  • If you have a Tamiya RC with a stock silver can brushed electric motor, you may be interested in upgrading to give a little speed increase. The basic hop-ups available from Tamiya for use with the stock ESC's is the Torque Tuned Motor (about £12 GBP) and Sport Tuned motor (about £25 GBP). But there is also available another motor from Tamiya Germany, the Carson Cup Machine (about £12 GBP). We put them through their paces in a stock Tamiya TT-02 chassis and compare their performance, top speed and acceleration, to the stock Tamiya silver can motor. The results of one of the motors is truly SHOCKING!! ...and could help to save you wasting your money!
    Motor Specifications:
    Silver Can: 27 turn, 13,800 rpm, 283 g/cm Torque
    Torque Tuned: 25 turn, 16,000 rpm, 306 g/cm Torque
    Sport Tuned: 23 turn, 18,300 rpm, 350 g/cm Torque
    Cup Machine: 23 turn, 16,400 rpm, 172 g/cm Torque
As always, many thanks to the awesome ‪@robbrennanrc‬ for the help making this video. Everyone needs a friend like Rob!!! (Joke in the video!)

Great test, Mark ! Uhh, you had me laughing I must admit. Two old guys with their toys out in the park freezing 🥶 😂 But having a laugh about it. That’s the spirit. It helps being out with your mate. I remember me out alone in the winter filming speed runs and not laughing at all ☺️ Really enjoyed seeing the results too. I’ve had my brand new Tamiya cans lined up for this test for several years now, but haven’t found the time or the energy (yet). I wonder why the sport tuned didn’t perform better … I can definitely feel the difference between that and the torque tuned. But yeah, the most notable difference is between the 27T and the torque tuned. Especially taking the price into consideration. But I think I’ve had 4-5 kph difference between the Sport and Torque back in the past. Maybe that TT with the small wheels winds out, gearing wise, too quickly? And what about the battery? Was it a NiMH? I love NiMH, but for several speed runs, one after the other, the voltage drops way too quickly. A couple of minutes and it is measurable. Well, it was a good test non the less. I still think the Sport Tuned is worth the money. Like you said, especially off road. Especially if one doesn’t want to change the standard ESC or risk any heat issues (or spend the money on a brushless motor and a sensor cable). Thank you so much for the video, Mark. Best to you my mate.

Hello Mikael, lovely to read you again my friend! Glad we could raise a smile, playing simply isn't playing without the fun factor! But sometimes we have to do what needs to be done in order to run a RC channel! Yes, I've had these motors for many months, waiting for the time to be able to do the test. We also waited for the weather, but at this time of year we had to take the best we could get! Not sure why I didn't see the bigger difference in performance that you did, it could be many factors that affected this, especially the tolerances of the motors or the gearing. I just thought it best to test each motor in exactly the same platform. Yes, it was a LiPo battery, and I checked the voltage to see if it was OK for each run. I didn't use a NiMh for exactly the reasons you stated. Yeah, I still think the Sport Tuned is worth buying. Thank you so much for watching and leaving a great comment, best to you too, my mate!

Torque Tuned is my ‘go to’ motor for most of my vintage Tamiya’s, I find it’s just right and like you say cheaper than the Sport Tuned. I have one of those Carson Cup Machines, it’s ok but not as fast as the Tamiya’s own motors like you demonstrated

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hiya Martin! Same here, I think the Torque Tuned motor hits the "sweet spot" between price and performance. Glad to hear that it wasn't just me getting something wrong with the Carson motor, it really is underwhelming compared to the other two! Cheers! :)

Hi there my favourite dynamic duo! What a great real world bench test. Back in the warmth, seems that the Tamiya Torque tuned seems better value for money, cup machine looks like it’s going to become a paper weight!😂😂. I bought a few Torque Tuned motors a while ago since I assumed they were good value for money, based on nothing really other than that the TT-02S is equipped with it so it should be an upgrade over a silver can. It also looks better with that sticker. Seems my assumption was right! I do also have a Cup Machine, because I wanted to participate in the Dutch Tamiya cup a few years ago (but never did) and that's the motor they use for the top stock class.

