I am amazed how Beeny manages to keep her sh*t together in front of some of these numpties.
The guy that went with the new build- completely over rode his wife's desires. You could see it every time she tried to speak up. That ended up his house and she has not had enough of him... yet. The other couple was adorable. They worked together and are equally pleased. This could be titled The Renovation Relationship Show! LOL

The transformation of the sixties house was stunning. The fact that they were prepared to listen to Sarah and take her advice was game-changing.
And their view is also stunning. Absolutely well done all round!!! They can get much more just for the view alone.
I like how the host of this programme always manages to have positive impression of people's renovations even when they do stupid things or have ghastly taste and the result is worse than if they had listened to her. She's always respectful and able to take pleasure in the homeowners' pleasure.

The second house is stunning 😮😮😮 wow. The huge windows, the beautiful cohesive facade, that suspended fireplace, the lighting and front door, the unique yet functional bedroom layout, the open floor plan, etc.
👏 👏 👏 👏 I don't like some of the specific choices (like the purple stools and accent wallpaper in the play room) but the layout and overall design of the house is one of the best ever seen on this show. Not to mention the amazing views they have! Dream property for sure.
Two couples where the guys could not be more different in likability.
Mark and Becky ruined that 200 year old home. The poor house is now a boring white box with cheap looking doors and light fixtures. 😟
17,000 pounds spent on windows that don’t work as well insulating the street noise and also rob the 200 year old landmark of one of the last shreds of its historical past… I don’t even know what to say.
Absolutely love the chandeliers in Greg and Jo's house. Love this series too.
Historic houses belong in the hands on those who will caretake them into future generations. Preserving a few feature beams is not preserving a legacy.
I'm sure others renovating their old home would have bought those windows. It's almost criminal to destroy a 200 yo home like that. It's really sad

@@gladitsnotme So wrong! We live in a 250 year old house in NH, USA. We have kept it as old as possible and would NEVER put in "modern" windows. We watch so many BBC 'home' shows and are sick at how people there always take the 'old' out of ancient properties. Why don't they just buy a newer "open plan" home with their huge kitchens, etc.? Disgusting that they ruin old houses instead! We wish we had the means to move to the UK. We would buy a little medieval thatched cottage, and all the fireplaces, beams, windows, etc., would stay. And NO 'wood stove' would be added to the fireplaces either! We would cherish it and preserve it.

The house with a wonderful view is as far the best renovation on this series. They had made right decision buying an ugly house with a stunning surroundings and they managed to make the best of it!
Old moulded windows sound nice in someone else's house: hard to clean, not safe, not cheap in terms of heating etc.
I would choose different ones but still I can clearly see why they had changed them.
Gred and Jo's house is definitely worth more than the first couple's house
Greg and Jo did an amazing job. Spectacular! And in a quiet setting with an incredible veiw.... love their bedroom especially.

Greg and Jo performed like royalty. Truly kings and queens.
Both great transformations. The new windows open and match the added ones. They kept the curved opening, still has cottage charm. I would add tall steel trellises to add privacy and reduce toxic emissions from vehicles. Would also provide a bit of barrier from car smashing into your home. It is hard to find perfect property in perfect location for the right price. Away from the road would have raised the price. Odd they didn't mention the solar panels on the roof of the house on the river. With such a large house, glad to see that, as well as fireplace in center of space. Would love to bathe in that tub with that view. I hope they get a lot of use from it!
Imagine buying a 200-year-old cottage and turning it into a characterless new build. Why not just a new build to begin with? I think the guy had a problem with Sarah, his whole body language was defiant and arrogant to any of her suggestions, jutting out his chin like a belligerent brat. He couldn't accept her advice because he was weighed down by that chip on his shoulder. The other house though was a triumph.
That northern couple were total philistines.
Why do people take beautiful period features and totally destroy the look of a period property. Using period features with a modern feel is lovely. They may as well have just bought a new build.
liana collet Because if you're extending a house, it's easier and cheaper to make the old part of the house look like the new part of the house than to make the new part of the house look like the old part of the house. You can't recreate 19th century charm from Home Depot.

helena neumann Well, old houses are common in the UK, lol. Plus, most people don't house hunt with doing a huge renovation in mind. They buy it, live in it for a while, and then come up with a plan to renovate.

I think had they removed some walls, reworked the layout, could have worked. I'm not a professional though.
Oh my god ! Why didn’t they just bowl the cottage and buy new ! There’s no resemblance to a character build . I’m not saying it’s not nice it’s just like a regular new build -sad

Where's the preservation board that always rules on this kind of thing? A shame. If Mark wanted to destroy all the lovely period details he should have bought a new, giant, featureless McMansion. And what's with putting bathtubs in bedrooms? I think the idea is different than the reality. Otherwise, the '60's house is stunning. That deck on the lake is priceless.
A bathtub in the bedroom? Ridiculous. The damp. The cold air in a larger room. The lack of privacy. Oh, and a BATHTUB in the bedroom.

