I once played catch with Steve Young on an airport ramp in Provo Utah. I threw a football to him on a dare, he not only threw it back...but did so for 10 minutes with me and one of the ramp workers. I was a fan from that moment. He eventually had to get on his private jet...but before he did, he signed the football we played catch with. On a side note, the dude threw a HEAVY ball...my hands hurt for the rest of that day. I cant even begin to imagine what a actual in-game throw would be like!
As a niner fan I grew up watching Steve Young. He's honestly my favorite QB of all time. Much respect to Joe Montana and Tom Brady but I just absolutely loved Steve Young man. He was so unpredictable lol.
Growing up a Niners Fan born in 1980 going to candlestick as a kid i agree. Joe Cool was the man but Steve Young was my favorite. Wish he couldve played more for us. He was fearless. Tough Son of a gun lol

Steve Young’s unpredictability was a strength but also a weakness. The radio clip “Joe Montana wouldn’t be running in the first place!” illustrated how Young’s unpredictability could work against him.
Steve took a cerebral approach to the position, and worked hard in all facets of the game. Unfortunately his style of playing, and a late opportunity with the Niners, led to a short career... Should have one three straight MVP's.

I was at that 1994 eagles game when Steve got benched . We got blew out but there was 50 to 60 of us fans waiting for players to come out the player exit gate and he was the last one that came out . He gave everyone of us a autograph at 13 years old I never forgot that . It's crazy because me and my friend saw tim hardway in the parking lot it was Tim his friend and me and my friend I said can I please have your autograph tim I have your jersey . He straight up told me I don't do autographs it crushed me I never wore that jersey again he was my favorite warrior . But it just goes to show you how these athletes make a impact on your life . I will forever be grateful for Steve young and how humble he was . To wait and sign every fans autograph left at the stadium was so cool. Especially after a big loss to the eagles and the argument with George

I may be a Giants fan, but as a lefty Steve Young is one of my favorite quarterbacks. To see him do so well in a righty dominated sport is inspiring.
Not only was he a legend in this game but probably the one of the classiest men to ever play in the NFL!!!

Steve Young led the league in passer rating 6 times, the most all time. For reference, Aaron Rodgers the passer rating king according to some people has only led in that category twice. He also had 7 100+ passer rating season which is absolutely absurd considering the era he played in. John Elway finished with a 79 career passer rating. Jim Kelly had 1, 100+ passer rating season and finished with 84 career passer rating. Joe Montana had 3 100+ passer rating seasons. Dan Marino had 1.
Steve Young is the most efficient QB in NFL History adjusted by era.
Good point but defenses got better at defending the pass and defensive players became a lot faster due to the heavy passing game that slowly made it to the NFL.

@@cam42704 It's about comparing him to his peers. Steve Young stood out in that era with numbers that would fit right in with 2020. And there's no question this is an easier era to play quarterback. The league average passer rating is now mid 90s. Steve Young's career ended with injuries he sustained from hits to the QB. It was much harder to pass the football in the 90s. See that hit to Jerry? 12:19? That would have been a hit to a defenseless receiver and the drive would have continued, probably with another TD pass.
@@cam42704 nfl rules have always changed to favor offense and scoring. Even if you look at stats just 10 and 20 years before Young, you’ll see the trend in each years best qb’s stats.

He was the best rushing QB in the NFL and that was during Randall Cunningham's tenure. It wasn't flash and speed (although he was fast) as much as it was smarts and grit. He knew where tacklers were going and made the microsecond decision to avoid them. And then wasn't afraid to take a hit.

Man the 80s and 90s the niners have a good offensive line
The irony is when Seifert benched him in the massacre by the Eagles in 1994 the line had struggled all year trying to protect him. It took him changing his throws at Detroit for the win streak and protection to get going.
I really loved how this guy played the game! I hated the 49ers but respected Young’s game tremendously! 49ers were so freakin lucky to have had back-to-back Hall of Fame quarterbacks!!! ☮️🖖🏽

One of my favorite QBs. I was always a fan of Montana and Rice then it went on to Young and Rice. Those days were classic. Not to mention one of the best scramblers too.

Hard to find anyone who handles themselves as classy as those guys and man were they tough as nails! To be that elite and still humble down to earth ppl is so cool. Wish them health and happiness. Cowboy fan here from the bay area.. All my family loved the 9ers. I remember those Dallas SF rivalries like yesterday. I couldn't stand SF lol. I never understood how this guy could make some of the runs he did. He ran in seeming slow motion but did his thing. All time great QB.

Steve was a true leader and a fantastic QB for the Niners. His willingness and ability to run the ball himself was outstanding. His motivational speeches were awesome as well. Purdy is now starting to run the ball more like Steve. He looks up to both Great Forty Niner QB's Montana and Young. The Superbowl is tonight. I pray the 49ers win. May Brock Purdy pass and run both like Joe Montana and Steve Young as he becomes the next QB legend for the SF Forty Niners. - GO NINERS !!!

man all those hits he took back in the day....i wish the O-line was better for him during those days although his last superbowl was a dream team for sure...young and montana back to back was just a blessing for us fans back in the day they were both freakin amazing leaders.
I still love this guy. When I lived in LA, his LA Express team banked at my bank and that's when I started to follow him. I was one of the first members in the original "Young Buddies" fan club on AOL and he sent us all a signed photo~! He's an awesome guy. I got to meet him years later when he was inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, IN. We had just moved here from Texas -- what luck! This video made my day. Thanks!

Outstanding leadership. To go out and run hundreds because you felt like you didn't do enough sitting being Montana... That says it all. Steve Young was that man when the lights were on and, more importantly, when he wasn't being watched.

I loved Steve Young as 9ers QB but most of memories of him were all the painful losses. They were so close so many times & only got it done once. The NFC really caught up with the 9ers dynasty & made things really tough😆 One helluva player #8 was.

Not the biggest Young fan but that’s just because I grew up with Joe. I have mad respect for him though and he got us one in the end so that’s awesome. The one thing I loved in this video was him telling the players to get back to the huddle after a big play and not dance around until the end zone. Players now days could use that advice for sure. Every time they tackle someone they are dancing around like it’s the second coming, it’s ridiculous.

What really stood out to me was how he interacted with his team mates. He got everyone's head in the game and made sure that everyone knew their job. It was like he was playing checkers and everyone else was playing chess. That's the real difference between the pretty goods and the greats.

Those 50 year anniversary jerseys were my favorite of all time. The 50 year patch was awesome. In 1996 I was only 12 years old and with no money. For years I’ve looked for one with no luck. Last year before the Súper bowl I found one from someone in England on eBay! $156 dollars and looks brand new! 20+ year search finally over. I got the #80 Rice jersey by the way.
I wouldn’t sell this jersey for $1,000.
