Yeah but the result was absolutely stunning for their budget. And I guess it was a great way of repaying his mum for all that she's done for him (I'm assuming she was a great mum).

I think Maureen was really smart to put a small 2-seater table by the window, leaving space for a sitting area. Most of the time, her family won’t be there and she can eat and sit overlooking her beautiful garden. I love her taste in furnishing, too. Those jewel colours in her lounge were gorgeous. Well done to her son for doing this for her and I would think that the things he learned on this build will enhance his career going forward.

Love so much of the design ideas with one caveat: Stop dissing carports! Not to be mean, but it is clear you haven't been old or struggling in bad weather to bring in the groceries (or minor car repair)! It is a high value addition that is very practical.
Yep totally agree. If there’s no lock-up garage, I wouldn’t consider the property. I think beeny is thinking about balancing cost and space issues, but there always seems to be the space and yet she often advises against. Crazy

The no-window people have the most beautiful setting! Leaving those bifold doors to open onto the garden - around here that would result in swarms of mosquitos, wasps, spiders, flies, even squirrels, etc in the house. Don't they have bugs there? I hope Maureen, at her age, isn't going to struggle to wash those acres of floors.
Ad Hc, It's wonderful in UK you can lay on the grass and listen to the insects droning and not get bitten. Don't have mosquitoes there. I'm being bitten here in Spain and not even hot yet.
The UK is very cold. Bugs are not much of a problem.
If Maureen's house was for everyone, why is it only Arby making all the sacrifices? She ran through everyone the house is for, which was quiet a few, yet only one person is doing all the work. Bless your heart Arby, hope your spouse know how lucky they are.

Wow amazing job on Maureen's build, love the clean line design of the kitchen (only no would be the glossy finish fingerprint and dirt showing dark finish, could have went with light colored cabinets even mat white metal) and I agree keeping the back as a sitting room or smaller LR far more use vs. being a dining room as most of the time it will be just her. Her son, super talented and should be very proud of his accomplishment.
Seriously? People don't realise they have no windows in their rooms (and no-one during the planning process pointed it out), and a builder doesn't know about power lines vs cranes. Even I know that they don't mix, and I don't even know how to use a drop saw. Having said that, Maureen's home is beautiful.
Yeah, things like that reek of manufactured drama. Not as bad as some of the things you see on American shows, but still kinda annoying.
Arby did a fantastic job! He should be very proud of his work.
I am really not trying to be rude, but how do you forget about windows? 🤨🤨 I have an unfinished basement and I've been thinking over how to finish it and literally the top 2 things I have on my mind are making the layout fit around the windows and plumbing access points. Because windows are a big deal and each room needs one... I'm really surprised that someone could just forget about windows 😳
Surprising, the things some people get used to, others might think strange or even downright detrimental.

RB is a hero😊 A bit tight in the kitchen dining area , I would have gone for a shorter island area to get in and around it - with an option to put a barstool at one end . Lower the letterbox windows too.. Not too keen on those sliding doors end to end- had them, they can get v stiff after winter. I would have put two fixed glass panes each end with window seat - and smaller sliding doors. Still very nice effort:)
yep, it's a little tight in the kitchen, and i really cant stand kitchen islands altogether... they look so dated so soon and just seem to take up so much space...
What is that WEIRD CARTOON ART on Maureen's walls???? Arby is a lovely son! Like mine who renovated everything in his own home. Lucky mom.
The ex bungalow is pretty stunning, but I really don't understand why an older (single?) woman, with grown-up children, would want such a huge space and a staircase. My grandma had a somewhat small house, but all twenty of us loved being crammed into, during the holidays!!

@@alyfferalves593 I'm not judging, just wondering. Bigger house means more maintenance and stairs can be an issue when you're getting older, that's all. I guess I'm also used to smaller houses in my country anyway and I always wonder about the two living rooms, 10 bathrooms and 5 bedrooms for just one person.
But if she's happy, that's all that matters.
Maybe her children have longer stays. They know it better.
Arby pretty much explained towards the end that they didn’t really have a house to congregate in. Seems like a tight family that wants to visit their mom/grandma every now & then. People actually have different ideals on retirement. Some want to downsize & others actually prefer to upsize. I guess it all depends on what kind of lifestyle they also want to live. Who knows? Maybe Maureen also got lots of friends & love to entertain.

