      Tom Jerry just needs a couple of changes. an aluminum lock bar, steel pivot, steel stop pin, no serrations, and some work done on the jimping area.
      The plastic makes it light but some areas plastic is just the wrong material

      Nah. CRK is desirable because of the titanium frame lock and small tolerances. Mass production goes against every reason people buy sebenzas.
      CRKT knives are good value, but they ruin designers' best knives.

    That's a quirky bit of history Nick. I do love Chris' reaction to this knife, and the salespeople's disclaimer sheet was a hoot! I read every caveat and laughed :) EDIT: However, this is the sort of knife I'd like to have just as a collector's piece (with the salesmen's sheet of course).

    Very interesting and you covered it well. Most interesting to me is how and why CRKT made these. They either had a tentative OK from somebody at CRK or they just assumed they would get it. They had to spend some money designing that frame and figuring out how to integrate the metal into lockbar. They made a significant investment. That wouldn't be done without a belief that it could be manufactured. The letter to salespeople is also a sign that the company was sure this was going to be a product.
    The business person in me wants the back-story on what decisions or assumptions were made when. This was great, Nick.

    As a Chinese knife aficionado I've seen my share of plastic frames and Plasticine screws.
    BTW - could it be that CRKT invented the hardened lock insert during the design of this model (which was probably done under the influence of some strong drugs)?

    Very interesting. It shows the metal sebenza in a more realistic perspective as a crude, simple tool.
    I am reminded of all the gun-weenie whining about the early plastic Glock, which is a now spectacular success in professional use around the world. Even without a metal insert for the lockbar, this would be sufficient for the actual use of most knife-weenies opening their boxes and coffee bags.
    I am looking for a knife to take on vacation to a former eastern-bloc commie country, where it is liable to be stolen or confiscated. A $20 plastic framelock with sebenza styling would do fine.
    Thanks, Nick!

    I like reviews like this that are rich in production knife history. Someone should lend Nick one of the original 1981 Spyderco C01 Workers with the two screw clip (screws close together) to review and talk about. 1200 were made and you could have picked one of them up at the Texas State Fair in Dallas in 1981. It was the first pocket knife to have a pocket clip and was revolutionary for one handed opening folders.
    I saw one on ebay a few months ago that was listed pretty cheap and was only $158 at the time (the seller didn't know what they had, they thought it was from the evolution series in the 1990s). I would have bought it if it didn't sell for the more accurate price of $620.

  • @Montblanc1986
    @Montblanc1986 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They should have made it. The Sebenza is an evolution of how exact and perfect a knife can be. This could have been perfection designed to price point but refined over the years. The lock bar etc are all a great design. Chris was probably scared it would get as good as the real thing.

    I wondered if you, Nick, had any interest in adding a subtitle track to one of your videos if I gave you the .srt file. Specifically this one. I figured I wanted to do a project and figured I might as well make one for one of my favorite content creators. Maybe we even help a deaf knife enthusiast. But that being said, I do know adding the srt file will take some extra time and is not really beneficial for you or the channel, so don’t feel obligated. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your night and let me know if you have any interest! Thanks for all the free content.

    I love liner locks but my first frame lock broke the lock off. So I’ve always been very leery of them. It surprises me expensive knives have frame lock. I’m not referring to this rare knife , just in general. I think the knife I had was a crkt can’t remember. Has that been your experience?

    Very interesting bit of knife lore Nick,a strange bit hybrid Frankenstein plastic sebenza. The sweep of the blade on my sebenza 21 has that certain form which I personally like. A poor mans sebenza, I had to save for mine, I think I might have had one if they had survived, just for the blade shape alone. Really good content Nick for your knife nut followers. By the way, I understand about your watch thing a wee bit, got a buddy that loves watches, got me thinking about a nice bit of engineering on my wrist, A Timex expedition for edc and a nice Citizens for Sunday me.

    While I do find this hilarious, I would like to see another company try to make a budget sebenza. I feel like it would be an eye opener for those people who, like me, thought they were way too plain of a knife to be worth the $400 they cost. I own one now and I get it, but I feel like if people were able to handle them without taking a $400 leap of faith more people would be buying them

    • @neokuji
      @neokuji 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tyler Woolstenhulme seems like a lot of companies Ti slab folders are an attempt to make a more affordable Sebenza-esque design/knife. Some better than others at it.

    • @ryanhewitt8427
      @ryanhewitt8427 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't see CRK ever doing that for fear that it would canabilize sales of the current Sebenza. This is a huge concern for many companies in a variety of industries. For example Rolex removed their distribution of Tudor watches in the North American market for a number of years because the brand was effecting the sale of Rolex which is their main focus. They have recently returned to the U.S. with a different (and extremely successful) marketing strategy. They have been able to gain a new segment of the market taking market share from less expensive companies like Tag Heur. It would be very interesting to see how they would differentiate the 2 in order to not hurt the main focus of their company.

