Sounds like Dr. Manhattan basically decided that to save his universe it would have to be incorporated into the Superman multiverse and thus created a version of "Superman" for the Watchman universe.

And in turn it was Superman who created the Watchmen universe, because it was Action Comics #1 that inspired Hooded Justice to become the first costumed hero in 1938.

I imagine being the illustrator for a comic with Dr. Manhattan would be frustrating af because literally every panel he shows up you need to cover his pickle with something. Which is why his front side is actually nonexistent.
Did you even read this comic book? Because if you did, you'd know they didn't cover anything, they just let it all hang out

on watchmen his bird actually hanging there, and the artist literally draw it, hell even the characters in the comics aware of it
So the child of Mime and Marionette is how the world of Watchmen is saved. Dr Manhattan was too disconnected from humanity to inspire them, but Superman could. The watchmen universe just needed a Superman so he recreated that in a way. Nice juxtaposition. Best part of the story
Those panels with Carver and Manhattan in the diner are INCREDIBLE. As an avid movie watcher, I can't help but picture that scene in a movie. Take away the superhero aspect of this comic, that was beautiful. To see a man grow into a star, battle hard times and crumble all within a single moment.....shockingly beautiful.

Long story short, Dr. Manhattan did what he did so he could put his power into someone who he knew would be more empathetic towards people. He realized through watching Superman that he could of done so much more with his powers in his universe. The thing haunting Dr. Manhattan most was standing by while watching the comedian gun down a pregnant woman. By watching an observing Superman, Dr. Manhattan realized his flaw. He wasn’t a hero, he doesn’t have that personality and character. Despite having more power and the capability to take action when it needs to be taken Dr. Manhattan is a man of in-action. Mainly because he lacks emotion and just doesn’t care. So yea he put his power into a host with a more human element capable of caring and inspiring hope.

@@jflanagan9696 Oh yes he saw it for sure, but as our friend here pointed out is that he doesn't care, like it's an abstract-emotionless entity watching events unfold, they're already "written" for him. He represents a conflicting nature about a being of absolute power and human nature/emotions.

Great story. And a great set up for future stories and events. It also shows Superman in his most purest form, inspiring good in people; Ozymandius, dude might be off the rocker with his thinking, but he is a genius, along with being a master planner.
Man events like this always bring a tear to my eye where it brings together all previous stuff/stories or shows/mentions them for a brief moment. Events like these are in a way a celebration of what came before and shows how the times are changing.
I will always remember the manga in 2008 called Mazinger ZERO where ZERO effects the multiverse so to speak and is fully away of the dying Gundam/mecha/Super Robots genre dying breaking the 4th wall in a small way and the hero is helped by silhouette's of almost every mecha from gundams/getter/daitarn 3/past to present/etc help in the final battle. A story celebrating the genre and acknowledging the changing times.
I think that manga had some tie connections to the super robot war series

Quite possibly my favorite comic ending of all comic endings. Sad yet filled with so much hope. Real tears man.
I read all these comics when they came out.
The ending with Dr. Manhattan ending and transferring his essence brought tears to my eyes.

We need a version of this where there's a clock timer in the corner to the end of the doomsday clock, with each issue being a different "hour".

I think that dr Manhattan couldn’t see the outcome of the child, just like he couldn’t see the outcome of his encounter with Superman. So he decided that this kid must be worthy of his power since Superman is someone who is worthy too.
The first 10 mins of this didn’t age well with Russia invading Poland… they were so close to predicting the future

the death of supermans parents is easy to explain. theres a new earth superman and a prime earth superman and somewhere during dc rebirth dc decided they were both actually just the same character lol (flashpoint side effect) so they share confusing origin stories

Some ppl may not understand or feel the gravity this story told by Geoff and Gary has on the DCU right now. Some may feel the relevance of the series died due to delays or that it sits in a very awkward position compared to where the other comics are atm. But that doesn’t matter because the story isn’t meant to be a tie-in or build-up to or explain something bigger that will happen to the DCU in the future. It EXPLAINS the DCU, why it is how it is, and why it will continue to be how it is. This story gave the DCU life, it gave it actual shape, form and meaning. In fact, one could easily say Doomsday Clock gave the DCU a long-awaited and much needed...
...Rebirth.

Omg. Literally just did the same thing. I found this video and watched about 5 min of it before I started the comics. Saved it in my Watch Later for after I finished reading.. ran back here immediately afterwards. I've read alot of DC, but this one here tied SO MUCH together. I cried ffs!

Definitely good writing and a lot to unpack. Thanks for going over this lengthy but amazing comic that I am late on. I searched up DR M and saw your vid.
EXPLANATION: Superman the the ultimate catalyst. So he arrives on Earth like he always does and that affects the present. But to fix the present, you need to go into the past. By moving the Lantern and getting rid of Green Lantern (Alan Scott), the world never had the Justice Society of America in WW2 and never got the early exposure to heroes and super powered being that they desperately needed. This is why the world is freaking out now with the "Superman Theory" and metahumans race. Manhattan also acknowledges alternate continuities and that Flash and his Speed Force plays a great role in the multiverse. Of course, fixing the past and present also fixed the future, which allows for the creation of Saturn Girl and the Legion of Superheroes. All these events fix the situation of Johnny Thunder and Saturn Girl in the present (which both are currently in). Now that Manhattan fixed time, they are currently part of the main DC continuity and have history with Superman, allowing him to help them. Due to the Justice League of Society, people aren't afraid of superheroes and they are inspired by them. This causes the Kents to allows Clark to embrace who he is. Since they allow Clark to be a hero at such a young age, he prevents their car crash (just like the Pre New 52), becomes Superboy, meets the Legion of Superheroes, and etc.

