Greatest QB before the flag football era for protecting QBs who can’t run….true beast all around
I saw a game last year where a rushing lineman coming around the right side lunged to reach Brady. The lineman's finger grazed across Brady's helmet. Perhaps 4-5 inches of the helmet was brushed ever so gently by fingers. Flag thrown. A 3rd & 10 should have been 4th & 10 was now 1st and 10. Tampa went on to score a TD. I thought to myself- WTF can Marino, Montana, Elway and other old time QBs be thinking when they see this lololol. They must fall off their lazy boy chairs in hysterical laughter. Those 3 old time QBs must have a combined 30 surgeries from their playing days. The top QBs today by comparison hardly soil their jerseys.

I loved growing up watching this man play the game. He was always calm, cool, and collected. And his throws were always just so smooth. Almost effortless. I know Brady is great. Young...Manning..etc...but Montana will always be the GOAT in my eyes..
The most skilled quarterback ever. I was a diehard Cowboy rider during the Montana years, he literally took our magic away for a while, but I never stopped loving the way he played. I know the world measures everything in sport by rings and trophies, but I never in my 50+ years of watching the game have seen anyone with his combination of talent, brains, drive, and well, cool. He could make the game seem easy and fun. Who else would have spotted John Candy in the crowd in the biggest moment in sport. Cool Joe Montana.

Born and raised in San Francisco. Was in the Army during the Joe Montana/ Bill Walsh era. What a quarterback. What a team.
What many don't realize is that SF was screwed royally by the refs on two phantom PI calls vs Washington in the 83 NFC title game that negated Joe's performance. Then in the 90 NFC title game vs NYG, Joe was KOd midway through the 4th quarter with the lead. I'll always believe Joe should have won those games short of bad luck from refs and injury and at least played in 2 more SBs and I think could have been 6-0 in those games. Consider also, he through out his elbow in spring training of 91 and missed all of 91 and 92 before being traded to KC. Imagine a healthy Montana with those SF teams of the early 90s if that injury doesn't occur. It boggles the mind. He also played in the 80s, where there was no real QB protection anywhere close to the 21st century. No rule against falling on top of the QB or slinging him to the ground and seldom was head contact called, no defenseless receiver rule, no anti lunge rule, the 5 yd chuck rule existed since 78 but it was admitted by the league that it wasn't enforced heavily until 2004. I'd take Joe Montana all day and twice on Sunday over any other QB in NFL history. No one can touch him at his peak, especially considering the culture of the game he played in. The NFC defenses in the 80s were killer. Bears, Eagles, Giants. In the Super Bowl he has a ridiculous 127.8 career passer rating

Didn’t have the biggest arm ever but without a doubt Joe Montana is the most accurate and most efficient quarterback of all time. Joe Montana’s pocket presence was second to none, plus he was ice cold under pressure. Great leadership as well.

I am not at all a quarterback expert. But after watching this (and a decade's worth of live games with Montana at QB), I don't see how people questioned his arm strength. His long passes that hit his receivers almost perfectly in stride are works of art. His arm seems as powerful as most quarterbacks I've seen.
I agree. The problem starts with the scouts. They all said he had average arm strength on scouting reports and that is what always sticks but when you watch him throw, he's hitting 60 yard bombs in stride with no issues at all. If you stand him next to someone like Elway or Favre and watch him throw, he's probably not going to impress anyone the way either of them would because they are known for having cannons. I've seen interviews with receivers talking about how different it is to catch an Elway pass and how it takes getting used to because in practice you can hear the ball coming. Shannon Sharpe once said it was like trying to catch a rocket because he throws so hard.
However, Montana never had to have that kind of arm strength because everything he threw depended on timing an accuracy. He could throw the ball hard enough and far enough for a receiver to catch it whether it be 10 yards or 60 yards and he could put in a spot where no one else had a chance to catch it but the receiver.
There's a 6 part Documentary on Peacock called Joe Montana Cool Under Pressure that was done this year. It goes through his entire career from high school through being the number 8 QB on the list at Notre Dame up to being the man in KC. The guy was a winner at every level and he was doubted at every level too. He just had a knack for pulling out a victory from the jaws of defeat. It's a good watch.
@@jasonmatthews806 the scouting reports werent wrong about his arm strength. He also tested out with average arm strength. But where the scouts got it wrong was his ability to release long throws without hesitation before receivers were open, and with pinpoint accuracy. Almost every QB can throw it 60 yards inside their mechanics. With Joe, he saw things before they happened (much like Gretzky) which allowed him to always release in perfect mechanics (which is a huge factor). He didnt need a strong arm, because he was always a half step ahead of the play, itself.

Consider these amazing Stats :
1. Joe Montana never took one snap from the shotgun.
2. The 92 yard drive to win the '89 Super Bowl was actually 102 yards. Niners had a holding penalty along the drive.
3. Montana had 2 Super Bowl Rings in his trophy case before Jerry Rice arrived.
4. Montana had 297 yards, 5 TDs in Super Bowl against Denver while hardly throwing in the 2nd half.
@jlee161 I stand erected. Not sure what his total yardage was in the shotgun. My main point is Montana's numbers have nothing in common with today's hyper inflated freakish offensive output of today. With today's rules against hitting the QB- in the shotgun a QB has 2+ seconds minimum to release the ball before a lineman can even reach you. And when he does- he best be damn gentle about it. Sorry you had to do all that painstaking research. If I stated generically : "Marino / Namath never ran with the football." The theme of my comment would be obvious. Of course they did. @@ruthgoldblum919 what I feel is more impressive is that this was a much different, much rougher era that Montana played in, a lot of those calls they made back then would be so many penalties and it was so rough that era yet Montana kept his cool and maintained his footwork and coordination. That's the reason I think he is WAY better than Brady, he was tougher and played better in a rougher environment

