“See that driving guys, you never lose it!” 😂😂😂 I love the fact there are thousands if not millions of us 40 somethings reliving our childhoods this way. Great video mate, I was having a cup of tea in my tamiya technigold mug 👍👍
haha i'm telling ye my friend! Although i haven't owned an rc car for years, i have been flying both electric and nitro helicopters n planes, and have been saying for ages i'd luv to get a Tamiya Kit to build again! I have magical memories of getting my first Grasshopper aged 11! I then went on to buy up all my friends Tamiyas for pennies off them after they had caused minor damage to their cars and either couldn't be bothered or didn't realise how easy they were to fix! I ended up with 19 rc cars!! I really enjoyed the mechanical/engineering side of the hobby too so fixing up broken cars was a pleasure but i remember a lot of kids just couldn't be bothered?? Thats how i managed to buy their cars so cheap. My best buy was a brand new Tamiya Michelen Pilot Escort RS Cosworth that simply needed a new wishbone!! haha i kid you not!! and for how much did i get this car!?? £15 !!!! Those cars were over £200 in Beatties back in the 90's!! I got a Tamiya Thunder Shot with charger, 2 batteries, immaculate save for a bit of dirt, for £20 !! Amazing ! My goodness if only i kept all those cars! I'd have made a couple thousand selling them all today haha.
Never mind the 40 plus, I'm 58 and just bought a re-release Holiday buggy. The chassis is totally different to the original I had back in 81 but so is my chassis! 😄 been flying for years with helis and planes but the Mojo was going a bit so me and a mate decided a change was required.
@@johnnoble01 lol mate i fly rc helis and planes, mostly my trex 600 and 700E's, but my eyesight is awful at 39 and i never feel comfortable flying with my spectacles on so i'm thinking of giving up and concentrating on rc cars! lol I want all my old cars again, Gh1, GH2, Bear Hawk, Thunder Shot etc etc etc! lol
@@johnnoble01 Nice, the rerelease Holiday Buggy was done on the DT02 chassis. A couple of things I’d do: Ball bearing kit, Tamiya sport tuned motor or RZ, BZ, TZ super stock motors (if more speed in needed) oil dampers & a good servo saver. 👍🏻
I built a rerelease Tamiya Grasshopper ( 1 ) for a friends son recently and I absolutely loved it! I’m 39, and grew up with all the ( now) vintage tamiyas, and they were amazing! I’ve actually decided to get into them again, and will buy one a month and build on Sundays. I’ll try vlog my experience n post on my own TH-cam page. Cheers for great vid, I always wondered how fast would a technigold make my Grasshoppers, Bear Hawk, Michelin Pilot Cosworth, Manta Ray...etc etc etc! Now I know! Lol 👌👍
This takes me back to my childhood in the mid 80's.I used to go to my local Beatties and watch them old Tamiya videos. I use to have a Hornet which was my first RC car, those old Tamiya videos used to always mention the rx540 technigold motor. it was godlike back then :)
Great comparison video. Actually have a new/unused RX 540VZ motor still in the original box with the instruction sheet . Never knew it was such an iconic motor
That was pretty cool. Noticeable difference in speed etc from the first two motors to that Technigold. Even between the Technigolds settings and then the last motor.
So true.. I was so disappointed in the GT tuned I slapped a 3S Lipo expecting to burn it out but to my surprise made it fly and still running in my BigWig today.. hmmmm
Thank you, very interesting experiment. I modified a Super Hornet, fitting a BZ motor and making an adaptor plate so that the gearing changed from standard 18T pinion to 24T. All very well, but the kids kept smashing it. I've taken it back to standard 540 with 18T pinion and still have good fun with it.
Steven Hall Cool 😎 yeah there’s a fine line with that chassis regarding the speed, I think a standard 540 motor on 2s Lipo is just about perfect 👌🏻 Thanks for watching Stephen 😊👊🏻
I remember racing at my local club, I ran a hopped up Boomerang at the time & swapped to a techigold motor the week it came out. Nothing could touch it at the club for weeks as they were in such short supply. Mine came out of a bigwig kit 🤣👍🏻
For bashing the max setting would be the way to go as long as your gearing is on par but for the trackyou must figure out the sweet spot or you will kill your battery before your done the race. I am speaking or back when the TG came out and batteries were NiCad's. With today's LiPo batteries the TG is awesome. I have 2 in my Clod buster at the lowest setting for the most torque.
I bought a Technigold new back in the day for $99 AUD for my Thunder dragon. I got a gold tamiya battery, dual front shock upgrade and it was full ball raced. Was a little rocket. God, i wish i still had it.
Back in the day when it came out (I think with the BigWig if memory serves me right) it was a revelation for Tamiya drivers. However, there were a bunch of better motors from Reedy and other companies. Being the Tamiya lover and having had like 6 of these back then, I loved them. Had one in my 959, my Celica Gr.B, and Supershot. Wish I still had the motors and the 2 rally cars. ;) Thank goodness for brushless as I only run brushed motors in Tamiya re re kits that come with them and 35T Tekins in a bunch of trail vehicles.
I still have the technigold stalled in audi quattro with 18 teeth pinion gear. I have tried it in the frog and kyosho's tomahawk. Quickest is tomahawk, smoothest is the frog, while slowest is audi quatro. My nicad battery pack was 7.2v 1200mah only
I ran my re release bigwig with standard bigwig stickered gt tuned motor ,very disappointed, dug out one of my tecnigold motors, in standard celica grb normal setting mode ,much, much better .
I still have my original Avante with my GOLD motor in mint condition. Built it 1989. Had to use the Adsepc which I didn't like. Just so nice to look at.
just ran my GH2 with the 380, god its slow.... just glad i fixed the pinion issue i was having with the 540 i have, 90% cleaned and fully rebuilt and is running around 20 years later after being tucked away and some replacement bits ordered on ebay, just waiting on some bearings for it now hopefully be an even nicer runner then
Great video can you do a techn gold vs super sport? Also can you do a video of how to turn the motor up and down because it is definitely faster turned all the way up
Back in the days we mixed the texhnigold outer part (magnet) with the inner turning part (sorry for my English) coming from the dynatech 01H motor. It even outperformed the actual Dynatech Motor, gave another kick and we managed to stay within the rules of the Tamiya only races... Give that another try... You will be surprised ;)