    • @tylerwoolstenhulme6756
      @tylerwoolstenhulme6756 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a fair point. I'd still like to see it happen though.

    • @StrongZeroPowerHour
      @StrongZeroPowerHour 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always understood that the Sebenza is fantastic less for the design and more for the build quality and the grade of the materials/craftsmanship that goes into it. Is that correct..? I've never handled one

    • @tylerwoolstenhulme6756
      @tylerwoolstenhulme6756 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that's fair to say. After around the $250 mark you're not paying for the materials as much as you're paying for the build quality and consistency. Yeah, you can pay ~$375 for a plain Sebenza but you can get the same handle material and blade steel on a ZT0450 for ~$160. But what makes it worth that much more is the consistency and precision with which it was made.

    A super nerdy knife theory question: If a framelock is friction dependent, shouldn't more of the lockbar interfacing with blade be a good thing? Because more of the surface areas of the lockbar and blade would be touching, causing more friction.

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The question is time: The framelock will wear. By having a closer-to-middle engagement, more wear can occur before the lockbar is no longer snug.

    • @ogenmatic
      @ogenmatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rodrigo Teresa
      A lot of quality framelocks have a stainless insert attached to the titanium frame & it's usually relatively thin. The spring built into the frame (and your hand wrapped around it in use) is what prevents the knife from unlocking - much more so than friction. If you had lots of contact area (= friction), you'd get lock-stick.
      (If I got that wrong please correct me)

      Rodrigo Teresa The lock bar cut out, or lack thereof, also makes a big difference. Most of a liner/frame lock's strength and usability comes from those two spots. It can be a super thick slab of titanium, etc., but if the cut out is too thin or the engagement doesn't allow for any wear, it's not going to work well. And, as a side note, as far as I'm aware most of a frame lock's strength depends upon the lock bar cut out, assuming reasonable hardness and placement. So if it gets as thin as a liner lock at the base of the lock bar, it may not be a whole lot stronger. Of course, your grip is helping to hold a frame lock in place. That is my understanding, anyway.

    Sebenza thumb is absolutely a real thing, I cut the tip of my left thumb off and it's like all scar tissue but it's still not nearly as gnarly and calloused as my right thumb from opening the sebenzas

    It’s literally the knife version of the glock 19. They made the parts that don’t need to be metal into plastic and left the parts that need to be metal in order to save money and weight (I’m assuming).

    I still think CRK should sell out a TAD and make a budget model. I own the real Sebenza, but I also own a couple of the SRM LAND knives which are decidedly CRK-ian and part of me would like a mid-range Sebenza to thrash... I mean, I thrash my real one, but still, I didn't enjoy paying 400 bucks for it. Maybe a licensed Kizer version? Steel lockbar insert, overtravel stop, maybe some bearings. ~175ish? I dunno. I'd buy it.

    Wouldn't be a bad little budget knife if they put a metal lockbar insert in it or a thin piece of steel to slip over the lockbar where it locks in place

    The original steel lockbar insert?

    • @diggumsmack2
      @diggumsmack2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, because the steel doesn't extend to the end of the lock bar. It's spring steel with plastic molded around it, but is entirely inside the lock bar except where Nick showed it.

    Why would a plastic frame lock be unsafe? Just use the knife the right way and you won't have problems. At least that's what some youtuber said yesterday. He was complaining about people who like tri-ad locks but his argument should hold up here, use a knife right and it shouldn't matter if it's a tri-ad or a plastic frame lock.

    I think/hope Nick was joking with the review style of it. Because it is a prototype an early looking one to my mind. So the knife handle was probably going to be made out of another material.

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kurauk No, this was going to be a polymer framelock.

    • @kurauk
      @kurauk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My brain will not allow me to believe this. Not saying you are wrong. But my brain is screaming plastic prototype to give a rough feel of the product before it gets a decent handle. I cannot overide that notion at all. It just seems stupid and I'm guessing Chris Reeve thought so to.

  • @SolosKnifeReviews
    @SolosKnifeReviews 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Many of these "prototypes" are indeed fakes of the real prototype. These could be had 5-8 years ago for $25-$50 on eBay all day long. But again, could be the same factory who did the "real" prototypes and they just kept making them due to the "collectibility" of them. Really weird knife, fun to see one but many are out in wild.

    • @diggumsmack2
      @diggumsmack2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the mid 1990's there were thousands of knife salesman, ie. that's a lot of salesman's prototypes. As the age of knife buying on the internet wasn't a thing yet or only in it's very infancy. So seeing alot on ebay before anybody knew the story makes sense.