I just read the last issue of Doomsday Clock and then I see this video like 2 minutes later.
52:15 .. depends who that one guy is. Some people are "1 in a million".
That's not part of the calculation. When you're on an uncontrollable course set to destroy 1 or 5, you won't have the luxury to ask if that 1 is important. It boils down to mathematical value. That's the point of that theory.
This video is an amazing education in the history of comic books and their publications.

Yeah you kind of get that vibe where he put his powers into a a young boy to be raised by a loving family.
He sees that Superman will always save the DC universe no matter what universe it is, so he created his own Superman to save his universe.

Ughhhh how much i wish alot of these comic books were made into real movies. I would prefer them to be animated movies because live action movies dont do so well but it would be amazing

It's not impossible for a live action comic-book film to be good, just the people who turn them in to films need to get this "it needs to be more realistic, people won't understand it" mentality out of their heads. The Watchmen live action film is one of the best, if not the best, comic-book to live action adaptation I've seen and they pretty much copied the comic word for word, and the small changes they did make, in my opinion, made it possibly even better than the comic.
@@Gohka I dont think there's something inherently wrong with adaptations, but when you go so far from the source material, what made it originally "good" kinda waters it down for new people and alienates the core audience imo

My man, that literally looks like it’ll be the next DC/Marvel crossover, announced as a throwaway line in DC’s best crossover/reboot story ever written.
During issue ten, there are those scenes where Manhattan is jumping through time, first with Coleman about his movie roles. Then with Superman and seeing the different versions of his origin story through different timelines. Then by moving Alan Scott's arm away from the lantern. I guess I don't completely understand how Dr Manhattan isn't able to time travel and still able to do those things. I read this story and was under the impression that he was time jumping.... guess I'm a bit confused with that.
Lucas Denault I was going to comment on this, then I read yours, and you’re right. Dr. Manhattan CLEARLY HAS the ability to travel through time. I love this channel and Rob’s insight, but in my opinion, he’s incorrect I’m saying that Dr. Manhattan does NOT have the ability to travel through time. He clearly does. This story plays out to PROVE that he does. He messes with the timeline once, changes his mind, messes with it and fixes it later on, and if he didn’t have the insight yet, he CLEARLY couldn’t have done this previously. PLUS, he messes with it twice, meaning that he previously chose one set of actions, then YEARS later saw the consequences, changed his mind, then traveled back to fix it. He can ABSOLUTELY travel through time, or else he couldn’t have done two different courses of “meddling” here. Some could say: “well, he meddled at the time, and then he saw the future that COULD be, and decided to meddle in a different way.” But that would negate a lot of what happened in this run of the comic series. That explanation would basically imply that “it was all a dream”. But if he thought about meddling, rather than ACTUALLY meddling, then he wouldn’t have had a clear vision of the future results anyway. Plus, saying “it was all a dream” is just lame and kind of ruins the story. It wasn’t a dream. He CLEARLY went back in time, meddled, changed A LOT, waited until the results screwed everything up, talked to Superman, was inspired, then went back in time again to fix it all. There’s really no other way to see it than that. Sorry Rob, but you’re wrong on the point that he can’t or doesn’t time travel. He clearly can and did.
@@frankguinan9927 I think John’s made it pretty obvious that he can time travel. He’s able to do it, otherwise why would all those photos that Luthor collected keeping appearing in different points in time?
Plus Carver Coleman was the first person Dr Manhattan met/saw when he arrived in the DC universe.
This would have been a long time after Alan Scott reached for the Lantern on the train, and became the Green Lantern. So he would’ve had to have gone back in time to move the Lantern, showing that he can time travel. If he was just perceiving then he wouldn’t be able to physically interact with the Lantern in the past. This is proved further by the fact after the events of Doomsday Clock, he moves the Lantern back after having moved it once before.
If people ask or say ‘well why didn’t he do that in the Watchmen comics’, then just remind them that it was written by Alan Moore. Like Geoff John’s, Scott Snyder, Frank Miller and (to a degree) Grant Morrison, Moore puts things in that are relevant to the world building, story or character. When you read Watchmen, what would the relevance of Dr Manhattan being able to time travel do other than take away from its realism, and also because it wouldn’t have suited the story and stakes if Manhattan just went back and did everything. The way he was written was to be pretty omnipotent, and as it was never stated he could time travel, there’s no reason why Geoff John’s says he can’t.
He can't time travel. He arrived before the superhero DC universe began. He can see the way things will be. So he waits and makes changes to see how the changes effects what he sees.