Just curious perhaps a British thing...but why when you notice you have no windows would you then put in 2 micro windows at the top of the room with no view to outside? I heard them say they put them up high to let in daylight for a longer period of the day. But why not a bigger window altogether to get more light and be able to see outside? Part of the home's appeal was the outside areas....
The dining room windows were on the side of the house. The only view would be of the brick wall of the neighbours house.
@@Nazpazaz While I get that, my kitchen window is at the side and shows onto the neighbors house (a brick wall). However, there is still a small grassy area to see and birds land on the fencing. You receive much more light from a full window and you can also see the sky and clouds.....
Just seems like a big window would have been a better choice if for no other reason than more light coming in. I guess to each his own. Everyone has their own individual taste.

It is a British thing. Side aspect windows (that is, windows facing a neighbour's property rather than the street or garden) have strict privacy requirements. As a general rule, they must either be above 1.7m from the floor or be heavily glazed and non-opening. People _can_ argue the point with the planning office that their particular window would not overlook anything private, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

Wow! That bungalow conversion is amazing! Very inspiring as i live in a bungalow and would love to build something simular. I also agree with Sarah regarding the carport and I'd rather have more living and bedroom space as they have the room to have a massive drive way in my humble opinion that's what I would do and if they still wanted a carport they could use some awnings or canopy to achieve it...
I wouldn’t like to use that glass staircase whilst wearing a skirt.
Frosted glass would still let light in without being so revealing

How do you move heavy furniture up those glass stairs without worrying about somebody dropping something and everybody crashing down another story?
reflective surfaces everywhere so literally every fingerprint and speck of dust is visible, is there architecture that also takes the upkeep of such spaces into account?

Sarah said it’s quite common, so I guess it’s not something they’re looking for. They’re really just making sure it’s safe and doesn’t break rules.
Love this program , but wish it was split to two 30 min. episodes for each house...find it complex to go back and forth.

Sounds like he was a builder/carpenter not necessarily a project manager, which is a hugely different skill set. Massive learning curve but with extra $, he got there. Thankfully. Beautiful job by the time it was done.

The Victorian terrace house is like a fish bowl,with no Victorian character,the stairs looks so dangerous with the glass

if the inspector had a row with the spouse in the morning that proper paper could have had a big denied stamped on it that heavens it turned out great

I was thinking the same thing, they seemed to builiding within weeks. Surely it needs planning approval and that can take months and even longer than that at other times, over a year depending on the build and the plans.

We are looking at all the light coming in from the windows and the have all the lights on I don’t get it
(40:59) Beautiful room but poorly laid out. No lamps, which means it's overhead lighting: HORRIBLE. It makes you tired. Light is one thing that doesn't respond to gravity! You need side tables with lamps on them, or floor lamps (best: Combination of both) to bring the light source down to the MIDDLE of the room. THAT creates a cosy feeling. Also, here the furniture has been arranged in what Nate Berkus refers to as 'circle the wagons'; in a big circle around the edges of the room. There's no focal point. Instead, there ought to be groupings.

Planning Offices would not give permission for an extension to be built without the necessary natural light so was the extension illegally built? Also I find it hard to believe that anyone could be that stupid!
The table in the kitchen looks squeezed in. That amount of money over and you don't put the kitchen table in that big room leading to the garden? Seems odd.

i alway,s think that on these property programmes,you got two old parents who say our kids have left home and we have had enough of the city,we are off to live our dream in the country and buy a 5 bed house with an acre of land and a windmill or something just incase there kids wanna stay..well,i think there kids are prob thinking..cheers,you get this now when we looked ourselves all day when you were both at work,in a city and now we have all left home and grown up u wanna live with us?mmmm?when they are older they gotta pay n clean and maintain it all,prob only use 2 rooms? apart from arbi..i think he will be moving back in with his mama..he is a darling ,love his face when he gets the planning permission whilst doing the work he hasnt meant to have started..lol..like,cheers,i have been waiting and waiting for that!! lol,love himx

West facing windows are actually hotter than south facing because of the lower angle of the sun. The sun gets further into the house in summer and it becomes really miserable. Feng Shui acknowledges this...
The British really are far behind on optimal design both visually and other considerations.

Back at you! Lol! Actually what I am doing is attempting to provoke better design, contrary to your efforts to let crap muddle by. The bad is much more common than the good.
Watched a lot of British architects and designers who are continuously creating disappointing designs that are insensitive to the homeowners wishes, and aesthetics in general. That is in part a criticism of British television shows, the British education system, and for general lack of thoughtful critique on such expensive changes.
I have seen some good British design, but it is hard to come by.

@B uppy Britain has different climate it's cooler through out year. Feng shui might work for Chinese but it might not be worth considering everywhere.
I like these videos, but I don’t know why she is so against carports and garages. She talks so many people out of them. Sometimes it’s nice to park inside away from the weather