    • @MarkBryanRC

Hi and many thanks for the comment! Yes the Torque Tuned motor does come in a lot of kits these days and is an excellent "stock" motor. Still my goto value for money motor. The Sports Tuned has a little edge on the Torque Tuned, bit it is only a little! All the best from Mark. 😎👊👍

That's really good info, Mark! I think your results were probably quite accurate, it matches what I have heard about those Tamiya motors.
I haven't yet tried the sport tuned, maybe someday I should try it. For non-Tamiya options, well, apparently Carson isn't really an option, that was disappointing! I started buying Holmes motors, they cost 15 dollars, plus shipping and import tax, so far they have been amazing, except that one got fried of course, but sadly also with them, they don't provide any numbers. It's a jungle finding a good motor apparently, part of the charm of the hobby, ha ha!

Great vid, Looked like a fun day. With low turn motors you generally need to lower the gearing so they can spool up to speed and give the performance that was expected. Granted that Carson motors isn't really low turn so still should have been able to pull the standard gearing but it might be worth a try.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks very much! Yep, Tamiya do tell you to use lower gearing with the Sport tuned. I have tested this with an M03. But the car was fastest on the higher gearing. No heat issues either. But yeah, I might give that a try with the Carson as it's torque is so low, thanks for the advice! Cheers 🍻 😎👍

Hi mark great video nice to see (watch:)) you again, I find that that a cheap alternative for higher speeds is an FTX 550 can motor works very well. it is very well priced coming in at £9.50 and with a bit of modifying the chassis can be fitted to a TT02 or a TT01. because of the large amount of torque it has you can gear it up and I have managed to get a TT01 up to bout 23-24mph with it. Hope everything is good with you and all the best my friend:)

Hi Paul! Yeah, basically, the lower the number of turns a motor has, the more current it draws from the ESC and the higher it revs. Most Tamiya ESC's have a motor limit of 23 turns. If you fit a lower turn motor you are in danger of drawing too much current and burning out the ESC. Hope this helps! :)

Very informative stuff mate - I was engrossed by that. Personally I would go for the Torque Tuned, because as you pointed out, 1mph slower for half the price seems like the best deal. Of course if you were in some kind of competitive event then the Sport Tuned would be the best option. As for the Carson, well let's not even go there. You do have to be careful with the Sport Tuned though. Several months ago I saw a video by TOMLEY RC where he was testing 3 different Sport Tuned motors - the original, an updated original and a third that was retailing everywhere for about £13.00. You guessed it, the £13.00 one was total pants which turned out to be some Chinese fake, although it completely looked the part. So never by a brand new Sport Tuned for that price. Hello. I am new to your channel and just have a tip, perhaps. All of the brushed motors I buy will be broken in under water. I simply solder one onto an esc so I have speed control and submerge. I will run it in the direction that it will run in the car to begin with to set the brushes. I will allow it to run alternating speed from 25% to 50% all the way to max allowing possibly a full minute at each speed. I have found an incredible difference in over all performance and longevity. When done I will remove from the water and run until dry while oiling the bearings/bushings since they will be warm and more apt to accept the oil. This is also how I clean all my brushed motors. Its made a huge difference for me. Be Blessed...

Brushless (even "mild" ones) are a better bet if you do lots of running. But I guessed that most folk would just bolt in a Tamiya hop-up brushed and be done with it. Yeah, the weather wasn't playing ball, we nearly got blown away and it was affecting the car on the straight. That's the trouble with our hobby at this time of year! Oh, you've probably noticed that I've gone all modern recently, even using a steering wheel radio in this one! A gyro would be an advantage for sure. Hiya matey!
Highly entertaining and informative video guys!
Very interesting topic.... As I'm old school we generally stick with brushed motors, in our runners we use a combination of sports tuned, torque tuned, super stock and the good old technigold!
From multiple experiments, I've found the type of motor is very 'car specific'..... Sport tuned/torque tuned are great in the CWO1, but totally dead in the ORV chassis.
Technigold works great in the ORV (and, probably one of the smoothest sounding, punchy brushed motors ever produced) unyet, in a CWO1 its performance is not great.
Finding technigold brushes now is getting very hard/expensive, but the 23 turn superstock series is the 'modern technigold' in my eyes... think its putting out around 26000 rpm and really adds a punch to any tamiya chassis, and is just on the limits of what a tble02 esc can handle! Also, is rebuildable.... which works out cheaper long term if you run your cars a lot.
We have always found the sports tuned and torque tuned to perform very similar.... Good value, but like I say, they are disposable, as brushes and bearings etc can't be added/replaced.
Have dabbled with the tamiya brushless sensored motors, but was very underwhelmed.... Found the superstock brushed far more compatible with the vintage models.
    Great fun experimenting though!
Must commend you and Rob on achieving 7th place in the CWO1 speed challenge with your luncharrari..... not the fastest, but by far the most entertaining if you ask me!! 👌😂 🤣

