.hack// will always have a special place for me. Music alone is pretty unique and I would hope someday we get a revival of this series.

All .hack//G.U. tracks are composed by Fukuda Chikayo. While all vocal songs are sang by Mitani Tomoyo. The two of them are a team known as LieN.
And yes, Gentle Hands is an ending theme.

Gentle Hands will always remain so damn heart-wrenching to me because of the associated scene in the game… What a beautiful piece of music.

when you said the music has this "enticing and creepy" vibe to it, that is dot hack, a simple game at the surface, faux MMO game where you play as someone playing a game with some randos, and as you peel the layers you get creepier, you get darker, you get this game that shows you people's sides they don't wanna show in online games, you get to see the reason they escape to this world, you get to see why people have been going into comas from playing the game and why "The World" (the in game name for the MMO they play) exists in the first place, it being the result of a very tragic love story
It's so sick, and the deeper you go the cooler it gets

The thing I love about the .hack//GU soundtrack is just how it keeps this constant undertone of tension throughout (except for Piros the 3rd). It is a wonderful blend of both dread and awe in equal measure. While visually I prefer the style of IMOQ, musically GU takes the cake.
That said, I prefer the IMOQ version of Δ Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground's theme.
For Jesse, .hack is a multimedia franchise and I would say the essentials to get everything from the GU trilogy would be in order:
      -.hack//SIGN (Anime)
-the quadrilogy of games: Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine
      -.hack//Roots (Anime)
and then the GU Trilogy (Last Recode makes it another quadrilogy, but that is it's own thing)
On the lower end I would say watch Roots for sure before playing GU, since GU is a direct sequel and Roots is what establishes Haseo's motives as a character. The older stuff is more if you want to get all the less blatant stuff and what is up with one character in particular.

A tragic and slightly creepy love story lmao
      ***SPOILERS***
born of a one-sided obsession for a girl that barely even cares about the guy who created "The World".

Us fans just call it dot hack GU. And to answer you're question its a media franchise that started as a game which birthed anime sequels and movies and the sort. The game dot hack GU actually has a remaster on PS4 and PC called dot hack GU last recode, that's the version I played. If you know the anime sword art online its like that but better lol.

To be fair, .hack//SIGN came out in Japan 2 months before Infection did, so the anime came first, but the point stands. Phenomenal series.

Yeah .hack//SIGN was first and pretty much right after ep 12 aired .hack//Infection released in JPN. From there we get a mixture of the original 4 games and some LN releases.

The fact that SAO got kajiura to work on their ost after doing .hack’s did not help the comparisons either.

  • @Phyllion-

For context given your reflexion at the end, Gentle Hands is the ending theme of the first game (and a common leitmotif throughout the games). Full Force is the final game's last boss, Cubia's, theme for its first phase, hence its creepy sounding nature, while the second and last phase Final Bout is a lot more ominous and slow with distant male chants and war drums.
Fukuda is known for a lot of things, but nowadays mostly for the Naruto Ninja Storm games.

.hack is a multimedia project, basically they made anime and games at the same time which is pretty cool. Some cool stuff was that you could find codes to use in the game from little anime OVAs that came with it
This trilogy is just called dot hack G.U. (Rebirth, Reminisce, and Redemption) and the other series are games people refer to either as the original tetralogy or IMOQ (Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine)
Of course there is a lot more but the main important parts of .hack are SIGN (the first thing released which was an anime), IMOQ (4 games), and G.U. (3 games which are set after the events of the first)
Anyways, all of them have peak music even if they were composed by different composers. Sadly the series is pretty abandoned by Namco now even though the developers, CyberConnect2, are definitely willing to make more

whew, .hack// (I've always called it 'dot hack' when saying the name aloud,. I think that's right). As a whole the franchise is... many things. Games, anime, manga, light novels, movies, the works. In general it's about a fictional MMO called 'The World', and both the people who inhabit it as well as the things that go terribly, terribly wrong in it. As for the games themselves, they're action-combat RPGs with some interesting parts that vary by the game where you have to deal with bugs in the system, and have some 'hacked' powers that extend past what a normal player of the fictional MMO would be able to do. It's a tough series to get into, but I think it's an interesting look at the characters in it, and the ways that in playing a game we either separate ourselves from our usual personality, or instead reinforce it and live as heightened versions of ourselves.

The GU series frequently goes on sale on different platforms every month or so (4 games for like $7), but the original series (IMOQ) is very difficult to get into, as they aren't on recent platforms, and can be VERY expensive.

