Made my own 8.4v cell by stripping the plastic off a 7.2 and adding an extra cell with plumbing solder and a wet rag to stop heat from destroying it whilst soldering with a 6inch nail heated on the gas cooker!!! I 're wrapped the pack with rc aircraft solar film,as you said way to expensive back in the day lol

Excellent video again! My first technigold I bought was back In 86 and I saved and saved all my paper round money to buy it and it must have been in half a dozen cars over its life! I have an original avante with a unused technigold and it's just the most eye catching thing in my rc collection!
I remember seeing the technigold in the celica and 959. It was such a pretty motor, but I never managed to justify the cost as a young lad. The way you describe things is exactly as I always, and still feel about the cars, the looks the feel of them and the driving. It’s something not possible to explain to someone who hasn’t felt the same for the hobby. I didn’t sit stripping my cars after every run, I charged it up and got back out there as soon as I could. Never understood the instructions, just put it in and run it, I never understood why those lines were on there for the timing. Hahaha the golden age of RC and being 14years old. The good old days. I f I could go back I would crank the timing up.
My brother was a clever guy, and he learned me to tweak the silver can motors. We even rewired them in different winds. Remember he rewinded hes motor to 4x50 turn or something. Did 9000 rpm on 7.2v. So we buildt our own motors, to fit different applications.
I am still new to RC and I appreciate these trips back to the old "golden" days. I am looking forward to getting my first vintage-ish car assuming I win the auction tomorrow :)

I used to crank it down before taking apart as far as I can remember turning the can decreases or increases the pressure of the brushes contact on the commutator,mine was set at one below top mark as the brushes were shot!!! Ended up traveling to otley modelsport only then to find I had to go to beatties in Sheffield,very expensive at the time cost there times as much for a pair of rocking horse poo brushes!!!Lol:)

I remember thinking those motors ( which i couldn't afford either, incidentally! lol ) would make my cars go 100mph if i could somehow get my hands on one!! lol. Same, My shop had a big glass display bench as You entered, We used to leave Our grotty finger stains an I swear, drool sometimes,, Ahahahha. The equivalent price of these gold nuggets back then to now is why You had to get a paper run an save for three months or have loaded Oldies to get one in Your wanting claws!

We were relatively poor family, even though Dad and Mum worked full time ( we were a big family so Mum n Dad couldn't afford to buy us all very expensive Toys etc ) but i had an amazing childhood with my Tamiya's n other brand of RC Cars! Magical times! lol

WOW that takes me back!! I Raced for Team Associated, and some of us USED Technigolds in Super Stock Racing!! 😳 A buddy of mine had experienced taking the Endbell off by simply ripping it off - with devastating results! 😖 Team Racing was a stressful thing. "Cleaning" a Motor involved placing the Can in a Magnitizer after Hydrosonic cleaning, and turning the Comm on a bloody MINI LATHE!! Speaking of Timing, as an experiment, I took a 9 turn Triple, cranked the Timing up to *40 degrees* and fit it in a On Road Racer... It did almost *70mph* for about 20 seconds! Then it melted!! (Remembering we only had 7.2V NiCd Batries in the 80's) Ahh to be young and stupid!! 😜 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
Best brushed motor ever in my opinion. Bought mine for £5 off a friend bk in 89-90 and put it in a grass hopper with monster beetle wheels on the bk lol, didn't handle at all but in a straight line was bloody rapid👍👍
The good thing about the brush layout on those motors and similar, is that they can handle a lot of dirt without burning the com. Other types with their brushes in holders, get stuck and burn easily.
Ye gods...... this takes me back. Think I've got 3 or 4 of these..... deffo got 2 dynatech 44 and 1 each of the power and tuned ones. Went through a "gotta get em all" of the gold motors. Made the car look great.
That's my first performance motor, used that on my kyosho optima pro back in the day, I also used the Tamiya 8.4v gold power battery ,it can run head to head with twister terminators and team losi motors

