Well, how many people can say that their childhood friend became pope?? My family and the Bawden's were extremely close back in the early to mid 70's; David was a good friend of mine, and we were the first altar boys at the traditional chapel that was started there in Oklahoma City. (Okay, David was officially the first one, then he taught me.) In fact, my father was David's Confirmation sponsor, and Ken Bawden (David's father) was MY Confirmation sponsor, when we received that Sacrament conferred by Archbishop Marcel Lefevbre (prior to his 22 July 1976 supposed-suspension by the Vatican). My family moved away from OKC in the Spring of 1977, about the time David (I believe) went off to the SSPX seminary in Econe, Switzerland. While I had learned of his "election" not long after it happened, it was only very recently that I learned of his passing and discovered this documentary. I had often thought about reaching out to him but honestly, wasn't sure what I could even say at that point. I will choose to remember David as I knew him back then in OKC, and have been praying for the eternal rest of his immortal soul.

I think I've found some symbolism in that, too: much like the turkey being improperly cooked, but served with pride (you'll remember she grilled the acolyte early in the movie about "if he knew how to cook a full dinner properly"), she filled her son with half-baked ideas, he spent an incomplete time in seminary, was "priest" for a woefully short time, then presented himself, lukewarm and frozen in the middle out of the microwave, as the new full and true pope!

@@anselman3156 A) Jesus was not a pope. B) We know extremely little about Jesus’ early life, indeed the vast majority of his life. It might be more accurate to hypothesize that both lived in the house of Joseph. It was relatively recently that Social Security, and advances in medicine, made independent living possible for seniors, with a pension. Prior to that, extended families living under the same roof was quite common, probably more the rule than the exception.

Agreed, except I don't think he's "mentally ill" perse: I think they are just a bunch of simple, and seemingly pure souls, who genuinely love Jesus and his Church, and they believe they are doing the right thing. There doesn't seem to be guise in any of them. I know how it all works, regarding proper Pope election of course, but how could one believe that these passionately devotional, yet simple souls, would actually end up in Hell for not following Mother Church? They remind me of Children. "Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

I come to find out I was ON CAMPUS, a FRESHMAN, when Bawden came to speak at KU. And I MISSED it. God bless Fr. Steve. He could out-tradition the most traditional, and yet when he celebrated Mass in Latin for us students, he did so according to the traditional rubric-the Ordo Missae promulgated in 1969 by Paul VI. May the Lord grant Mr. Bawden eternal rest, and may we all pray for him.
Phil's vows are interesting-he did NOT elect a successor last fall. Was he ever ordained? And why are they in English? One thing I cannot abide is the insistence on Latin in liturgy, but an indifference toward the actual function of language. I have never heard a traditionalist outright state, but I can hardly conclude otherwise, that they regard it as something of a magical incantation.
Thanks, Adam, for this sensitive take on the man.

This is beyond sad. The false "pope" is not even an ordained priest. I feel especially sad for the young man who wants to be a true priest. One should not make fun of these people as it is really tragic - they seem like sweet yet unstable souls who are just completely delusional. I am mystified at how someone who is not even an ordained priest can have his parents vote for him to be "pope" and think it is all true. Even the priest at the class discussion, says "Im not going to defend the nonsense of Vatican II", but yet hes still operating as if its totally legit. Michael and especially his Mom are sincere, extremely nice people who have a strong belief that is actually not out of the mainstream, many Catholics have the same issues, they just did something about it. Were Michael a more charismatic person, he might actually have created a movement and a new Catholic Church in the USA. I mean if people give Kenneth Copeland can get people to donate thousands so he can buy a new jet, its not out of the realm of possibility a more energetic Pope Michael could bring about his new church.

    • @johncronin9540
      @johncronin9540 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I would correct you on one point. The priest at the class discussion actually said, “I’m not going to defend the nonsense that happened AFTER Vatican II…”. He didn’t describe the Council itself as being “nonsense”. It’s a very different sentence than the one you quoted, and is somewhat vague, as it doesn’t clarify whether he was talking about Pope Paul’s actions in implementing the Conciliar reforms, or some of the various innovations or alterations that happened in the wake of the Council. His statement could be interpreted in many different ways.
I’m not as critical of Vatican II as many discussing this are; indeed, an argument could be made that they didn’t go far enough, but I’m not going to argue that here.
I would only say that for those who may be distressed about the Novus Ordo liturgy, there ARE other rites in the Catholic Church, such as those Eastern rites still in communion with Rome, but who have liturgies in other languages, such as Greek, or even, with the Maronites, Syriac (very similar to Aramaic- “Syria” being another name for “Aram”).
Indeed, the Maronite liturgy was written by St. John Chrysostom, dating back long before any existing Latin liturgy, as Chrysostom lived in about the late 4th and early 5th Century CE. It’s certainly far older than the old Tridentine liturgy.
The reason the Latin rite exists is because, at the time of the founding of the Church in the Western Roman Empire, Latin was the everyday language in the West, while Greek was the language most common in the East. But nobody speaks Latin anymore, as an everyday language, unless you want to use the modern languages into which Latin evolved: Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian.
So there is really no need for Latin, other than for scholars, and the reforms of Vatican II had as one of their goals making the understanding of the liturgy being more understandable to the people, by celebrating it in the vernacular.
I highly doubt Jesus knew more than a few words of Latin, as his everyday language was Aramaic. He would have known Hebrew, as that was the language of his scriptures (the Old Testament), and he likely would have known Greek, as that was the official language of the Eastern Roman Empire, and it’s the language that Roman officials, like Pilate, would have used in their official capacity in Palestine.

