It is about the same size as yours. New growth is kind of different looking. Sort of a brown shoot. Thank you for all your information.

@@zukimom2508 That should be okay! They are fairly hardy plants. If you continue to get brown leaves, you can try increasing the humidity around the plant.
For first I've seen this plant and I love it so, I bought one that looks just like the one on your video, thank you for sharing this information it has come very helpful to me since I've never knew or seen one of this kind before. It is so unique. Does this plant produce flowers?
Hi Shevy! I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying your Birkin! They are such beautiful plants. They don't typically flower according to what i've found in my research. Most philodendrons need to reach maturity which can take anywhere from 12-15 years before they produce a bloom. Philodendron Birkins will not normally produce flowers when kept as an indoor plant.
Hi! Love your video. I bought one on clearance at lowes The stalks are just beginning to droop. I’ve also noticed the leaves turn towards the sun. So I tried to give it more light. Now the roots are popping out of the top of the soil. What should I do? Thanks
Hello! Sounds like it might need a repot. Generally if the roots are popping out of the top, the plant is getting too cramped in the pot. Droopy leaves can also happen when a plant needs a new pot. Make sure you repot it in a pot that is an inch or two bigger and with the appropriate soil mix. 💚
I have 2 Philodendron Birkins. I have had them for about 10 months. They haven't grown much. The new leaves are white but often turn brown & die. I have them near a south window, but they receive little direct sunlight.
Hi William! If the new leaves coming out are mostly white, you might want to try giving it less light. This will help encourage the green variegation to return to the leaves. All white leaves will often get brown and die off because they have no Chlorophyll to photosynthesize for the plant. As far as growth goes there are a couple of things to try. The first is repotting, check if the roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot. A new pot might help encourage growth. The second is fertilizer, if they haven't been repotted for a while they might need a dose of fertilizer to encourage growth. I hope that helps!
Just got a new one and tried to pick out what seemed to be most healthy of a selection. I have had it less than a week. I noticed some small brown spots on a couple leaves and was hesitant to purchase not knowing what that meant or if normal. Any idea why the spots? Does that mean the soil is bad that it’s in? Soil appears good and has what appears to be a mix with some peat. Thank you.
Hello! I would check for two things with small brown spots. An easy fix would be to increase the humidity for the plant. You can stick a pebble tray next to it with some water in it or buy a small humidifier. The other thing I would look for is pests. Check under the leaves for signs of spider mites or other bugs. If you find pests, treat the leaves with a neem oil blend.
Very informative video. Just repotted mine as it was wobbling and I did not water immediately after repotting because of handling the roots. After 3 days I watered it but the plant was getting yellow leaves. Any idea what's going on ?
Oh no! Hope your plant is doing okay. Was it getting root bound in the other pot? Yellowing leaves are typically a watering issue. The other thing I would check for is signs of pests underneath the leaves.
In mine Birkin the leaves are getting yellow and they fall off. Any chances for a rescue if I take it from the soil and check the roots, if roots will be ok what to do next? 🍀
@@paukop007 How many leaves have you lost? A couple things can cause yellowing leaves besides root rot. Make sure you are watering on an even schedule and not letting it dry out too much between waterings. Check the underside of the leaves for pest damage (especially the yellowing leaves) this can look like small holes, brown spots etc. As a last resort pull it out of the pot and check the root system. If the roots appear brown and mushy with a bad odor, you likely have some root rot happening. The plant should be in a pot that has a drainage hole. Hope that helps!
Hi Emily! I like to bottom water this plant for 10 minutes or so. This will allow the plant to absorb all the water it needs through its root system. To bottom water, simply place your plant in a bowl that has a few inches of water in it. The plant will absorb the water up through the bottom of the pot. Hope that helps!
Just got this plant ysday. And I am brand new to plants , so when it didn't have a tag on it I had no idea what it was untill I did some research today. My question is that the varigation as I'm learning it's called seems pretty good, but the one leaf (which I looove) is half all green and the other half is the strippy Birkin green n white look. Is this a good thing ?? and also the bottom leaves seem to be green. I personally love all the different colours in the leaves (some more white some more green variations) but I'm learning this could mean it may change.
Hi Erin! Congratulations on your new beautiful Birkin plant! The shape that is half variegation and half solid is what people like to call a "half moon" leaf. They are beautiful and I love them too! The bottom leaves are green because they were probably not exposed to enough light. As long as you keep your plant in a spot with bright indirect light, you should be able to encourage that gorgeous striping and variegation.
The contented plant hello id like some help in saving my plant I purchased about 2 1/2 week ago and it was some what dying & is not doing much better and any helpful suggest as I don't want it to die
Hi Daffodil! Can you tell me what it looks like? Are the leaves yellowing or browning? If the leaves are yellowing then it might be a case of root rot.
Oh yay!! I just use an all purpose fertilizer, I water my plants with fish tank water. I also use the miracle grow houseplant fertilizer. It's just a pump that you use once a month or so.
I would probably take a look at repotting it if the roots are showing at the top. It might be working its way out of the pot if it is really root bound
I cannot get it to grow at all. I have had it for months, it stands tall, but not one single new leaf. I did see little tiny white bugs, and used the dawn and peppermint mixture and some alcohol just on the top dirt, not at the same time though. I bought another one to see if it was because I repotted the other one too soon. Just bought a humidifier.
Hi Christa! Sounds like a pest problem might have contributed to the lack of growth. You can also try neem oil on the leaves to kill off the pests. If you want to try and jumpstart the growth you can give it a low dose fertilizer. Lighting is also a big factor! Make sure the plant is getting lots of bright indirect light throughout the day.
Hmm the mushy part makes me suspect it could be an overwatering issue. I would also inspect the underside of the leaves for potential pests. Sometimes they bring home unwanted guests from the plant stores.
Hello! This sounds like a lighting issue to me. Most plants will produce smaller leaves when they need more hours of light. Try moving it in a spot with better lighting and see if the leaf size improves. 💚
I've had a birkin for a few months now and, just like you said, the tag on the pot says "new leaves will be dark green and variegate as they age" but that has not happened at all with mine. It's defintely growing - it's doubled in size since I got it. Get a new leaf once every few weeks, but none have started green. The new leaves are always heavily variegated and I am so confused!
Sorry for the late reply! How much light is it getting? You might want to move it back from the light if the leaves are getting too white. That should force it to start putting out more green
