  • I was conking out on the road, it was fuel starvation from the previously refurbished fuel tap but my worst problem was really bad starting. The bike was a nightmare to start, I was just asking for sprag clutch failure it was so bad.Why wouldn't this bike start well, the carbs have been off multiple times?

    Great vid mate. Thank you for sharing it.
    A masterclass in patience and perseverance. I would have been swearing much earlier in the process.

    Great video - one of the few places on the internet I found a starting position for the richness screws. I ended up with 2.5 turns out on mine which seems good. I hadn't noticed the choke jets in the float structure either, a good find! I ended up changing 2 carb bodies to replace the broken choke tubes I don't understand why they are sooooo fragile. The other fragile bits on these carbs are the vacuum nipples of top of the diaphragm covers - snap off easy!

      Cheers David, yes, it’s all about the Carbs on these bikes! I think I could take mine off blindfolded now. 😮

    Thank you sir! I had hard starting problems with my 1995 TB900 even after carbs were rebuilt. I also did not know about the little jet in the plastic float assembly. I took the carbs apart and sure enough one of three float assembly was completely blocked. I cleaned all three assemblies, and the choke passages with carb spray and compressed air. Now the bike fires right up first time, every time regardless of how cold it is! thanks!

    Brilliant result Terry, you had great determination to get to the bottom of the starting problem and have been in my thoughts.May you have many enjoyable miles now. Thanks so very much for sharing this with other Daytona owners, you will have no doubt saved others from such a painfully long process of troubleshooting the same faults that you had to find. Ride free T. 🏞👌🏍🙋‍♂️😉

    I had a drama with my trophy 1200, I ought it with badly cracked manifold rubbers. I changed them and she wouldn’t start.. I ended up bench syncing the carbs and put them back on. Got a big bang back fire out of it so now I’ve ordered a carb kit to replace the needles and gaskets. I think I’ve had the carbs off at least 8 times since I had it. Your video has thrown a bit of light on my problem so I’m gone check the choke/ idle jets as you have done. Hopefully I’ll be able to ride it finally. Thanks for your video great work.

      Thanks for the kind words and the very best of luck. Double, triple check the coil/HT lead placements too! It’s easy to reconnect incorrectly when you’ve had the coils off. Best of luck 👍.

    Very nice work Terry, you present the complete story and well worth watching for a lot of reasons.
    Just goes to show that it is helpful to know the ins and outs of the system and the value of forums where there is a lot of knowledge combined to steer you in the right direction.
    My cb550 from 1977 had a puzzling problem, the float bowl level was ok with the engine off ( using 4 clear hoses connected to the bowl drain hose connections ) but when the engine was running the level would drop in no's 2 and 3, .
    After some pondering and coffee i wondered if the tiny air vent holes were blocked after all those years of being on the job.
    So i checked and both were blocked, the temperature would rise, the air expanded and the fuel level would lower leaning out the mixture.
    Cleaned both out and the levels remained steady ( of course ) and i also only recently got the idle mixture right after years of hard starting, it starts immediately now, i love diagnostic video's.
    And thanks for the tips on the 360 cam; Max.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Max. That was some investigative work on your part on those vents, carbs catch out a lot of people, even the so called "carb expert" I took mine too made them worse. Mine is a good starter now, the choke circuit was so bad sometimes I just couldn't get it going at all depending on the temperature.

  • @harryhumphrey8636
    @harryhumphrey8636 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also found the choke pickup jets blocked in the float frame, it's the one part you remove & put to one side, not even realising there is a jet in it! I can't believe you're using that lovely car as a work bench! 😲

    Thanks so much for this video the same situation was happening to my Daytona and I didn't even know it when it starts hard you cleared the pilot Jets but then the politics kept getting clogged up because of the choke circuits my hat's off to you

    Finally you can enjoy it and it is sounding sweet. I apologise for not mentioning the enrichment nozzles for 3 reasons, a) You'd had it at a professional ultrasonic cleaning workshop who should have told you to take the choke plungers out, b) I expected I'd be telling you how to suck eggs since you'd had the carbs apart so many times, c) A fault in the choke circuit was unlikely to be causing the starvation during load operation. Normally I don't know when to keep my mouth shut but there's the odd occasion!
    God forbid you ever have to take the carbs off again, it's easier to disconnect the throttle cable at the twist grip end and just thread it through, taking note of the routing of course and if you ever run out or have to prime, once it starts switch straight to reserve.

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the professional cleaners really let me down on the choke circuit, I am a bit gutted they made such a mess of it. I am always happy to be corrected Niall and I thanks you for your advice, I really was not aware of that jet/restrictor in that part of the plastic float bowl assembly, completely bypassed me, I'm stupid! I had cleaned the choke plunger circuits with the float bowls off and made them all clear previously but just didn't recognise the extra restriction. Yes, the tap was my issue on the starvation, I have done about 300 miles on the Daytona recently and it has been flawless, my tap rebuild was obviously less than perfect which is odd as I did find it quite straightforward at the time. It has a new one now and I'm Golden. I just want to use that bike now rather than be fixing/improving something on it, I think am there now, cheers Niall. (Throttle cable=twistgrip, I will do that next time, I expect I work hardened my copper choke pipe all the times I struggled to get the throttle cable on and off).

    good job. i Just bought a 2000 triumph trophy that has an intermittent power loss problem. It starts and drives but the power is not full. Any ideas what that could be?

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Start with valve clearances, easy enough to measure and a lot of people ignore. That wouldn’t make it intermittent though. Check airbox and all carb rubbers have full integrity, air leaks can cause havoc. Have the carbs been stripped and cleaned?

    Terry I am running into this issue where on the On position the bike idles but under load cuts out as if running out of fuel switch to Prime runs like a dream - I changed fuel tap and I am still having same issue any of your insight be much appreciated!

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When the tap is in the normal position it is relying on a good vacuum from one of the carb tops to pull open the diaphragm on the fuel tap. Check that the vacuum line is nicely seated and sealed either end, doesn't have any leaks through dry cracks and that it is not kinked anywhere. If the fuel tap is new it shouldn't be that, it must be this vacuum line. I used a refurb kit on my fuel tap originally and it was less than satisfactory and ended up replacing the whole tap as well. You can lift the tank at the rear a couple of inches to free up the fuel lines and see if it cuts out under load then, that should confirm it is kinked if it works well. Good luck!

    I have a Trophy 1200 and I am suffering with the same thing but only when the bike is warm..do you think I have the same issue?...where are you based Terry ?

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m Irish based Paul. If the issue is only when hot there is a very good chance it is your crankcase position sensor. It is well known to break down when hot and work again once it’s had the chance to cool down again. It is quite an easy change, just have a spare gasket for the right hand crankcase cover as there is a good chance it will break when you remove it. There will be a little dribble of oil when you take the cover off but no need to drain the sump. Worth a change and a reasonably a low cost item to change.

    Where are you guys finding new parts for this bike? I'm in USA and can't find new parts online so far for a 1999 trophy 900. Any help?

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      My local Triumph dealer can still source many new parts, e.g. airbox complete. Just google “Fowler triumph parts” identify the part you want. If Fowler can supply then I would of thought you could order from your local dealer? Otherwise try Sprint Engineering (triumphparts.co.uk) who ship internationally (but not large items). Join Facebook group called T300 for excellent advice and others will be USA based on that.

    I have the very same bike, cutting out/ spluttering then just dying on me at around 60-65mph. It will fire back up after a few turns. So to rule anything out I’ve just brought a new complete tap along with PVL coils and CPS. Hopefully it’ll be one or the other.