I think I still have one of these in my tool box. Came with my Gen 1 Avante, which I sold long ago due to it being so fragile, but I don't think I passed the motor on to the guy... maybe I did. I definitely remember those two brush tools kicking around in my RC toolbox for forever. I'm not sure I ever ran the Technigold motor though, as I for sure got a Trinity motor set up to run in a 4WD car. Maybe I did sell the Technigold and kept the Trinity... Now I'll have to check before I go to bed after work...
Nice vid Glenn, l always wanted one of these back in the day when l was racing and like you said they were big money and as a kid with just a grass cutting after school job I did not even get close to a new one!! I did the road to it 380,540,sprint,Demon, then finally l did get a gold in the end but it was far from new and looked rough....but l gained at least an extra lap with that motor lol psychological l think but l had Gold power in my buggy!!!!! But then l got hold of a Trinity motor and Wow! I had some nice Demon motors back then too! But that motor you have there Glenn is the one l remember with most joy! Fantastic!!!

I walked into a local model shop a couple of years ago and covered in dust sat on a top shelf was a brand new one....old fashioned £36 sticker on it ......I had to ask if it was for display or for sale and it was for sale..I could not believe my luck...what a find.
I remember the Tamiya Technigold motor, I believe they were installed in the Tamiya Bigwig, when that was launched in 1986 (I think). Wish I had kept my original Tamiya Bigwig and other earlier Tamiya models, so miss the days of 'thrashing around with friends'. Well after 34 years away from Tamiya RC Cars, I decided to get back into the hobby once again, purchased a TT-02 Audi Quattro, along with some essential hop up parts, can't wait to get stuck in! Recently picked up an old Bigwig and it has one of these motors in there. Haven't tested it yet. But hope it works! Ive never owned a Bigwig but it looks great! Welcome back to the hobby!
I remember back in the late 80s I had my monster beetle and hornet. My mate got a bigwig with this motor. We started experimenting and ended up setting it for maximum speed then put my beetle wheels on the back of the hornet, installed the motor, and it took off like a rocket. Couldn't dare steer it but would have out dragged most stuff at the time.
I found those instructions a little confusing if I recall. The zero setting in the instructions show 3rd line in from the red wire side. Yet the long mark on motor was on the black motor side. Did they tune each motor and mark them accordingly?
Double check the instructions as there are two bigger marks on the can and I don't think you lined it up with the zero timing mark. Great video by the way ❤️❤️❤️
I’m not sure I just remember the manufacture instructions seemed “off” from what I saw on the motor.... I hate to tell you this but I had the box for that and tossed it, had a little damage to it...didn’t even think about it including it....sorry.

This was my first kit when I was 10. I still have one or two waiting to be built ut the issue I had wa the stripped gears and the hex-dogbones contantly stripping. Is there an after market dog bones kit and heavy duty gearbox to upgrade the 2016 version with? Thanks Bryan
Hi I’ve just got hold of a near mint Technigold motor and found a nib set of brushes for the RX540VZ, but can’t for love nor money find the brush removal tool or spring spreader tools any ware!. I’m dyeing to see what it’s like in side. Any ideas where I could get a set.?? Or are there other model tools that will fit. Keep up the good works from Ant in London
The technigold motor is so bass ass. Back in the day I put one in my gold chassis RC10 and it was so fast because the drivetrain on that car is so efficient. great motor and fantastic video
Get yourself a comme lathe mate, really does wonders to the commutator, and its fun skimming it. Really adds to the performance 😁😁😁 Then once in a while you give all of your rotors a good skimming, keeps their performance top notch. I think huddy do a really good comm lathe. Probably 100gbp, maybe less
Despite already knowing all this, having one new BITD and two runners now, but it's still interesting to see this kind of attention paid to a motor icon. So thanks! But from the instructions, it seems you've set timing to 15 degs advance timing? The 0 degs mark appears to be the shorter of the two longer timing marks, not the longest one.
Dean Evans Yeah Dean I’ve been chatting to a few guys about this, I think I made the mistake in thinking the motor came set on 0 timing, but obviously looking at the instructions, it already came with the timing advanced 🤔

As a racer back then, I used to laugh at folks who would pay more than I had just to get a slower Tamiya motor than whatever I was running at the time. Demon, or MG usually. I still think they were overpriced and slow. But oh my are they a pretty thing ! 😃
Flibbertigibbet There the GT Tuned motor, 25 turn with a different decal fitted. I actually did a comparison video a year ago or so, the Technigold was slightly faster but not mucin it 😊👊🏻