hi friend I have a Clode Buster that I am now rebuilding , it has been in storage for over 30 years... two Technigold motors are mounted on it, and I don't know what the condition of the brushes is. Where can I find brushes for this motor? This does not have to be original, even a replacement of another motor, but which will be suitable for smooth operation of the motor. Can you help with advice or direct me to a place that sells something like this? thanks
For bashing in the 80's the T/gold too much money, I ran a Parma 18t double a fraction of the price. But if you want the T/gold buy the MFA that looks the same but cheaper.
Great video. I have a question that I hope someone can help with? I have an original 1986 Bigwig that I am in the middle of restoring for my son. I would like to install a modern ESC speed controller as opposed to the mechanical speed controller. Can anyone recommend what ESC to use with the Technigold motor? Thanks guys!
The GT tuned needs the thrust bearings replaced with BB. I did that and it runs noticeably better. Also the GT is a 25T where as the Technigold is a 21T so makes sense that it’s faster.
I installed a Technigold on my Hornet back in the 80's. A buddy of mine gave me the motor; I have no idea if he'd done any tuning to it or if it was "stock". The Hornet still had the old 3-speed mechanical speed controller at the time. To say I found the car uncontrollable with the Technigold is an absolute understatement! In fact, I think I pulled the Technigold after maybe two or three runs and reinstalled the stock 540 that originally came with the Hornet. As much as I hate to say it, I really didn't like the Technigold installed in the Hornet. I felt it was better suited to 4WD buggies and on-road cars which would be better at putting all that power to good use. I still have that old Hornet and the Technigold motor. The Hornet has been upgraded with an ESC and ball-bearings everywhere. Maybe when this pandemic is over with, I'll reinstall the Technigold and take it for a run to see if it's still as uncontrollable as I remember it. Fantastic videos BTW. I'm a died-in-the-wool Tamiya fan my whole life and I've been pulling all my old Tamiya RC stuff out of the closet ever since discovering your channel. Cheers!

True story, my mate in the 80’s had a Fox with a technipower motor and was always trying to convince himself it was a quicker motor than the technigold I had in my falcon saying it had more torque better acceleration etc. He was an idiot. Greetings from 🇬🇧
This was my motor on my thundershot. I also mounted its rotor on the stock motor and it was faster. If you mounted its rotor on the dynatech is even faster
The 480 Gold came out in 86 and the ST in 87. 480 was a 25 turn at 22,000 RPM and the ST 22,000 at 22 turn so I’d like to see the ST and Technigold go heads up

If you really want the technigold to perform you should upgrade to a 7cell 8.4v battery. I bought a used hornet in around 2002 or 03 that had this setup and it was like a rocket. I later installed midnight pumpkin wheel and tires on the back and it was crazy fast.
That black car he had looks exactly like an old rock buster what’s it a grasshopper 2? I’m not a fan the original grasshopper still is an awesome looking buggy . Old school buggy’s it’s definitely on my Mount Rushmore of O.S. Buggy’s. The hotshot 2 is up there the frog 🐸 and the boomerang 🪃. That’s my old school top 4 .
yo he conseguido un porche original 959 con ese motor pro 10 euros y me han dicho que el santo grial yo ni lo sabia aora probare a ver como funciona ese motor
To me it looked and sounded like a totally different car with the technigold, the others made it look and sound like a budget RC car, maybe that’s just me.
The GT Tuned motor has probably more turns then the Technicold. So, not a totally fair comparison. Is the Bigwig re-release also with the Technicold motor?
Full speed you loose traction with those sand tyres with the technigold. More torque... None of the models should have come with a 380 type motor.. They are terrible. O had a Grasshopper with a 380 and it got binned.

HELL YEAH!! It was a great motor for it's performance and durability. I'll take a Technigold over any of today's garbage!!
There are too many variables here to call comparison. Without a way to verify the actual speed or GForces on the car, it's all subjective.
You should have included running time.
The GT Tuned motor has probably more turns then the Technicold. So, not a totally fair comparison. Is the Bigwig re-release also with the Technicold motor?
Hi,
No the Re-re Biggy comes with a GT Tuned with a decal that vaguely resembles a Technigold.
A 21 turn is nice but slap a 14 turn double in there!
Agreed! I have to go with my REEDY KR
2x 7T.. what a beast!
I was trying to stay with brushed technology as it is more fitting for these early 1980's designs but yet brushless power reigns
You needed a speed gun for this testing. It would have told the differences.
Why not build your own motors? Parts are available everywhere... It's really not very difficult.
Full speed you loose traction with those sand tyres with the technigold. More torque... None of the models should have come with a 380 type motor.. They are terrible. O had a Grasshopper with a 380 and it got binned.
Not speed very n very slow no performance, you can change super stock bz, very. 2 👍power try nextime video
tamiya, not TARMARARRR
Accent + wind = don't understand !