A man who stuck to his convictions. People in the comments may laugh, and of course they do. Was Pope Michael the vicar of Christ? Maybe not, but I dare anyone in the comments to dedicate this much time to something you believe in, instead of following another man/institution and accepting something you know in your heart is false.
Sometimes we can learn a lot from someone who the whole world says is crazy. Most men stay silent, for fear of being ridiculed. I'd rather be ridiculed for something I believe in than live with the knowledge that, deep inside... I thought something and didn't say it. It's something this modern Internet age just absolutely DOES NOT understand: integrity.
Most people read "integrity" as "being good" or something (thanks, modern education systems.) It means being true to yourself. Many of us are not true to what we believe... we see foolish things going on all the time, and agree in silence because we don't want to be the "odd man out." And a great many more of us don't even think about it. Many people don't even believe anything anymore; we only believe what we've been told by mass media and sites like Twitter.
Be very careful the next time you hear someone, or even that little voice inside your head, say "Well everyone knows THAT!" As if everything we hear on the Internet, or in school, or even in church is some received wisdom that we do not have the capability of questioning. If you are truly ignorant, be quiet, but if you've searched for truth and found it, or hear something that sounds false... well, you know what to do.
Pope Michael did. I'm not even a Catholic, and I'd rather be him than some doofus who sits on streaming sites, watching someone else play a video game and agreeing with what all the other people there say. Braying like sheep, in a herd.

As an addendum, I look at what the kids call the "ratio" these days: 106k views, and 777 likes. Most of the people who see this video watch it and laugh, "HAHA this guy is CRAZY, EVERYONE KNOWS he's not the pope!" Yet you probably aren't even Christian, and if you are... probably not a Catholic. You wouldn't listen to the "real" pope any more than you would Pope Michael. So why are you letting an institution that you don't believe in, tell you what's what? At least give this man a like for stepping out on his own and having his say.
Kinda like how you and your family don't get along anymore, because you're still mad that Dad made you wear nice clothes on Sunday when you were growing up. And maaaaaan, you're an independent thinker now! You think it took guts? Look at this guy, Pope Michael. :-)

Is there any effort underway for another conclave? It's understood that his mother is still alive and I do think he still had a few loosely connected followers beyond the date of documentary. There seems to be a growing interest in him on reddit and in traditionalist circles and some people are trying to track down the seminarians who were connected with him.

Pope Francis is unlikely crazy. Seems like he knows what he is doing, and if that happens to be bad, then he is probably morally responsible for it. Father David AKA Pope Michael was probably a little crazy and obviously not competent to be a Pope even if validly elected in Vatican City.

I am actually friends with Pope Michael, & NO, I am not one of his followers.
He is a bit, eccentric, yes. But I have had lengthy conversations with him about theology, in the broad general sense, & he is no dummy.
I must admit, I'm never disappointed when I talk with him generally about, church history, & theology.
I can assure you all that, he is not a total Nut-Ball.
At least no more of a nut ball than, the protestant reformers of old.
He was apart of the Sede Vacantist movement, meaning, there are a remnant of believing Catholics who feel, the Roman Catholic Church has fallen into what they see as, modernity, secularism, & liberal theology.
And they feel part of the cause is, the election of what they percieve as, an antipope, in PM1's case, that antipope would be, JohnXXIII.
He was elected by a few other Sedevacantists as they understood, catholic canon allowed under such circumstances.
And yes, there are other Sede Vacatist Catholic Sects out there too.
There are the Palmarian Catholics for example, & those folks really are freakin nut-jobs in the truest sense.
Based my dealings with Pope Michael, he's not a Nut-Job, a Cookey Fanatic, or a Wannbe Cult Leader.
He's a man of strong faith who wants to practice his faith the way he honestly feels in his heart that, God is calling him to do.
And he has a small following of people who believe, like wise.
He did also get himself consecrated a few years back by, an Episcopi Vigante with valid orders that check out.
In my opinion, he's no more crazy than, the Eastern Orthodox, or the Anglicans who are also, BTW, not in communion with Rome.
BTW, I am an Anglican. & I totally get this man.
Now, if anyone is thinking of commenting on this post, try to be mature about it, & keep your bigoted mudslinging to yourself.
    OK?
If I see it, I will just delete it, report is as hate speech, & block you.
Personally, i'd rather spend my time doing more constructive things than, engaging in such nonsensical immaturity. OK?
    Thank you.

He seems like a truly nice person. He is polite, devoted to his mother and not shy of physical labor. From a Catholic perspective, he's a false prophet who is leading people astray, but from a non-Catholic perspective he's a great pope.

    • @jwatson154
      @jwatson154 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

MrJohnnyjeyy Nope you cannot put him at the same level as the Eastern Orthodox Church! The difference is between this guy, the Anglicans, and the Eastern Orthodox Churches is that the Eastern Orthodox Churches have valid sacraments despite not being in Communion with Rome. They also have Apostolic Succession unlike the Anglicans and this guy. In Addition, 6 of the Oriental Churches are in communion with Rome. So you see, you can't compare heresies with a valid Church.