Wait! That's going to cost you extra. I don’t 🤔. I can really only think of the Tamiya 01R Dynatech but that was later on, but could be that I guess 🤷🏼♂️. That was a 19 turn motor

yeah there was a black! The RS-540SD Black Endurance. I saved up months for it. I thought there was another too I can't remember. There was the RX-540VZ Gold that was rebuildable and was like $50US and completely unobtainable for most of us 13 year olds, then there was the RS-540SD Black that wasn't 'rebuildable' and was around $35US. Then I swear there was another one, a brother of the RS-540SD, less torque more speed (few less turns) or something like that?

Glen with all the Tamiya Motors ever made can you get all the information off their stock 7.2 or 7.4 voltage what's their stock RPMs are there all rated at even the ones that aren't Tamiya.

Good rule for sport/mild tune motors with adjustable timing, is 1 or 2 degrees is fine, and more if you have a lighter load, for instance a smaller pinion or bigger spur or smaller diameter tires. YMMV, but I had good results from it back in the day. But gearing, weight and wheels being the same, it`s best not to change it more than 1 or 2 degrees IMO, and if you DO change the timing, maintenance requirements increase exponentially :)
Nice video, thanks for presentation. The ridges are just an indication that the motor is hardly used. The brushes have such ridges when they are brand new and will gradually wear down to fit the shape of the comm. There were many who used to "run in" motors with new brushes at reduced speed/voltage without load (to avoid sparkling/soot at the comm). The tuning on these modified brush motors are interesting: By changing the angle of current flow to the comm in relation to the position of the magnets, the RPM can be increased. This comes at the cost of more current draw and less torque though. Therefore it may be better to see if the required speed can instead be obtained by installing a lager pinion and keep the tuning near neutral.
great video i love the technigold i wish i could get one for free like now 200 for used one have u restored the can like put the gold back on the can you will have to do a video on how to change the brushes and the terminals where the wire goes on the old grasshopper speed controller has a fuse in it u should use it to make the rpm up and down on cuz if anything goes wrong it will just blow the little fuse out no damage to nothing ok

Hello Glenn. I have a question. I drive in my Buggy the rx540vz and i will replace them. For the technigold and the dynatech motors brushes are hard to find and at this time it is a collector item and its better to save him. On the paper, the superstock series have more torque and more rpm, but they have more turns, too. Is the super stock motor better or not as the VZ? The second idea to replace is the dynarun super touring motor. Is a 13 by 2 turn motor. The same as the 02H. But more rpm and amp´s. What for a motor of these two can i use? Thanks
I think i would have skimmed the comm in a comm lathe, just a quick tickle over to clean it up and make sure its still completly round. Failing that you could get fibreglass brush / pens that cleaned the copper up too.
A very nice motor there! Is it an original rotor in it? Or did they come in different versions? My good old Technigold doesn't have a smooth rotor, but there are longitudinal grooves on each side. Thanks for nice content in your channel :-)
Guys I've mixed up some of my rotors after a break from the hobby, and I can't remember if they are a technigold or technipower, dynatech 02h what have you. Is there an easy way to tell which rotor belongs to what motor?
Hi I think that the Dynatech 02H has Double winding on rotor while the Technipower and Technigold has Single winding on the rotor. So check the rotors. If the winding is Double it is not a Technipower or Technigold.
And when I did that the car shot more like a rocket I do think that a 0 degree timing is the 19000 I think it went over 20 when you turned it all the way up.
Probably total overkill but couldn't you diamond true that commutator . It's like a Vsmall lathe with a diamond tool you mount the motor shaft in it and run the tool up and down the commutator.