Mark and Becky ended up with a new build all the way through. The only thing I agree with was changing the windows in the old part, since it would have been almost impossible to match the old windows in the new part of the house. Also, new windows are much easier and safer to keep clean if the went for double hung sash the tip in. The rest is just bland. Personally I absolutely HATE open plan living with no separate formal spaces. If I am setting a fancy table for a large number and preparing a 5 or 6 course dinner, I do not want my guests seeing the mess left behind after each course is served. I am certainly not going to be doing a clean up between courses while my guests are waiting, and even more, not while they are watching me do it. In a way, I am surprised they got planning permission to a renovation like that on a building that old. Obviously it was not Grade 2 listed, or it would have been a total non-starter.
Greg and Jo, on the other hand, created precisely what they set out to do. They were not closed to other ideas, took them on board and made the house perfect for themselves while also creating a home that will be very desirable should they ever choose to sell. That back garden is simply perfect, and that view is amazing. The house is a real credit to their vision and the hard graft Greg put into it. Not my personal style, but it is a beautiful result. The kitchen layout is extremely efficient and will be easy to work in. Well done, that couple.
Most people aren’t doing fancy 5 or 6 course dinners though.
The house on the water really was a stunning conversion - at any price. Only thing wrong would be the pendulous fire, I'd be petrified the kids would end up in it, that really is dangerous, but otherwise quite incredible. Just a shame production didn't show us more of the details rather than focusing on a few aspects of the build.
I SO AGREE!! They waste our time with idiotic repetitive drama when I would MUCH PREFER to see more of the design details, EVERY TIME!
what is the purpose of putting a bathtub in their bedroom? why not rearrange the other rooms to have a bathroom with the view
To have a bath in private with no distractions of kids wanting to use the bathroom?
@@jaybee4118 there’s something called an on suite bathroom which could be done here instead of a having a tub in the bedroom that looks tacky
@@Kev4Kev it’s not remotely tacky. Maybe consider different people have different tastes? You asked what’s the point, not is it attractive. I answered about the point you actually made. Having a bath in the bedroom isn’t to everyone’s taste, but difference is what makes the world far more interesting. And also, this way they get a huge space to have a bath with a huge view, not a bathroom which is never going to be as luxurious. The kids aren’t likely to care in the slightest if there’s a view, so my question is, why not have it where it is?
@@jaybee4118 That makes zero sense you could surely build a bathroom that is as luxurious, second its not practical the carpet will get wet all the time if the carpet was hardwood or a tiled floor it would be more sensible but the carpet in there is stupid. Theres a reason you dont see carpet in bathrooms.
@@Kev4Kev You wouldn't build a bathroom with that MASSIVE window in it. Besides, why waste that view on a bathroom where you don't spend much time?! Seems daft to me.
The carpet isn't under the bath because it's on a boarded platform. You can see there's at least a foot and a half of boards all around it. I don't know how you have a bath, but when I do I don't soak the floor every time, rarely in fact. So the carpet wouldn't get more than a few splashes from time to time. If it can't take that then no one should ever have carpet. There is a reason you don't see carpet in bathrooms, it's about the toilets and faecal matter, and how damp bathrooms get from daily showers. An occasional bath in the bedroom with a carpet is absolutely fine. Also, no carpet in the bathroom is part of what makes it less luxurious. That's my point.
Mark’s conventional taste in windows is just as boring as his ill fitting white sunglasses. But I’m more upset over the boring new oak doors and glossy floors and kitchen, open spaces with no soul. Why not keep some small rooms on one side shielding the new spaces facing the garden from the road?
Why not move? I can't figure why anyone would spend so much money to remodel a house on a busy thoroughfare.
There was a beautiful thatched roof cottage off of one side of the main house, but they took it down. It's upsetting that they changed the 200 year old house into a contemporary one. They should have sold the house to someone who would have appreciated it and bought a house in the suburbs.
HappyDays, I think the thatched cottage belonged to their dream house. It was side by side with the house they aspired to. It wasn't pulled down.

brillo obrill Well the main consensus here is everyone preferred the second house. The one on the river. Why would you have a free expert telling you things and not listen to them. Because you think you know better that's why. She always tries to tell them in a nice way. That husband needed a good slap across the back of his neck. Smart arse.

Mark & Becky just wanted to be on tv! Lol.. It’s still a beautiful transformation but it could have been done in a much better way with respect to the period features. The way Mark threw away most of Sarah’s advice was just painful to watch! Sarah was obviously disappointed but I salute her for keeping her calm & respecting the homeowners’ decision.
Greg & Jo’s home transformation was spectacular. I may not agree on some little details but overall it was great & magazine-worthy!
Watching all of these shows surprises me that brick wall all knocked down so easily. I thing in the U.S. you try to avoid the brick wall unless you have money or absolutely can't avoid it.

cheskydivision I think you'll find the bricks will be sold on or reused. You can buy reclaimed bricks. And the door if it hadn't been burned would be taken out of the skip ( with permission ) and sold to a builder's yard. Nothing gets wasted in UK. Not after being bombed in the war.
If that was an example of some of Greg's work in the 'before' house, then it wasn't a great advert for his building! Plug sockets hanging out the wall with a baby around?

