children 😢

my next door neighbours stolen my catsammy by surrounding him when they moved out but police cannot help me as i did not get to chip him and do not know their names. But police must know who they are as they hold massive parties taking over the streets where you live and the mother is not a nice a person she has a go at everyone instead of being neighbourly. Our fence between us is high but they shouldof known he is mine. He lived here before they moved in. He was a stray, I did everything legally n they did nothing right. I adopted him n he was due for chipping. his known me 6 yrs .he loved me soooo much he would fly to me everyday with huge smile. giving me lots of love. There must be a way of finding out thier names for the police and to find them. I just want them to return him his not a stray his mine. He chose me with devotion. I never had to force him to want me but they did they surrounded him. I have posted him all over social media. His been gone since march 2nd 2024 moved out of haig road ub8 3ee. They are young black family nothing to do with race is just all i have. They are noticeable by there huge arguements with neighbours n huge parties taking over the streets.

Excellent advice. Colin has been invaluable in assisting with the legal recovery of my stolen microchipped injured Maine coon cat. This has been an ongoing case with verbal warnings being given to the thief. Now, moving to an active court case with full media coverage. Determined to get my cat back. I know where my cat is being hidden and the unacceptable conditions he is living in. Will keep Colin updated.

Excellent, sound and straightforward advice. The key is not to overcomplicate searches and retain a logical approach. Our search strayed too far and wide, as we concluded our cat had been stolen, when infact it had been hiding in a neighbour's garage. We were searching all over the south of England when in fact he was 50 yds away. Colin and Molly brought sense and logic back to our search.

Absolutely well founded and accurate advice from Colin, who speaks from both experience and an innate behavioural understanding of cats and dogs. Our experience in losing an indoor cat was that we initially widened to search area too much, assuming it may have roamed way further than it turned out that it did. The ending wasn't a happy one but COlin did enable us to bring closure. He and Molly are exceptional.

Colin and his search dog Molly helped me search for my cat when he went missing a couple of years ago. Whilst we did not find him, he helped me enormously with so much advice. He was able to categorically say that my cat was no longer in the area so I needn’t worry about searching there. He taught me so much about understanding a cats territory. After 3 long weeks we got our cat back, it turned out he had caught a ride in a delivery van or car to a neighbouring village so Colin was right. Since he has been back we have fitted him with a tracker which has given us so much info on his territory, all of which backed up exactly what Colin had said. This guy knows his stuff!

Excellent advice..will keep you updated on my current legal action for the theft of my cat. Determined to get my stolen injured cat back.