A good way to clean gaps of comm is with a ball point pen. Fits just right in grooves. Love these kinds of videos

Team Racing was a stressful thing. "Cleaning" a Motor involved placing the Can in a Magnitizer after Hydrosonic cleaning, and turning the Comm on a bloody MINI LATHE!!
Speaking of Timing, as an experiment, I took a 9 turn Triple, cranked the Timing up to *40 degrees* and fit it in a On Road Racer...
It did almost *70mph* for about 20 seconds! Then it melted!!
(Remembering we only had 7.2V NiCd Batries in the 80's)

Best brushed motor ever in my opinion. Bought mine for £5 off a friend bk in 89-90 and put it in a grass hopper with monster beetle wheels on the bk lol, didn't handle at all but in a straight line was bloody rapid👍👍

It's great performing and great sound too.
The good thing about the brush layout on those motors and similar, is that they can handle a lot of dirt without burning the com. Other types with their brushes in holders, get stuck and burn easily.

That's my first performance motor, used that on my kyosho optima pro back in the day, I also used the Tamiya 8.4v gold power battery ,it can run head to head with twister terminators and team losi motors

I think I still have one of these in my tool box. Came with my Gen 1 Avante, which I sold long ago due to it being so fragile, but I don't think I passed the motor on to the guy... maybe I did. I definitely remember those two brush tools kicking around in my RC toolbox for forever. I'm not sure I ever ran the Technigold motor though, as I for sure got a Trinity motor set up to run in a 4WD car. Maybe I did sell the Technigold and kept the Trinity... Now I'll have to check before I go to bed after work...

Nice vid Glenn, l always wanted one of these back in the day when l was racing and like you said they were big money and as a kid with just a grass cutting after school job I did not even get close to a new one!! I did the road to it 380,540,sprint,Demon, then finally l did get a gold in the end but it was far from new and looked rough....but l gained at least an extra lap with that motor lol psychological l think but l had Gold power in my buggy!!!!! But then l got hold of a Trinity motor and Wow! I had some nice Demon motors back then too!

I walked into a local model shop a couple of years ago and covered in dust sat on a top shelf was a brand new one....old fashioned £36 sticker on it ......I had to ask if it was for display or for sale and it was for sale..I could not believe my luck...what a find.
I remember the Tamiya Technigold motor, I believe they were installed in the Tamiya Bigwig, when that was launched in 1986 (I think). Wish I had kept my original Tamiya Bigwig and other earlier Tamiya models, so miss the days of 'thrashing around with friends'. Well after 34 years away from Tamiya RC Cars, I decided to get back into the hobby once again, purchased a TT-02 Audi Quattro, along with some essential hop up parts, can't wait to get stuck in! Recently picked up an old Bigwig and it has one of these motors in there. Haven't tested it yet. But hope it works! Ive never owned a Bigwig but it looks great! Welcome back to the hobby!
I remember back in the late 80s I had my monster beetle and hornet. My mate got a bigwig with this motor. We started experimenting and ended up setting it for maximum speed then put my beetle wheels on the back of the hornet, installed the motor, and it took off like a rocket. Couldn't dare steer it but would have out dragged most stuff at the time.
I found those instructions a little confusing if I recall. The zero setting in the instructions show 3rd line in from the red wire side. Yet the long mark on motor was on the black motor side. Did they tune each motor and mark them accordingly?

This was my first kit when I was 10. I still have one or two waiting to be built ut the issue I had wa the stripped gears and the hex-dogbones contantly stripping. Is there an after market dog bones kit and heavy duty gearbox to upgrade the 2016 version with? Thanks Bryan
Hi I’ve just got hold of a near mint Technigold motor and found a nib set of brushes for the RX540VZ, but can’t for love nor money find the brush removal tool or spring spreader tools any ware!. I’m dyeing to see what it’s like in side. Any ideas where I could get a set.?? Or are there other model tools that will fit. Keep up the good works from Ant in London
The technigold motor is so bass ass. Back in the day I put one in my gold chassis RC10 and it was so fast because the drivetrain on that car is so efficient. great motor and fantastic video
Get yourself a comme lathe mate, really does wonders to the commutator, and its fun skimming it. Really adds to the performance 😁😁😁
Then once in a while you give all of your rotors a good skimming, keeps their performance top notch. I think huddy do a really good comm lathe. Probably 100gbp, maybe less

Despite already knowing all this, having one new BITD and two runners now, but it's still interesting to see this kind of attention paid to a motor icon. So thanks! But from the instructions, it seems you've set timing to 15 degs advance timing? The 0 degs mark appears to be the shorter of the two longer timing marks, not the longest one.