Khadijah Ladan, just reading the comments on the upgrading your house series with Sarah Beeny. Did you get your chandelier ? If you are in UK try some me of the big department stores as it's a modern one. Try John Lewis, Debenhams or look at some of the lightning shops on line. You will get similar. Antique, or charity shops would have older ones but still lovely. Good luck with your search.
One of your last shows you were not even able to see that they would need to install a retaining wall, so they were punched with a 10,000 over budget expense. What service are you really providing? I would have hired a solicitor and you would have bought my retaining wall!

This woman HATES garages. This is the second time I've seen her making fun of garages and destroying a plan that features one. She doesn't even drive so maybe that's why she's clueless about garages?
They destroyed a beautiful cottage. They could have just bought a new house and left the cottage to someone who likes historic properties.
All these builds remove the garage making your one mode of transport a bigger liability
I don't think a garage is that much of a game changer personally
I live in a cold climate. A house without a garage is very undesirable and will make the house harder to sell. People here don't want to scrape off a foot or two of snow from their cars. A house with a single car garage is a liability and one with only a carport is, too. Houses that have converted garages aren't too popular.
I live in a middle class neighborhood and all of the homes have two or three car garages. We're excited because the house we bought a few months ago has a three car garage. It feels luxurious!

The thing with UK garages is that none of them are actually big enough to fit a car. They’re there for storage purposes only. So might as well use a shed for that.
@@tamielizabethallaway2413 We do both with our garages here in the U.S. --Cram in tools next to the cars. Some men have their woodworking shops in their garages and park their vehicles in the driveway like where you live.

I live 5,000 ft+ above sea level in the Rocky Mountains in Utah, U.S.A. Roads don't close here. A foot of snow is like nothing to drivers here. (The state will close roads in the highest parts of canyons, when the driving conditions are extremely dangerous.) I don't drive in the snow because it's too scary for me.
In all of my son's growing up years he never missed school for "snow days" even when he was in elementary school and the snow came up to his thighs. The only day school was closed was when the furnace broke down.
When we moved to our house 5 years ago we had 6' of snow in 6 weeks. After shoveling after each storm the snow was almost as high as my head where I'd tossed it. The snowplow couldn't get up our street and had to back down without finishing the plowing. My husband still drove the 50 miles to (and from) work. He has a truck with 4 wheel drive.
The drivers are crazy here and speed in the snow and ice. It can be pretty dangerous and terrifying--especially on the freeways. The worst thing is being behind a big tractor trailer because they spray snow over your car and block your view.
I grew up in the Washington, D.C. suburbs. If it snowed 2" everyone panicked and school was canceled. It was the same way when I lived in Portland, Oregon.
One April day it snowed 13" overnight. I had to go outside and knock all of the snow off of my fruit trees because the limbs were almost on the ground. A short time after the sun came up the snow melted and it was spring again!

I don't know why people get nostalgic about period properties. 200 years ago women were not allowed to own property. Kitchens were separate because poor maids had to slave away for the masters without being seen. Smaller windows because heating was only with firewood that didn't last throughout the night. We are in the 21st century, why not modernize your home to suit the times we live in? Happy for the couple for making the changes they wanted.

The houses can be seen as more beautiful even if society was not arranged in morden democracy..200 houses often stand healthy. Houses built in 1970-80 are frequently torn down because of mold and fungi. Compared to the 1940s homes we have several minutes less available to be able to get out if we have a fire in our houses.
Nobody had a problem with the ugly modern house being razed. If you don't like old quality buildings, DON'T BUY THEM. Buy an ugly new house with nothing to value, and go for it. I hope that ghastly couple are happy there, forever. So they don't destroy any other charming old place.

WHY would someone build a house over a well? Nutcases everywhere throughout places and times 🤣
At one point in history, a well inside the house was a luxury - like indoor plumbing. You didn't have to slog out into a farmyard to draw water constantly, but could get water without leaving the house. In time, a 'high-end kitchen' would have had a pump handle right on the 'countertop' next to a sink - so you could pump water into the sink or into a bucket under a tap in the sink. A huge improvement for the women in the family, since it was the woman's job to draw water. Also, a well naturally keeps things cold. The old house was a dairy - and a dairy needs a cold room to store milk while the cream rises to the top and to store butter. No doubt the room with the well is where they stored the milk to keep it fresh, possibly even in tubs let down into the well. When my father was growing up on a farm, they had a pump house over the well, and it was always cool - summer and winter. It's where they always put the day's milking to keep it cold before there was refrigeration. Indoor water and a natural refrigerator before mains water and electric fridges - THAT is why someone would build a house over a well.
