In July, Nueva Jerusalén, a small town of about 3,000 in the western Mexican state of Michoacán, was all over the news. A group of what the media dubbed "religious fanatics" had destroyed a public elementary school with sledgehammers, apparently on the orders of the Virgin of the Rosary (an avocation of the Virgin Mary). Photos circulating all over the internet featured angry men, women wearing colorful headscarves and long dresses singing prayers, and a town that looked like a medieval theme park. According to the articles we read, Nueva Jerusalén's inhabitants believed the apocalypse was fast approaching and that they would be the only ones to survive it, and therefore they had adopted some fairly odd rules for living. For instance, sex was banned since it should be strictly for procreation, and if the apocalypse was around the corner, why bother having babies? The public school-hating Catholics also apparently had visions of the Virgin Mary a lot. The more we read about this place, the more questions we had, and, inevitably, we decided to load our gear into a car and film a documentary about the place for VICE.

Religion is not poison. Catholicism laid the foundations for Western culture as we know it, science, music, medicine, universities all have their origins in the Church. What is displayed in this video is most definitely NOT Catholicism or Christianity. One cannot have faith without reason, this is what causes cults such as this.

Just for clear out, in the minute 3:05 the subtitles are grong. what the guy says is "te pueden multar" (they can be fined) NO "te pueden matar" (they can kill you).
being mexican, i just wanna say we're not all like this. i've been watching vice docs for a while and it gets pretty annoying to see how much hate is written on the comment sections from other countries (especially the US) on anything concerning mexico. as flawed as we may be, we have a beautiful country with wonderful people and ignorant people can't seem to look beyond what is on the news, docs etc.

they will probably kill you if you try to prove it to them. its better to pay off their leaders and have them do the lower jobs in society (ask the leaders to tell them a stone is worth 1 sin). we dont need everyone to be smart, its more productive if a selected few are smart and the rest remain sheep to do the bidding.

You guys (VICE) really need to improve on your subtitles.
That was the hardest thing to read. I had to pause about every 5 seconds because lines were shown too quickly, lines were divided in really awkward ways, lines had too many phrases instead of spreading them out and were done with white text on top of other white text.
I've seen this done as poorly on some of your other videos as well.