Yeah Dean I’ve been chatting to a few guys about this, I think I made the mistake in thinking the motor came set on 0 timing, but obviously looking at the instructions, it already came with the timing advanced 🤔

As a racer back then, I used to laugh at folks who would pay more than I had just to get a slower Tamiya motor than whatever I was running at the time.
Demon, or MG usually.
I still think they were overpriced and slow.

There the GT Tuned motor, 25 turn with a different decal fitted. I actually did a comparison video a year ago or so, the Technigold was slightly faster but not mucin it 😊👊🏻

yeah there was a black! The RS-540SD Black Endurance. I saved up months for it. I thought there was another too I can't remember.
There was the RX-540VZ Gold that was rebuildable and was like $50US and completely unobtainable for most of us 13 year olds, then there was the RS-540SD Black that wasn't 'rebuildable' and was around $35US. Then I swear there was another one, a brother of the RS-540SD, less torque more speed (few less turns) or something like that?
Recently picked up an old Bigwig and it has one of these motors in there. Haven't tested it yet. What sort of ESC would I need for the Technigold? The Bigwig I have has an MSC in it still. Thanks!

Glen with all the Tamiya Motors ever made can you get all the information off their stock 7.2 or 7.4 voltage what's their stock RPMs are there all rated at even the ones that aren't Tamiya.

Good rule for sport/mild tune motors with adjustable timing, is 1 or 2 degrees is fine, and more if you have a lighter load, for instance a smaller pinion or bigger spur or smaller diameter tires.
YMMV, but I had good results from it back in the day.
But gearing, weight and wheels being the same, it`s best not to change it more than 1 or 2 degrees IMO, and if you DO change the timing, maintenance requirements increase exponentially :)

Nice video, thanks for presentation. The ridges are just an indication that the motor is hardly used. The brushes have such ridges when they are brand new and will gradually wear down to fit the shape of the comm. There were many who used to "run in" motors with new brushes at reduced speed/voltage without load (to avoid sparkling/soot at the comm). The tuning on these modified brush motors are interesting: By changing the angle of current flow to the comm in relation to the position of the magnets, the RPM can be increased. This comes at the cost of more current draw and less torque though. Therefore it may be better to see if the required speed can instead be obtained by installing a lager pinion and keep the tuning near neutral.

the old grasshopper speed controller has a fuse in it u should use it to make the rpm up and down on
cuz if anything goes wrong it will just blow the little fuse out no damage to nothing ok

Hello Glenn. I have a question. I drive in my Buggy the rx540vz and i will replace them. For the technigold and the dynatech motors brushes are hard to find and at this time it is a collector item and its better to save him. On the paper, the superstock series have more torque and more rpm, but they have more turns, too. Is the super stock motor better or not as the VZ? The second idea to replace is the dynarun super touring motor. Is a 13 by 2 turn motor. The same as the 02H. But more rpm and amp´s. What for a motor of these two can i use? Thanks
I think i would have skimmed the comm in a comm lathe, just a quick tickle over to clean it up and make sure its still completly round. Failing that you could get fibreglass brush / pens that cleaned the copper up too.

My good old Technigold doesn't have a smooth rotor, but there are longitudinal grooves on each side.

Guys I've mixed up some of my rotors after a break from the hobby, and I can't remember if they are a technigold or technipower, dynatech 02h what have you. Is there an easy way to tell which rotor belongs to what motor?
Hi I think that the Dynatech 02H has Double winding on rotor while the Technipower and Technigold has Single winding on the rotor. So check the rotors. If the winding is Double it is not a Technipower or Technigold.

Trinity Monster Horsepower motors were very popular alternative to these back then. But these Technigold Motors were just a better quality motor.

When I had that motor on one of my cars I turned the timing all the way up I was not pleased with the 0 degree timing.

I have mine too, this motor has high current draw, almost twice the rs540

Probably total overkill but couldn't you diamond true that commutator . It's like a Vsmall lathe with a diamond tool you mount the motor shaft in it and run the tool up and down the commutator.