Yes your correct. The Super stock motors all 3 from BZ to TZ to RZ are all really great motors from Tamiya and perform excellently 👌💪 I am extremely happy with my 2 Hot Shot S. One is a Hot Shot and the other is a Super Hot Shot and both fitted with full bearings and each a Super stock RZ motor and I fitted Louise phantom tyres on rear to my Super Hot Shot and Schumacher mezzo on front . That car is running a 2 S lipo and a 13 tooth pinion to take advantage of this motors power band because this motor has a speed of 27500 RPM. And I get 44-45 kmh consistantly.thats 27 mph. Very happy and it wheel stands to. I wonder with higher gearing what I could achieve. Incidentally that's faster than my Kyosho Fazer Chevy Camaro Z28 with brushed G14 motor, the kyosho Fazer only gets to 42 kmh and fair enough is quite a lot heavier than the Tamiya Super Hot Shot but it amazing isn't it . An old Tamiya vintage buggy even though it's a 40 year old design I only purchased it new from shop in 2022 , is faster than a Kyosho Fazer with a 14 turn motor. Both cars use lipo 2s batteries also.💪👍 Love you video guys.

      Great comment sir!
Glad to hear of others appreciating the advantages of the superb superstock series of Tamiya motors!
For their specifications, they really excel way beyond what you would expect from a 23 turn motor!
That's some great speed for the trusty hot shots there fella.... don't underestimate the cars capabilities just because it's an old design!
As I said in my original comment, these superstocks are perfect for bringing most vintage Tamiyas to life, especially with 2s..... and they also match up with the TBLE-0 series of ESC's very nicely.
I'm running a BZ in my monster beetle, a TZ in my TRF custom Top Force, an RZ in my Kyosho Optima Turbo, an RZ in my RC10 B6.2 ,and a TZ in my Egress..... and am very happy with all of them!
I also love my Fazer mk2 (general lee) with it's very nippy 14 turn brushed motor, I've clocked 25 mph on a 70c 2s in that..... but the build quality of those motors ain't a patch on the superstocks, and I've also had issues with the stock hobbywing 1060 that it comes with going into limp mode!
But all in all, I don't see myself going over to brushless any time soon!
Keep flying the flag for the brushed vintage crew bud! 🤜 ✌️

Another great video Mark and Rob 👍 I've got an XV01, and a TT02 and TT01E both rally spec. I've got a sport tuned in the XV and torque tuned in the TTs. The performance seems so close to me the torque tuned is a total bargain. You could see in your vid the car came alive with the torque and the sport motors fitted. Plus I think this level of performance is perfect for a realistic looking rally drive experience.

is this test done on 1 single battery or did every motor had it's own battery, btw i have the torque tuned, sport tuned and the cup macchine because we use the cup macchine for the Top Stock class @ the Tamiya cup here in the Netherlands and we hate the motor, with the cup machine good tuned car you can do 30 mph but every engine is different (between the 27 and 33 MPH).
best for racing is both torque and sport tuned, short tracks use the torque tuned and long tracks with lots of high speed use the sport tuned and like you say, ditch the cup machine.

@@MarkBryanRC within the cup machine there is so much difference that it is not funny anymore to use as a racing engine, as a racing engine on the same platform the Torque Tuned is way better and lives longer than the cup machine, at the moment i am trying to kill a torque for almost 5 years still has it torque and top speed as it was brand new.

Tamiya got the claimed data for their motors all wrong. For example the sport tuned motors (black can) can no way be 350 g-cm, in my TXT-1 with stock gear ratio they lacking the uphill/climbing power compared to the stock 540-J and the run time is nearly half as short. The 540-J is more like 320 g-cm (not the claimed 255) and the black can sport tuned more like 250-260 instead of 350... lets hope the new silver can sport tuned ones has more torque

Yeah the Torque Tuned is a bargain and even better when it comes in the kit! The Type S is a real bargain, if you add up the price of the included hop-ups it'd be worth about £250+!!!! I only spent about 200 on my complete Type S with radio, servo and battery! But yeah, RTR works out better value but then it's not a Tamiya!