He first noticed the pain while running to his right and throwing across his body to the left in a game. Its still impressive that he came back from it in a short time after surgery. After the comeback he led against the Saints in 1980 (one of the more underrated comebacks of all-time), you could just tell he was going to be special and was going to be a force in this league for a long period of time

Joe had an amazing set of skills that only a rare few ever had:
Amazing footwork, especially off the snap, he could escape or move the pocket and throw while on the run. Was a pocket passer but had the athleticism to improvise and make difficult throws look easy.
Probably one of the most accurate passers ever, if you watch the vast majority, if not all of his deep throws, the receiver would always catch the ball in stride. They wouldn’t have to break their run, slow down, or adjust to the ball. It would literally just fall right into their arms. And he would put the right amount of touch on it, so it was easy to catch. Was a mastermind at reading defenses, you could see him go through his pre snap reads, then his progressions lightning quick.
Excellent comment, totally agree. When people analyze a player, I think they have to look at all his attributes, and Montana was really good or great at ALL aspects of the quarterback position. If people want to argue that he's not the greatest, they can have at it because of how subjective it is, but there shouldn't be much argument in terms of Joe being one of if not the most COMPLETE quarterback of all time

I spent his first year with 49ers pacing my living room as I watched Joe Cool and Company pull game after game out of the weeds under massive pressure, with poise, humbly. Yet not be the starting QB the next week. 🤔 😡😡
Finally, he got his start day, and it's been nothing but history since.

The ending of the 49ers/Bengals game in 1987 was the stupidest ending in NFL history. I don't know what the Bengals were thinking. When you're up by 6 points with 6 seconds left AND THE BALL, you take the intentional safety. You don't run a play, and then give it back to the Niners, and then leave Jerry Rice single covered

There was a reason why Joe Montana was nicknamed "Joe Cool", because he was always cool under pressure and The 1981 NFC Championship was a pure example of that when he rolled to his right to make that pass to Dwight Clark with time running out. Now known forever as "The Catch". Montana was pure magic!
Where is the weak arm some say he had? I don't see it. In fact, I never saw a quarterback throw more accurate 50 to 65 yard passes where the receiver doesn't have to break stride. And Montana's delivery is so effortless. He makes a throw that looks like it's going to be 20 yds by the look of the easy motion, then you look at the pass and it goes over 50 yards.
I didn't see that as much with Elway, Marino, etc.
No less an authority than Lawrence Taylor, a throwback from the era when quarterbacks were killed in the pocket, calls Joe Montana his greatest of all time. I think he's without a doubt right.
There are many great quarterbacks over the time I've been able to see them play. I didn't get to see Johnny Unitas, Tittle, jurgensen, or Joe Namath in his prime, but I did see the greats of the 70s up to 2023.

I live in Plymouth, MA so I watched Tom Brady for many years; there is no question that Joe Montana was a much better quarterback than Tom. As someone said about Montana, " Poetry in motion." Can't say that about Brady. Also, Joe Montana's nickname was Joe Cool; can't say that about Brady with all his tirades, and theatrics.
Those throws where the reciever doesn't have to adjust AT ALL are amazing...merely has to open up his arms and the ball drops right in! The ammount of precision there is insane!! 🤯

I was so fortunate to grow up in the Bay Area and witness the Niners during the glory years. It was the best. Even more fortunate to be able to be a kid and see the Oakland Raiders play with my dad in the 60's. Joe Montana gave me some of the best memories of a lifetime.

I loved watching Montana plays. He was such a character on the field. So much flair. You knew he would come up with something even in the most difficult situation. But what I really loved is how COOL he was. A monster of coolness under pressure. A proper leader.

The rules started to change in the mid 90’s. By the time Brady started at QB the game was very differently. Certainly the rules made the game more pussified during Tom’s career, but to say Brady’s early career was the same NFL Joe played in is untrue.

Watching these plays after all these years you realize that Montana was a mobile quarterback. You forget that since he was replaced by Young and with all the running QBs you see now, but Montana was prized for his mobility as well as his other great qualities.

with the correct accuracy so that it reached the receiver's hands
with the supreme control of the form, so that the receiver did not have to correct the trajectory.
and with the brain, arm and heart in sync.
That's why even the fans of the other teams enjoyed watching him play, that's why his teammates knew they trusted him blindly and that's why before his retirement they already called him: master of the game.

Not only did the Niners suck but the whole style of play had devolved into a glorification of hard hits and smash mouth football.

He simply was the best qb to be fit in the west coast offense. Montana play style is about pre pass reads and timing. Which is what the west coast offense was about.
Joe Montana. One of my favorite players. He played for both of my favorite teams. The 49ers and the chiefs.
Joe didn’t have best arm and wasn’t the most physically gifted but man he had the best ball placement of any QB I’ve ever seen. The back to back throws to Rice & Clark from 2:01 - 2:12 were a thing of beauty. The spiral he had was a thing of beauty. I think he’s the best precision passer we’ve ever seen, some of these throws are pure art. It almost looks effortless and so smooth

@@rplett if Brady played in the same era that Montana played in he would be DEMOLISHED, defense was a lot rougher then and many plays then would be penalties now, Montana maintains better footwork and better coordination than Brady while at the same time playing in a super rougher space

It’s fun to have all the GOAT remarks for JM and TB here, but no one’s mind is going to change either way. The delight of this video is just watching a truly great player in some of his best moments. Great memories awoken here with two conclusions: Montana was deadly accurate in a more brutal era of football than now, and man did he throw a beautiful spiral.

Finally some highlights I enjoy watching, After the "Catch" my favorite 49er game was when the 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals with 2 seconds left !!!!!!!!
That was something else, I also loved the 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter against the Eagles.