I completed the GU series (with the exception of the fourth game that was released many years later) and played the first tetralogy of dot hack games (I think I got to the final fourth entry but couldn’t complete the last secret dungeon due to not being able to prevent myself from getting cyber corrupted each time I attempted it due to that damn Data Drain.). Most of the soundtracks for this franchise slaps in my opinion.

haseo's character design is intgeresting, his characters is obviously an avatar the player created and you can tell he wanted his character to look evil and edgy. and thus haseo looks villainous and he acts standofish, and when his appearance changes he looks even more evil. until finally near the end he somewhat reaches enlightment and mellows out and his avatar becomes heroic looking.

I think it would be great for you to listen to "Sis Puella Magica! by Yuki Kajiura", pretty much all of Yuki's BGMs have this mystique medieval vibe along with the vocals from a completely made up language she invented, should be interesting to say the least. The BGM comes from the "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" anime series.

  • @BlueSoraMaroon
    @BlueSoraMaroon 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, vocals are plentiful in .hack// in general, they are all gorgeous without exception (hi, I am a very passionate fan). to your question: G.U. is hilariously a random cover name for an operation meant to be easily hidden within the setting, it can stand for anything and the intro trailer to the games gives you random possible words for it, like Graphics Universal. The games are hack and slash, not turn based, however IMOQ (or infection, mutation, outbreak, quarantine) are probably more correctly described as menu-command action hack and slash, so not turn based exactly, but abilities and items need you to open a menu and select from it to execute actions which is.... wild, to put it mildly.
Thank you very much for sharing this, it is a very pleasant surprise and shock to see .hack// anywhere.
I'm new to the channel (yes, I was lured in by .hack and other of your videos (I enjoy them a lot!) If you ever get curious, .hack is such an interesting conglomerate project, and they have a CD track ost of songs that never appear in-game. Not variations of in-game songs, completely original songs, and my favourite is of a location you never visit in-game, only in the novels, and it's called The Six Ringing Peaks of Al Fadel. I don't know if you would like it, but it's an interesting track.

I never really got into the .hack video games, only played the first one, and it was many years later. But .hack//SIGN the original anime was incredibly formative to my youth, and it had an absurdly good soundtrack, one of the best of all time in my opinion. The game music is good, but it just doesn't hit the same for me.

A common misconception is that SAO took after .Hack, but both actually came out the same year (2002) and are the product of a major trend at the time thanks to the boom of online gaming with Everquest, PSO, Final Fantasy XI and others. These two are the only ones from that time that really blew up though (and SAO took 10 years to actually become this popular thanks to its anime)

'Gentle Hands' is definitely a song built to hit you in the feels and growing up on this series, I can definitely see why people like this song but personally, its one of the weakest songs in G.U.; all nostalgic no substance. I would listen to any instrumental over this theme. Even the songs where gentle hands was used as a lite motif hit so much better than the vocal version. No hate to the singer its just the composition overall. The instrumentals had more to prove so they hit hard out the gate, and gentle hands comes in at the end and I'm just like : Yawn...not interested at all about the main protagonist crying over his girlfriend who had no impact to the story what so ever (at least in the game.) Gentle hands has a bittersweet sound that has no warmth or closure to the events of the game. Songs like "Shallow Dreaming" and the vocals in Ovan's theme were much more memorable and had such color and warmth that just brought chills I can't describe and I don't even like Ovan.

God, i love dothack. The universe it has created is one of my absolute favorites. The themes, the music, the characters, THE WORLD!
This series is what is called a "multi-media" series, where the plan was to release projects in multiple media platforms from the start, announced in 1998, & released in 2001. In the case of this series, the first three that were released at the same time were:
.hack//sign (anime, & earliest in the timeline, iirc)
.hack//infection (the 1st of a quadrulogy of games named after stages of a virus disaster, & takes place shortly after sign)
.hack//legend of the twilight bracelet (manga & is a loose follow-up to the game quadrulogy)
The series has light novels (a.i. buster series & the another birth series), anime ova (quantum), anime film (.hack:the movie, which never released in the west, unfortunately), & multiple anime series & games.
G.U. takes place after the legend of the twilight bracelet timeline wise in the WORLD R:2, which replaced the original version very shortly after that manga's story. Dothack//roots is very important to G.U., as it's a companion piece to it, so if you're to dive into G.U., you should at least watch that & sign beforehand.
