Which is the Best (Official) Version of Super Mario Bros. 3?

  • So you may have just learned that now the Nintendo Switch has GBA games as a part of their Online Expansion Pack, and in that small few they've released so far, there's one that is barely even an original GBA game, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3.
It's a 2003 GBA version of, one of, if not the greatest 2D platforming game ever made. Obviously you gotta love the first 2 Super Mario Bros. games but- c'mon, Mario 3 is where its at.
And this game looks and plays excellently on the Switch, leaving some to argue that this might just be the best way to currently play Super Mario Bros. 3. Saving of course crazy ROM Hacks and fan projects.
But, personally, I'm not too sure about that.
Currently on the Switch Online service, there are three ways to play Super Mario Bros. 3.
Through the NES games, the ability to play the original 8-bit Super Mario Bros 3.
Through the SNES games, there's Super Mario All-Stars, which contains a remade 16-bit Super Mario Bros. 3
And now, through GBA games, Mario Advance 4.

Fun fact: switch online uses the GameBoy Player version of super Mario advance 4 which has rumble and uses the original SNES colors. If you played this game on an original gba, the colors would be lighter

The typically washed out colors are optimized for the non backlit GBA to offset for the lack of color differences on such a screen. They’re some sort of a color filter that you should filter back in a typical GBA game.

My favorite version of SMB3 is the NES version because I really like its artstyle and it has the best physics out of the three versions, and this version of the game feels the most replayable to me. It's also the most challenging version of the game which I like. My least favorite version is probably the All Stars version mainly because Mario in that version looks very off without gloves, and that version has a few typos in it. The physics in that version also feel a little sluggish compared to the other versions.

    • @anotherblowncartridge
      @anotherblowncartridge  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I don't know if I get any of the sluggishness, but the absence of gloves is certainly an issue.

@@mohamedaminekhadhraoui6417 For me, the physics in the NES version make the movement feel more fun and satisfying because of how heavier Mario feels and the amount of friction in his movement. In the GBA version, he feels a lot lighter to control which isn't a bad thing, but it makes his movement feel a lot less satisfying when running through levels imo.

Gba version also does several cool touch ups like the dust effects from changing directions also applies to sliding down slopes too. And the E reader levels, especially the smb1 remakes use a gba-ified remix of the SNES smb1 theme. Which is cool and makes it slightly easier to make a mario advance 5, lol.

    My recommendations are as follows:
Famicom: One of only two ways to play with original difficulty (getting hit with a secondary powerup reduces you to small Mario) and 8-bit graphics and sound.
NES: 8-bit graphics and sound in English
SNES: World (but not level) select, updated graphics without screen crunch
Super Mario Advance 4 (GBA): Original hardware, world and level select, e-reader card effects (harder than Famicom difficulty in some ways but easier in others, SMB2 vegetables in levels, different Luigi physics, P bar halved, slower timer, 1-ups replaced with 3-ups, coins from defeated enemies like SMW). E-reader powerups like 100-up, boomerang and cape. Cons are screen crunch, worse audio quality and level cards required for e-reader levels , card effects and powerups (unless you use an emulator to scan them).
Super Mario Advance 4 (Wii U/Switch): All e-reader levels unlocked but no e-reader card effects or powerups.

The GBA version is the one I recommend because of the extra content (assuming you have some way to unlock them), as well as the quick save feature which allows you to quit and return to the same point at any time.
That said, the NES version is still pretty friendly with unlimited continues, lack of a save feature aside. Mario 3 was never a brutally punishing game to begin with, and the remakes don't really change much about that, so a begginer can still play the original version without worrying that the game is gonna set them back too much.
Any version of this game is a fine way to play it.

I just can't really give NES games without a save feature or a password system a pass. Even with unlimited continues, you're going to have to get up from the couch eventually and leaving the system on all weekend was never a good idea.

In 2016, we bought Mario all stars for the Wii in Toys R us! This is how I first experienced the first 3 (4 if you count lost levels) Mario games! I remember 3 being my favorite of the bunch! Than my dad found his SNES (which surprisingly wasn't yellowed) and that's where I played Mario world! I was hooked! I was literally 7 and playing Mario world. I remember I spent a long time going to the top secret area and just getting 100 lives! I keep forgetting that I can go to my basement whenever i want to play these games, which is now leading me to buy Mario advance 4 for my DS Lite!

The NES sounds way better than the SNES for these games. These games suffer from the SNES sound chip, which does not mesh well with the style of music Mario games have. It's honestly really unfortunate that the SNES has some of the best game music and some of the absolute worst, along with everything in between. When people understood the sound capabilities, you could come up with amazing work, but that was not many composers. The NES has far more quality game OSTs compared to the SNES.

    • @VegaPhil

It’s not that people prefer them because they’re better versions just that they have more of a connection with that version if it was the first one they played. But also some of the things you’ve mentioned are just opinion not fact. Just because you think they look and sound better does not make it definitively true. In fact the only thing you listed that could be solidly argued to be an objective improvement is the addition of save features but even then some would argue that they prefer the challenge of having to complete the originals in one go. So it is not as cut and dry as you think.

If I were to rank then all it would go
    1) GBA
    2) NES
    3) All Stars
The NES version has the better player physics and (imo) better presentation. Both 16bit versions made some changes I don't like, for example they standardized the unique red and orange fire flower design that was in the original, and standardized a lot of stuff in general. I get it was to have a more consistent brand but what I like about classic Mario games is how unique they all feel from each other and these little changes kinda take that aspect away in some regard. GBA and SNES have the same exact physics (unless you play as Luigi in World E, where he has his own physics) and look almost the same with the only real differences being Luigis unique jump animation, a better Peach sprite, and the addition of gloves on the brothers. All of that considered plus the fact that advance 4 has all that extra content (and theres even more if you use the E Reader cards on the original Japanese release) I feel like objectively its the best option in terms of content, but I do admittedly usually play the nes version more just because it looks and plays better to me.

I hadn't noticed a difference in physics between the games, but now that you mention it, I'm sure it's there. Even just reviewing the gameplay footage I recorded, I can kinda see it. And yeah, that fire flower design is a fair point too.

@@anotherblowncartridge The difference in physics between SMB3 NES and SNES is a myth actually. You can do a google search, but the code's already been decompiled and compared countless times, and Mario 2 and Mario 3 function exactly the same as before. Same with SMB 1 and Lost Levels, except the Nintendo devs missed a minus sign when breaking bricks, which is why Mario goes up through them instead of bouncing off of them like on NES. Aside from that, everything else is the same. It's also why there's an easy to acquire patch for that brick problem on SMB1 All Stars, cause it was such an easy fix.

@@tamerkoh Oh wow! Okay, I'm gonna look into this. Maybe this is a rabbit hole that's gonna end up being another video.

@@tamerkoh I am aware that they're source ports, but I swear theres something off with Mario's controls in SMB3 SNES. Either Im thinking of the GBA Version, there's something weird going on with the way the SNES interprets the code (probably not the case since Mario 1 and 2 control the same), or its some sort of weird "mandell effect" situation because I know other people who've said the same thing. Regardless my ranking is still the same because gloveless mario is wrong haha
